The project welcomes up to 55 children aged 4 to 6 who bring plenty of enthusiasm to their daily learning.

Out of all our childcare placements, this one is the most structured. If you are torn between teaching and childcare, this is the ideal place for you. The children are still very young but are eager to learn. They love picking up the basics of English through songs and play, and they truly value the presence of our volunteers.

Mutiara Ibu Daycare – Founded by a local Balinese couple, Mutiara Ibu Daycare offers affordable childcare, accommodating up to 40 children each day. In the mornings, volunteers play an important role in introducing structure through fun activities and games. The children’s ages can vary, so it’s a great opportunity for volunteers to get creative when teaching English, especially for the older children, helping them prepare for school.

In the afternoons, your work as a volunteer in Bali may involve spending time with children ranging from 6 months to 13 years old. You’ll often assist during mealtimes, encouraging picky eaters and helping clean up after the messier ones! Volunteers also lend a hand during bath times, but assistance is needed across all areas of the centre. As a childcare volunteer in Bali, you may also be asked to engage with the older children or help staff with daily chores.

Immaculatta Daycare – Located just 10 minutes from the Volunteer House, Immaculatta Daycare was founded by a Christian Church to support working families by providing childcare and basic English lessons for older children. As a volunteer, you will help keep the children entertained by leading exciting games and activities. While the staff handles the children’s basic needs, you’ll be the one to bring fun and energy to the centre! The morning session lasts around 3 hours, after which the children have a nap, and you can prepare for the next group of volunteers in the afternoon.

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Childcare day

As a childcare volunteer in Bali, your main role is to share your time, enthusiasm, and skills to encourage and care for the children. By introducing them to English, you’ll be giving them an early opportunity for social interaction and educational growth.

Your volunteer abroad program runs from Monday to Thursday, with Friday being optional but encouraged. Morning sessions typically run from 8am to 12pm, and afternoon sessions from 1pm to 4pm. Transportation to the project is provided via bemo, which usually takes no more than 20 minutes.

Hope Daycare – Our primary program in Cambodia is based in Takeo Province, south of Phnom Penh, the country’s capital. The children participating in the childcare program come from nearby villages. The daycare centre is located on the same campus as our team’s teaching English program for older children and teenagers. The aim is for the younger children to eventually transition into these programmes as they grow, making integration smoother.

Established in 2018, the daycare program operates in a classroom environment and welcomes up to 50 children aged 4 to 7 each day. Many children travel as far as 7km daily to attend, eager to learn, socialise, and enhance their early education.

This rewarding volunteer project focuses on building core English skills, encouraging social interactions, and establishing routines from a young age. As a childcare volunteer in Cambodia, you’ll also organise fun games and playtime activities during breaks outside the classroom. Children take part in a structured daily routine that combines educational activities, creative play, and outdoor recreation, providing a safe, nurturing environment where they can learn, build confidence, and develop important social skills. The project is easily reached by public bus, taxi, or Uber from the volunteer accommodation.

You will play an active role in supporting the children throughout their day. This may include assisting with educational activities, helping to organise arts and crafts, reading stories, supervising games, and encouraging learning through creative play. You will also help create a warm, welcoming environment by supporting meal times, keeping activity areas organised, and providing positive encouragement to the children. Today, approximately 57% of South Africa’s population lives in poverty. In low-income township areas, living conditions are harsh, characterised by high crime and unemployment rates, health issues, and overcrowding. A lack of childcare facilities leaves many children without proper care and protection.

Affordable and accessible childcare services are especially scarce across Cape Town and surrounding communities. Families from low-income backgrounds face the greatest struggles. While some centres have been established to address these issues, many are understaffed and lack adequate resources. This makes the contributions of PMGY volunteers invaluable to improving the quality of care provided to these children.

The daycare centres PMGY supports include independent local initiatives and government-subsidised community support programs. Some are home-based crèches run by local women, while others are more structured organisations. These children come from low or no-income families and are referred by the divisional secretary office as families requiring financial support.

This project is fully funded by the Program Fee and provides free early childhood education and exposure to English for these children, opportunities they might not otherwise have. The children also receive essential items such as stationery, bags, shoes, and uniforms. Happy Hearts is led by a main teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience.

The project supports children from five local villages and is still developing, which is where your role as a childcare volunteer in Sri Lanka becomes invaluable. By assisting the teacher in structuring the day and caring for the children, you’ll play a crucial role in the growth and success of this program.

Urban Council Preschools – Every childcare volunteer in Sri Lanka has the chance to support a network of preschools in Ambalangoda. PMGY works with up to eight preschools in the local community, each with a different background. Some preschools are free for children to attend, while others charge small administrative fees. However, the children attending these schools typically come from low-income families and challenging circumstances.

Your role will involve providing much-needed support to the local community and working parents, many of whom are employed in local cinnamon or garment factories. These preschools offer a safe space for children aged 3-4 years old to enjoy early education and development while their parents work to support their families.

Sunrise & Star Rise Daycare – These daycares are situated just a short walk from the Volunteer House and are run by the same dedicated Head Teacher. Around 20-40 children attend each school daily for care and education. The daycares employ 2-3 teachers in each school so the assistance of volunteers is highly appreciated.

Tristan Day Centre – Situated in the Mbauda district of the Arusha region, Tristan Day Centre is about 15 minutes from both Arusha city and the Volunteer House. The daycare accommodates preschool children aged 2–6 years. Around 30 children attend nursery classes from Monday to Friday and return home in the afternoons. The centre employs 8 local staff, including 2 nursery teachers and 3 cooking/cleaning staff. Volunteers on our abroad volunteer programs work alongside local staff, ensuring these children receive the attention and care they deserve.

Star Daycare – Founded in 2020, Star Daycare was established to support the local community, which faced significant challenges affording childcare following the pandemic. Located in Sombetini, about 15 minutes from the Volunteer House, the centre hosts children aged 1–6, offering nursery and preschool education. As a newer centre, the extra support provided by volunteers is invaluable in helping the centre operate smoothly and expanding its services to the community.

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Childcare Day

As a volunteer with children in Tanzania, your role involves supporting and interacting with the children throughout the day, helping with their care and development. You’ll also be responsible for preparing activities to keep them engaged. While each project varies, typical working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am–1pm, with the option to extend until 3pm if requested.

Each day on this program begins with basic English lessons. During this time, volunteers are expected to lead fun and educational activities that teach the fundamentals of the language. The rest of the day is spent entertaining and caring for the children, often involving outdoor play in the garden. The centres have various toys and learning tools to support the children’s development during your childcare volunteer abroad project.

During mealtimes, you’ll help serve food and ensure the children are eating well. After lunch, naptime is scheduled to give the children much-needed rest and nutrition for healthy growth. While the children rest, you’ll assist staff with tasks such as gardening, food preparation, or general upkeep of the centre.

The centres PMGY supports are often understaffed and overcrowded, making your contribution invaluable. Friendship Village – Friendship Village is a living, health, and educational centre supporting children and adults affected by Agent Orange, as well as providing healthcare to war veterans. Founded in 1992 by American veteran George Mizo, the centre aims to repair the damage caused by Agent Orange during the America-Vietnam War. The complex includes two living quarters, two classroom buildings, a health centre, and a vegetable garden where much of the food is grown on-site.

The centre is home to 120 residents aged 4-40, hailing from across Vietnam. Residents face a range of disabilities, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, physical deformities, and severe mental disabilities. Volunteers contribute by collaborating with teaching staff to develop ideas and techniques, structuring lessons, evaluating students, and updating profiles. Volunteers may also teach English to staff, teachers, and residents.

Khanh Tam Day Care Centre – Established in 2006, this centre provides early detection and care for mentally impaired children, supporting around 80-90 children aged 1-12. The centre features four key programs:

Early Intervention: For children aged 2-5, this program focuses on basic skills like communication and social interaction to help integrate them into society.

Primary/Elementary Program: For children aged 6-12, focusing on reading, writing, and basic maths.

School Function Program: For children aged 6-12 who cannot study a standard curriculum.

Living Skills Program: For individuals aged 10-16 to develop essential life skills for the future.

Volunteers begin in an observational role to understand the project and the children’s abilities. Gradually, they take on a more hands-on role, assisting with and running class activities. Volunteers are encouraged to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the centre. Note: This project requires a minimum commitment of 4 weeks.

Morning Star Centre (Sao Mai) – Founded in 1995, Morning Star is a subsidiary of the Vietnam Relief Association for Children with Disabilities. The centre employs 70 staff to care for approximately 150 children aged 1-25, providing education and training to help them integrate into the community. Children here often have developmental disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy.

Classes are tailored to the children’s needs, with small groups of around 12-13 children and 2-3 teachers per class. Volunteers assist with basic education, motor skill development, play therapy, and physical education.

The centre also offers vocational and pre-vocational courses for teenagers, preparing them for future opportunities. Students gain work experience through initiatives like the centre’s coffee shop and cooking lessons, helping build confidence and independence. Volunteers with relevant experience may observe one-on-one therapy sessions to provide guidance to staff.

Chich Bong Kindergarten – Chich Bong Kindergarten supports children aged 12 months to 6 years by developing their abilities through arts, languages, and various communication methods. It also runs clubs to nurture children’s hobbies and talents.

Classes typically have 15-20 children. Volunteers help improve the children’s English through songs, dance, and fun educational activities. Creative activities like drawing, painting, and handicrafts are encouraged to boost the children’s confidence and communication skills. A local teacher is present to support volunteers as needed.

Rose Kindergarten – Located in Hanoi’s Bac Tu Liem district, this kindergarten supports children aged 2-6 with early years development. Volunteers assist with art, dance, sports, and music classes, as well as basic reading and writing activities for older children. This helps the children become more confident in their English communication skills.

Classes are split into groups, such as a larger class for 2-3-year-olds and a smaller group for older children. Volunteers may assist with feeding, organising games, and leading arts and crafts activities. Local teachers (two per class) are available to help manage the classroom, and a translator is on-site to bridge any language barriers. Volunteers also have the chance to support extracurricular activities, fostering better relationships with the children and staff.

PMGY Zanzibar supports a number of daycare centres in Paje, where the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children and their communities.

Childcare Volunteer Placement Examples

Space Day Care – Situated in the Paje district of Zanzibar, Space Day Care is located just a 15-minute walk from the volunteer house and provides a safe space for play and early education for young children in the community. The daycare caters to preschool children aged 2–6 years, with around 30 children attending nursery classes from Monday to Friday before returning home in the afternoons.

The centre employs four local staff members, including two nursery teachers and two cooking and cleaning staff. Volunteers on our overseas programs work alongside the local team to deliver meaningful activities and help ease the workload of staff who work tirelessly to ensure every child is well cared for each day.

Sunrise Kindergarten – Located just behind the main coastal road in Paje, Sunrise Kindergarten offers young children a strong foundation for their mainstream education. Many children in Zanzibar begin school later than recommended due to financial constraints, meaning they often fall behind when they enter formal education.

Sunrise Kindergarten supports children from the local community by providing a safe, affordable space to start their education and gain a head start. Volunteers play a key role by introducing English at an early age – an invaluable skill in Zanzibar, where tourism is becoming the primary source of income.

Zanzibar Daycare Centre – Founded in 2018, Zanzibar Daycare Centre was established to support young families with childcare needs, enabling parents to seek employment in the tourism industry. Located in Jambiani, approximately a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from the volunteer house, the centre cares for children aged 6 months to 4 years, offering both nursery and preschool education.

Jambiani is a quieter, more local area compared to Paje, which can make access to basic services such as schools, transport, and stable employment more challenging. Volunteers help expand the permanent staff team, allowing the centre to accommodate more children throughout the day.

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Childcare Day

As a volunteer with children in Zanzibar, your role involves supporting and interacting with the children throughout the day, helping with their care and development. You’ll also be responsible for preparing activities to keep them engaged. While each project varies, typical working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am–1pm, with the option to extend until 3pm if requested.

Each day on this program begins with basic English lessons. During this time, volunteers are expected to lead fun and educational activities that teach the fundamentals of the language. The rest of the day is spent entertaining and caring for the children, often involving outdoor play in the garden. The centres have various toys and learning tools to support the children’s development during your childcare volunteer abroad project.

During mealtimes, you’ll help serve food and ensure the children are eating well. After lunch, naptime is scheduled to give the children much-needed rest and nutrition for healthy growth. While the children rest, you’ll assist staff with tasks such as gardening, food preparation, or general upkeep of the centre.

The centres PMGY supports are often understaffed and overcrowded, making your contribution invaluable. Your responsibilities will include teaching basic English, assisting with meals, organising games and activities, and spending quality time with the children. Most volunteers focus on leading English lessons and classroom activities, but your role will also involve general caregiving.

In the afternoons, you’ll have free time to plan future sessions, relax at the Volunteer House, or explore the tranquil beaches of Paje and Jambiani.

Transport to your project is not included in the Program Fee. Some childcare centres are within walking distance of the Volunteer House, while others may require a commute. For these projects, you’ll need to take a tuk-tuk, with travel times of up to 20 minutes for your volunteer work in Zanzibar. During your orientation, the local team will guide you through the transport system and provide advice on costs. If you’re ever unsure about fares, they’ll be happy to assist.

Travel Insurance

Importantly, having an appropriate travel insurance policy during your time abroad is essential. Therefore, it is mandatory for all of our international volunteers to be appropriately covered across all of their trip dates. This includes your travel to and from the host country, as well as any onward travel. Although PMGY does everything to ensure your trip is safe, inevitably things can go wrong. Therefore, having a travel insurance policy in place helps you effectively deal with any problems you may encounter during your time away.

We have partnered up with Howden Insurance to create an affordable and comprehensive optional policy. This has been designed with our international volunteers in mind, to cover our participants for all of their travel essentials. The policy is available to anyone across the globe, up to the age of 65 years. The document will cover you for your time on any PMGY destination. You can purchase PMGY Travel Insurance during your online application or you can contact us directly to arrange it.

🇮🇩 Tabanan – Our Bali volunteer program is based in Tabanan, approximately 1.5 hours from Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) International Airport. Tabanan is the capital town of Bali’s ‘rice bowl’ regency, known for its stunning green landscapes and rolling hills. The regency spans Central and Western Bali and is home to Mount Batukaru, Bali’s second-highest peak at 2,276 metres. Tabanan town itself is a commercial hub, offering essential amenities such as banks, hospitals, and shops, but it has a distinctly local feel, untouched by tourist crowds.

🇰🇭 Bakod Village – Our Cambodia volunteer program is located in the picturesque rural village of Bakod, just two hours from Phnom Penh Airport. This traditional village, nestled in Takeo province, provides an authentic and peaceful experience, far from busy tourist trails. However, volunteers can still access popular backpacker destinations on weekends. Bakod is situated 7km from Takeo’s centre and borders provinces such as Kampot, Kampong Speu, and Kandal, while its southern boundary meets Vietnam.

🇨🇷 Coronado – Our Costa Rica volunteer program is based in Coronado, a lively suburb of San Jose with a population of nearly 60,000. The orientation day is typically divided into two parts:

Theoretical Overview: The first part of the day focuses on key information to help you settle in, including cultural ‘dos and don’ts,’ safety advice, an overview of your project, and team introductions. This session ensures you feel confident and well-prepared before starting your placement.

Practical Introduction: The second part introduces you to your local area. The team will guide you to essential locations such as shops, ATMs, and transport hubs. They will also assist with practicalities such as arranging money exchange and securing a local SIM card. Please note that the exact orientation schedule may vary by country, but rest assured that our local teams will make sure you’re ready for your volunteering journey.

For many first-time travellers, heading abroad can feel both exciting and daunting. At PMGY, we take every precaution to make our childcare volunteer abroad programs as safe as possible. While no experience can ever be 100% risk-free, our robust safety measures provide peace of mind for both volunteers and their families.

Every program has been personally inspected and approved by a PMGY director. We’ve lived in the Volunteer House, experienced the orientation, and worked on the projects ourselves. Pre-Departure and In-Country Guidance

Our local teams cover all the essentials, including project introductions, emergency procedures, tips for using local transport, and cultural differences. Volunteers also receive a full list of important contact numbers, ensuring you always know who to reach out to.

General Safety Tips

While our local teams work hard to ensure your safety, we encourage volunteers to follow these general tips for an even more secure experience:

• Be modest with jewellery worn in public.
• Avoid drinking tap water.
• Stay vigilant in crowds or near beggars; distractions may be used to target you.
• Be discreet when handling money in public.
• Plan your journeys carefully, especially at night, and know your destination in advance.
• Use only reputable transport providers; recommendations will be provided during your orientation.
• Stay in groups at night and avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas.
• Keep valuables safe, especially when heading out of the accommodation.
• Be cautious of traffic, always looking left and right before crossing roads.
• Never accept food or drinks from strangers.

Some of our projects are within walking distance of the Volunteer House, while others are not. For those further away, PMGY provides transport via minivan or private car to ensure you get to and from your placement with ease.

🇰🇭 Bakod Village – On the Cambodia volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is included in your Program Fee. The main project is conveniently located on the same grounds as the volunteer accommodation, making the daily commute a short walk.

🇨🇷 Coronado – On the Costa Rica volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Transport will typically be by local bus or walking. The bus stop is conveniently located just outside the volunteer accommodation. The local team will assist you in learning the routes, helping you confidently navigate your daily commute.

🇪🇨 Quito – On the Ecuador volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Most volunteers will use local buses, with the bus stop located near your host family. The local team will ensure you are comfortable with the routes, so you can easily manage the commute to and from your project.

🇬🇭 Accra – On the Ghana volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Volunteers typically share the cost of taxis to their placements. The local team will guide you through the process during orientation. Heavy traffic and poor road infrastructure are common in Accra, and journeys can take anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour from the Volunteer House.

🇮🇳 Faridabad – On the India volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is included in your Program Fee. Our local team operates private transport networks to take you to and from your placement. If the project is not within walking distance, transport is provided by tuk-tuk or minivan, all included in your Program Fee.

🇵🇪 Cusco – On the Peru volunteer program, the cost of your transport to the project is not included in your Program Fee. Volunteers typically use local buses or walk. Bus stops are conveniently located near host families or the Spanish school. The local team will guide you through the routes, ensuring you’re confident navigating your commute.

🇵🇹 Porto – On the Portugal volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Most placements are located within Porto and can typically be reached by a short walk and a metro journey from the accommodation. On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to your project, introduce you to the staff, and ensure you are comfortable navigating the route independently for the remainder of your placement.

🇿🇦 Cape Town – On the South Africa volunteer program, the cost of your transport to the project is not included in your Program Fee. Most volunteers use Uber, although some placements are within walking distance of the Volunteer House. Commutes generally take around 30 minutes. The local team will assist you in navigating transport or pair you with an experienced volunteer at your placement.

🇱🇰 Ambalangoda – On the Sri Lanka volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is included in your Program Fee. Transport is typically provided by tuk-tuk or private car. Commute times range from 10 to 45 minutes each way, depending on the location of your project.

🇹🇿 Arusha – On the Tanzania volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. The majority of projects are within walking distance from the Volunteer House, but some are further afield. In these latter cases, you can take a local bus (dala dala) or a tuk-tuk to your placement, with travel times of up to 45 minutes for your volunteer work in Tanzania. During your orientation, the local team will guide you through the transport system and provide advice on costs. If you’re ever unsure about fares, they’ll be happy to assist.

🇻🇳 Hanoi – On the Vietnam volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is included in your Program Fee. Most placements are within a one-hour commute of the Volunteer House. Volunteers receive a bus pass or are reimbursed for travel fares weekly. The bus station is a short walk from the Volunteer House.

🇹🇿 Zanzibar – On the Zanzibar volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. The majority of projects are within walking distance from the Volunteer House, but some are further afield. In these latter cases, you can take a local bus (dala dala) or a tuk-tuk to your placement, with travel times of up to 30 minutes for your volunteer work in Tanzania. During your orientation, the local team will guide you through the transport system and provide advice on costs. If you’re ever unsure about fares, they’ll be happy to assist.

PMGY welcomes volunteers of all nationalities and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 17, and there is no upper age limit. All volunteers need to have a good level of English, although it does not need to be your first language. You do not need to speak the local language; however, learning a few words during your time with us will go a long way and greatly enrich your experience!

For volunteers in South America, we recommend speaking a reasonable level of Spanish before your trip. While there are no specific language requirements to join the program and beginners are welcome, the ability to speak Spanish—and a passion for learning more—will significantly enhance your experience. English is generally not widely spoken, so our programs in South America should be viewed as broader language immersion experiences. If you do not speak Spanish, you may find it challenging to communicate, which could lead to frustration. We strongly encourage participants to prepare for this aspect of their trip.

All participants must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering abroad with us. No formal experience or qualifications are required—just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to prepare!

To confirm your place on a PMGY program, you need to pay a Registration Fee. The remaining Program Fee is due no less than 60 days before your program start date.
