Itinerary
We’ve created a 15-day sample itinerary showcasing the ultimate Ghana school trip, blending volunteering, travel, adventure, and cultural immersion. While this provides a great starting point, we understand every school has unique goals. That’s why we offer bespoke itineraries tailored to your needs - whether you want to adjust the trip length, focus solely on volunteering, or combine it with travel experiences. Whatever your preferences, we’ll ensure your Ghana school trip is affordable, structured, safe, and unforgettable.
Welcome to Ghana! Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, you will be met by members of the PMGY Ghana team before being transferred to your accommodation in central Accra, which will be your base for the next two weeks.
Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to relax after your journey, explore the local area, or visit one of Accra’s shopping malls before the program begins.
Your first full day in Ghana is dedicated to helping your group settle in and introducing you to the country, local community, and the program ahead. The morning begins with an orientation around the local area, where you will become familiar with nearby amenities and gain an understanding of daily life in Accra.
You will then travel into the city to visit some of Ghana’s most significant landmarks, including Independence Square, while learning about the country’s journey to independence and its rich history. There will also be time to experience the atmosphere of Accra before returning for a traditional Ghanaian lunch.
During the afternoon, our team will provide a full program briefing, covering health and safety, cultural expectations, volunteering responsibilities, and what to expect over the coming two weeks. This session is also a great opportunity to ask questions and ensure everyone feels confident and ready before beginning the community projects the following day.
Afternoons are dedicated to volunteering within the local community at one of our partner preparatory schools in Accra. These community-based schools provide affordable early years education and care for children from low-income families, helping them build a strong foundation before progressing through the education system. Your group will support local teachers while making a meaningful contribution to the children’s learning, development, and confidence.
Students will assist across a range of age groups, helping with reading, writing, creative activities, sports, singing, storytelling, arts and crafts, and supervised play. There may also be opportunities to support younger children with daily routines and provide encouragement through positive interaction and one to one attention. Local staff value the additional support, allowing them to spend more time with individual children, while giving students a rewarding opportunity to experience education within a Ghanaian community and build genuine connections with both the children and teachers.
Your adventure continues with an early morning departure for Ghana’s beautiful Volta Region, renowned for its lush landscapes, peaceful villages, and stunning natural scenery. After arriving, you will spend the day exploring the region, hiking to scenic viewpoints with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside, visiting local villages, and experiencing everyday life beyond the capital. You’ll also visit the spectacular Wli Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in West Africa, with the opportunity to cool off in its natural pools before spending the evening in the Volta Region.
On day 8, your journey continues with more exploration around the Volta Region and Lake Volta, the world’s largest man-made lake. Along the way, you’ll enjoy more breathtaking scenery, learn about local culture and traditions, and experience one of Ghana’s most beautiful regions before returning to Accra in the evening, ready to begin the second week of your school trip.
The second week brings more opportunities to give back to the community. Mornings will focus on completing the renovation project, while afternoons will be spent engaging with children at the childcare project. With your bonds growing stronger, you’ll feel even more connected to the local community.
Evenings will feature fun and engaging activities such as art classes, a culture night, and a games night. The week concludes with a briefing about your upcoming Cape Coast trip.
On day 13, we travel to Kakum National Park, where students will enjoy lunch before taking on the famous Canopy Walkway. Suspended up to 40 metres above the rainforest floor, the series of hanging bridges offers spectacular views across one of Ghana’s most important protected forests. The day continues with a visit to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where students will gain a powerful insight into Ghana’s history and the transatlantic slave trade, providing an important educational and cultural experience.
Day 14 offers a more relaxed pace as you explore Ghana’s beautiful coastline. Spend time unwinding on one of the region’s scenic beaches, enjoy a walk along the shore, browse local markets and souvenir stalls, or simply take in the atmosphere before beginning the journey back towards Accra. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on everything experienced over the previous two weeks, bringing your Ghana school trip to a memorable close before departure.
On your final day, you’ll travel back to Kotoka International Airport in Accra for your departure flight. Depending on your flight time, there may be an opportunity to enjoy some final sightseeing, pick up a few last minute souvenirs, or spend a little more time exploring the city before heading to the airport.
As your Ghana school trip comes to an end, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories, and a deeper understanding of the country’s people, culture, and communities. After two weeks of meaningful volunteering, exciting adventures, and unique cultural experiences, it’s time to begin your journey home. Safe travels!

Meals
You’ll enjoy three meals daily during your school trip to Ghana. Most meals will feature traditional Ghanaian dishes, often known for their rich and spicy flavours. However, the spice level can be adjusted to suit the group’s preferences, ensuring everyone enjoys the experience. All meals will be freshly prepared daily, offering you the chance to immerse yourself in the unique tastes of Ghanaian cuisine. Western dishes will occasionally be included in the trip itinerary, and vegetarian options will always be available.
Ghanaian food staples include jollof rice, cassava, and plantain, with sweet potatoes and yams playing an important role in the diet. Meat options are usually limited to fish or chicken, as pork, lamb, and beef are harder to source and typically more expensive. Fresh dairy products are also scarce.
* Our team will do their best to cater for dietary requirements, but this cannot always be guaranteed. Volunteers may need to purchase additional ingredients at their own expense. Please note any dietary requirements in your application and re-iterate them to the local team on arrival. For major concerns, contact the PMGY International Team before confirming your place on the program.
