Background to the Elephant Program
Thailand is home to both wild and domesticated Asian elephant populations. Sadly, the domestic population comprises elephants that have been captured from the wild or bred in captivity, often trained or broken to work in the tourist or logging industries.
Today, the wild elephant population in Thailand faces significant challenges to its survival. It is estimated that approximately 2,200 wild elephants remain, inhabiting open grasslands and dense rainforests across the country. Ironically, domestic elephants, once heavily used in the logging industry, have inadvertently contributed to the destruction of their own natural habitat.
When logging was banned in 1989, many elephants formerly used in the industry were redirected to the tourism sector. Others were taken to cities, forced to beg on busy streets to earn a living. This unnatural and harmful practice exposes elephants to severe health issues and puts them at high risk of road traffic accidents, often resulting in fatalities for both the elephants and their mahouts.
Tragically, there are currently no laws in Thailand to protect these animals from such mistreatment. This highlights the urgent need for action, and that’s where our participants make a difference. This sanctuary provides a safe haven for elephants to retire and receive the respect they deserve. WFFT – If you’re looking to be a responsible elephant volunteer in Thailand, this is the perfect place to make a difference. This wildlife volunteering abroad project offers you the chance to learn about these majestic creatures, understand the challenges they face, and become part of the solution.
The rescue centre provides a safe haven where rescued elephants can roam in near-natural surroundings. Forested areas and grasslands have been specially created by purchasing large pieces of land to replicate their natural habitat. Spacious enclosures, some covering up to 5 hectares, are designed with natural trees, lakes, and grazing areas that allow elephants to socialise and move freely. Importantly, no elephant is ever chained, day or night.
The centre is committed to giving elephants the freedom they deserve in a secure and natural environment. Lifelong veterinary care, along with the best husbandry and tailored diets, is provided to ensure their well-being. Your Volunteer Role & Typical Work Day
As an elephant volunteer in Thailand, you will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the project. Your responsibilities may include:

The day begins early at 6:20am at the Volunteer House, which serves as the hub for organising and orientating volunteers. You will typically finish your volunteering with animals around 5pm, with several breaks throughout the day for meals, water, and rest. Volunteers work six days a week, with one designated day off.

Each day, volunteers are assigned to groups, with team leaders guiding and supporting their teams through daily tasks. Other Things to Consider Volunteering in Thailand
Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you’re in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you’re travelling with fellow trip participants.
Hands-Off Approach - The Thailand elephant volunteer program promotes a hands-off approach to conservation. This means limited physical interaction with the animals, focusing instead on their natural behaviours and needs. As an elephant volunteer in Thailand, your role includes essential tasks such as feeding, cleaning enclosures, and providing behavioural and environmental enrichment. This program prioritises the welfare of the elephants, ensuring a true conservation experience, unlike some tourist-oriented activities such as riding or bathing the animals. Any physical contact with the elephants is limited to necessary situations as part of your duties.
Physically & Emotionally Demanding - The work involved as an elephant conservation volunteer in Thailand can be physically and emotionally demanding. Each volunteer works at their own pace, with varying strengths and abilities. It’s important to respect that not everyone will perform tasks the same way or at the same speed. Every contribution is valuable, and the Thailand elephant sanctuary volunteer program fosters a supportive environment where all efforts make a difference.
Additional Tasks - Volunteers at the Thailand elephant sanctuary may be asked to take on additional tasks outside project hours to help maintain the Volunteer House, contributing to a positive and supportive environment. These tasks include House Duty, which involves keeping communal areas tidy and completing light housework, and Doggie Duty, where volunteers care for the resident dogs by washing, feeding, and walking them. These small efforts ensure a welcoming and enjoyable space for everyone.
Save Some Time to Travel – This program offers a highly "volunteer-focused" experience, with participants involved in project activities 6 days a week and having 1 day off. We recommend reserving time after your program for independent travel, as the schedule doesn’t include a traditional weekend travel culture. On your day off, you can visit local attractions such as nearby beaches, caves, and waterfalls. However, travel options are limited to areas close to the project site, and longer excursions may not be possible.

Volunteer House
During your time on the Thailand volunteer program, you will stay in one of our Volunteer Houses in the Phetchaburi region of southern Thailand. The houses are located on the grounds of the elephant conservation project, providing an immersive experience where you live close to your volunteer work. Nearby villages are within walking distance and have convenience stores, while there is also a small onsite shop selling snacks, drinks and souvenirs.
You will live alongside other international participants in European style concrete and brick bungalows. Fresh bed linen is provided weekly throughout your stay. Free Wi-Fi is available in certain communal areas, although the connection can occasionally be intermittent. Volunteers may therefore also wish to purchase a local SIM card for use with an unlocked mobile phone.
There are 2 main communal areas where participants can relax, socialise and meet before their volunteer work each morning. Refrigerator space is available for items that need to be kept chilled. A local laundry service is also available, along with limited facilities for handwashing clothes.
We recommend bringing a small padlock for personal belongings, while valuables can also be stored securely with the local team. Power cuts can occasionally occur and usually last no more than a couple of hours.

Our Shared Option provides a social experience where you can live alongside other participants throughout your time at the project. Rooms typically accommodate 2 to 3 volunteers and are arranged as same sex accommodation as standard. Couples, friends or family members may be accommodated together when requested in advance.
Each room has single beds and a fan for additional comfort. Bathroom facilities are communal and shared with other volunteers, with western style toilets and showers available.

During your volunteer trip to Thailand, all meals will be provided and prepared by the local team. Meals predominantly feature traditional Thai cuisine in buffet format, and options are clearly labelled for meat, vegetarian, and vegan diets. Some western-style meals are offered weekly to add variety. Filtered water is available free of charge at the accommodation.

If you have severe allergies, ensure this is communicated both before your arrival and upon arrival in Thailand. PMGY welcomes elephant volunteers in Thailand of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all volunteers need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Thailand will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a Thailand elephant volunteer, you must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the elephant projects — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!
Volunteering overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

For your volunteer trip to Thailand, you should book your flights to either Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK) Airport in Bangkok to arrive on the designated Sunday start date between the hours of 6am and 2pm. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Thailand elephant volunteer.
Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Sunday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

Over this time, you’ll be able to make a lasting positive impact while having plenty of time to explore Thailand’s incredible sights and culture during your weekends.
Many of our Thailand elephant volunteers who joined us for just 2 weeks often expressed that their time was too short. They leave wishing they had stayed longer to further engage with the projects they’ve grown passionate about. If your schedule allows, we highly encourage you to consider a longer stay to make the most of this life-changing experience!
While our programs are available for longer durations, volunteers can initially sign up for a maximum of 12 weeks in each destination. In the past, we’ve found that some volunteers commit to extended placements but later wish to adjust their plans for independent travel or to join another program. Please note, however, that Program Fees are non-refundable once committed. If you arrive and find yourself loving the program (as many do!), you are more than welcome to extend your placement. Extensions are subject to availability at the time of your request, but our team will do their best to accommodate your desire to stay longer and continue making an impact.
