Background to the Animal Care Program
Portugal is home to a large network of animal welfare organisations working to address challenges such as stray animal populations, abandonment, responsible pet ownership, and access to veterinary care. While animal welfare standards continue to improve across the country, many charities and community organisations rely heavily on volunteers and donations to support their work.
Animal welfare issues can vary between communities, with some organisations focusing on stray cats through Trap Neuter Return initiatives, while others may support rescue, rehabilitation, adoption programs, community outreach, or educational campaigns promoting responsible ownership. These organisations play an important role in improving animal welfare while helping to reduce the long-term challenges associated with uncontrolled stray populations.
The organisations themselves are professionally managed and supported by dedicated local staff and volunteers who oversee all aspects of animal care and welfare. The volunteer role is not to replace trained professionals or veterinary staff. Instead, volunteers provide additional support that allows organisations to expand their reach, maintain daily operations, and improve the quality of care and attention provided to animals.
Whether supporting welfare initiatives, assisting with animal care tasks, helping with community outreach, or contributing to population management programs, volunteers play an important role in supporting local efforts. Through volunteer work in Portugal, participants contribute to sustainable animal welfare projects while gaining a greater understanding of responsible animal care and community-based conservation initiatives.
Animal Care Volunteer Placement Example
Porto Community Cat Welfare Project – One example of an animal care volunteer in Portugal placement involves supporting a local organisation focused on community cat welfare through Trap Neuter Return initiatives. The project works with local volunteers, veterinary clinics, and community members to manage stray cat populations responsibly and humanely.
The project focuses on identifying cat colonies, safely trapping cats for sterilisation, supporting veterinary treatment where required, and returning healthy animals to their original territory following recovery. Alongside population management, the organisation also promotes responsible ownership, community education, and adoption opportunities where appropriate.
The project is largely coordinated by local volunteers and animal welfare advocates who are passionate about improving the lives of stray animals. Volunteers support the organisation's activities while gaining insight into practical animal welfare initiatives operating within the local community.
Your Volunteer Role & Typical Work Day
As an animal care volunteer in Portugal, your role will vary depending on the project and current priorities. Volunteers can expect to support local teams with a range of animal welfare activities, community initiatives, and operational tasks. For example:
• Assisting with community animal welfare initiatives
• Supporting Trap Neuter Return activities where appropriate
• Helping prepare equipment and supplies for animal welfare work
• Assisting with feeding, cleaning, and maintaining animal care areas
• Supporting adoption and awareness campaigns
• Helping organise donations and project resources
• Participating in community outreach activities
• Supporting local volunteers with daily operations
Some placements may involve direct interaction with animals, while others focus more on supporting the wider welfare initiatives that make these projects possible. Volunteers should be comfortable working as part of a team and contributing wherever support is most needed.

Your work schedule as a volunteer in Portugal will be coordinated between you, the local team, and your project placement. Most volunteers dedicate approximately 3 to 4 hours per day to their project, Monday to Friday, although exact timings are confirmed during your orientation and may vary depending on the project’s needs and staffing requirements at the time. As a result, volunteer shifts may take place in the morning, afternoon, or occasionally the evening. Most placements are located within Porto and can typically be reached by a short walk and a metro journey from the accommodation.
On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to your project, introduce you to the staff, and ensure you are comfortable navigating the route independently for the remainder of your placement.
Other Things to Consider Working With Animals in Portugal
Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you're in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Alternatively, ridesharing apps are a common and cost-effective option. Volunteers may also choose to use Porto's metro network, particularly if they already have a metro ticket or travel pass during their stay. The metro provides a convenient and cost-effective way to travel directly from the city centre to Porto Airport, making it a popular option. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination.
Language & Communication - Portuguese is the primary language spoken by participants and many program staff. While staff members generally have some English ability, communication may sometimes rely on simple language, demonstrations, gestures, and translation apps. No Portuguese language experience is required, but learning a few basic phrases can help you settle in more quickly and build stronger connections with participants and staff.
Project Activities & Animal Welfare Priorities - One of the most important things to understand is that animal welfare projects often operate according to the immediate needs of the animals and the organisation. As a result, daily activities can vary significantly throughout the year and may change at short notice. Factors such as animal welfare priorities, veterinary schedules, weather conditions, community reports, and volunteer availability can all influence the work taking place on any given day.
Understanding Your Impact - One of the most common questions volunteers ask is how they can contribute when many organisations are already supported by experienced local volunteers and animal welfare professionals. The answer is that Portugal volunteer programs, such as this, are designed to enhance existing services rather than replace local expertise. Local teams oversee all welfare decisions, veterinary care, and project management, while volunteers provide additional time, support, and resources that help organisations achieve more than they could alone. The greatest impact often comes through supporting daily operations, community initiatives, and animal welfare activities that might otherwise be difficult to maintain consistently.
Animal Handling Expectations - Not all placements involve direct hands-on interaction with animals every day. Depending on the project, volunteers may spend time supporting operational tasks, preparing equipment, assisting with administration, helping local volunteers, or participating in community welfare initiatives. In some projects, direct handling of animals may be restricted to trained staff, veterinary professionals, or experienced local volunteers for safety and welfare reasons.
Flexibility & Initiative - Activities can vary throughout the year depending on animal welfare priorities, veterinary availability, community reports, seasonal needs, and project requirements. Volunteers should arrive with an open mind and be prepared to adapt to different activities and responsibilities. Those who show initiative, enthusiasm, and a willingness to support wherever needed often gain the most from their placement and make the strongest contribution to the project.
Project Environment - Animal welfare organisations in Portugal often operate with limited resources and depend heavily on donations, fundraising efforts, and volunteer support. While projects are professionally managed, volunteers should not expect large-scale animal shelters or highly commercial facilities. Instead, many projects focus on practical community-based solutions that create long-term improvements in animal welfare. For those looking to volunteer with animals in Portugal, this placement provides a realistic and rewarding opportunity to support local welfare initiatives while gaining valuable insight into responsible animal care practices.
Community-Based Welfare Projects - Volunteer placements focus on supporting responsible and sustainable animal welfare initiatives within local communities. Rather than operating as traditional animal attractions, these projects prioritise animal welfare, population management, rehabilitation, responsible ownership, and community engagement. This approach helps create lasting benefits for both animals and the communities in which they live.

While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Portugal will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a Portugal animal care volunteer, you must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the wildlife projects — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!
Volunteering overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.
If you have any concerns or queries regarding your eligibility or suitability for the Portugal animal care program, we recommend that you contact us before committing to the program. Our team is always happy to assist you in making an informed decision and ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all involved.
For your volunteer trip to Portugal, you should book your flights to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport – Porto (airport code OPO) to arrive on the designated Sunday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Portugal animal care volunteer.
Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Saturday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.
Whether you’re just arriving or bidding farewell to Portugal, our team is here to ensure your transition is as seamless and stress-free as possible. You can apply anytime for most of our programs, including the Portugal animal care volunteer program. However, we highly recommend applying soon to secure your spot. Some of our programs have limited capacity, and spaces can fill quickly, especially during our peak travel period from June to August. If you plan to join us during this time, applying early is even more important to avoid disappointment!
When you embark on this experience, you must be 100% committed to joining the program. To apply, locate the “Apply Now” button on the individual project page. This will guide you step-by-step through our online Application Process. We’ve made it as straightforward and user-friendly as possible so that you can easily secure your place.
Based on feedback from previous Portugal animal care volunteers, we’ve found that 3-4 weeks is the ideal amount of time to fully immerse yourself in the experience of volunteering in Portugal. This duration provides ample opportunity to integrate into the local community, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to your chosen project. Over this time, you’ll be able to make a lasting positive impact while having plenty of time to explore Portugal’s incredible sights and culture during your weekends.
Many of our Portugal animal care volunteers who joined us for just 2 weeks often expressed that their time was too short. They leave wishing they had stayed longer to further engage with the projects they’ve grown passionate about. If your schedule allows, we highly encourage you to consider a longer stay to make the most of this life-changing experience!
While our programs are available for longer durations, volunteers can initially sign up for a maximum of 12 weeks in each destination. In the past, we’ve found that some volunteers commit to extended placements but later wish to adjust their plans for independent travel or to join another program. Please note, however, that Program Fees are non-refundable once committed. If you arrive and find yourself loving the program (as many do!), you are more than welcome to extend your placement. Extensions are subject to availability at the time of your request, but our team will do their best to accommodate your desire to stay longer and continue making an impact.
For those considering an even more adventurous journey, we recommend exploring our Encounter Programs. These unique opportunities allow you to experience 2-4 week stays across 3-10 destinations, offering a perfect balance of travel, cultural immersion, and volunteering.
At PMGY, we understand the importance of safety, especially for first-time travellers, and we work diligently to ensure that all our programs, including those in Portugal, provide a secure and enriching experience. Our programs are carefully designed to balance structure and independence perfectly. This means you’ll enjoy a guided and supportive environment while free to explore and immerse yourself in local culture. For further details, please refer to our Safety & Wellbeing page.
Volunteer safety in each destination is a top priority and is monitored regularly. A member of our International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program to ensure it meets our high standards. We also stay current with advice published by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Through constant communication with our local teams, we ensure that our volunteers are always placed in secure and stable regions.
Our International Team has personally visited and participated in every program we offer, paying close attention to every detail—from the living conditions and local neighbourhoods to the food you’ll enjoy. These meticulous checks ensure that all aspects of your stay meet our rigorous standards. Additionally, our local teams are experienced professionals with years of experience hosting international volunteers. They serve as PMGY’s trusted representatives, offering 24/7 support to all volunteers throughout their stay. To further enhance your safety, PMGY provides a 24-hour international emergency line accessible at all times. In-country staff also maintain connections with local medical professionals, ensuring that immediate assistance is available should it be required during your placement as a Portugal animal care volunteer.
Before you embark on your journey, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, which covers key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have additional or specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. Furthermore, on a monthly basis, PMGY hosts an Introductory Webinar and a Safety Webinar. These interactive sessions offer invaluable information about our projects and practical tips for staying safe abroad.
When you arrive in-country, you’ll participate in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover the general volunteer program and your specific project, including essential safety advice tailored to your destination. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card — a step we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. Additionally, you’ll receive a comprehensive list of essential contact numbers to keep on hand during your stay.
While no travel experience can ever be guaranteed 100% trouble-free, PMGY has taken every precaution to ensure that your time as a Portugal animal care volunteer is as safe and enjoyable as possible. We strongly suggest following the local team’s guidance and advice to ensure your safety throughout your journey.
