Choosing a Trip

Of course! While PMGY was founded in the UK, we have grown to operate internationally, welcoming participants from around the globe to our programs. Over the past decade, we’ve proudly hosted thousands of volunteers from various countries. From the cultural wonders of France and Italy to the vibrant traditions of Mexico and India, the stunning landscapes of Namibia and Russia, and the dynamic countries of Ireland and China – these are just a few examples of the many nations represented in our global community.

Everyone should have the opportunity to experience life from a fresh perspective, immerse themselves in meaningful projects, and form friendships that span the world. Our programs unite people, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose, no matter where you’re from.

PMGY is dedicated to ensuring our fees remain as low as possible and making our programs affordable and accessible without compromising safety or the quality of your experience.

Your Registration Fee is allocated to the comprehensive support we proudly offer. This includes 24/7 telephone and online assistance, detailed Volunteer Handbooks, and engaging interactive webinars to ensure you’re fully prepared for your journey. Meanwhile, the remaining Program Fee directly supports our in-country teams, covering essentials such as your accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, in-country support, and the upkeep of the projects where you’ll be volunteering. We pride ourselves on maintaining transparency with our fees, a quality that our volunteers consistently appreciate.

Unlike other organisations that invest heavily in flashy brochures, high-street offices, or are owned by larger travel companies with multiple shareholders, we keep things simple and focused. PMGY has fully embraced the digital age by operating through an online presence. By eliminating unnecessary overheads like outdated brochures and high-street offices and remaining independent from external financial interests, we can keep costs down while ensuring a meaningful and impactful experience for every participant.

PMGY does not offer volunteer opportunities in orphanages in any of our locations. Extensive research has shown that orphanage volunteering can unintentionally fuel an industry that separates children from their families, leaving them more vulnerable to neglect and abuse. For this reason, we do not support these institutions through our volunteer network, and our local teams do not engage in orphanage-based volunteering.

Instead, we proudly focus on providing alternative childcare volunteering opportunities. In these placements, children attend the project setting during the day and return to their families in the evenings. This ensures that the environment does not involve residential care but is safe, responsibly managed, and thoroughly vetted. These projects allow volunteers to make a meaningful and valued impact while adhering to ethical and responsible practices.

People from all over the world join PMGY, each seeking their unique adventure and experience. Because of this, it’s impossible to pinpoint a single “best destination.” Everyone has different preferences, expectations, and goals when volunteering abroad. That’s why we offer a diverse range of programs across the globe, each designed to provide an amazing, one-of-a-kind, and meaningful experience tailored to our participants’ interests and aspirations.

Most PMGY participants are aged between 17 and 25, embarking on their first big adventure and seeking a safe, structured, and social experience. Most of our volunteers — around 90% — are solo travellers, with the remaining 10% bringing along a friend or two. We design our programs to create a welcoming and social atmosphere where solo adventurers can join a vibrant group of like-minded individuals.

We’re proud to welcome participants worldwide, though many of our volunteers come from the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada, and Australia. While our programs tend to attract a more significant proportion of female participants — usually around 80% — we love having a diverse mix of volunteers to enrich the experience for everyone.

For most volunteers, this is their first time joining an experience like this, and it often becomes a powerful confidence booster for further travels — whether as part of the same trip or in future adventures.

No, you don’t need to be fluent in English to join our program! While many of our participants are native English speakers, we’re thrilled to welcome a diverse range of European and international volunteers who bring their unique perspectives to the experience.

We do emphasise that our programs are conducted and hosted in English (or Spanish for our South American destinations), so it’s important that you feel confident enough to understand and communicate effectively. This ensures you can fully engage with the activities, local team, and fellow participants, making the most of your time on the program!

We offer an incredible variety of placements in areas such as education, childcare, wildlife conservation, and healthcare. Whether you’re passionate about teaching, supporting children, protecting wildlife, or assisting in medical settings, there’s something for everyone!

Each placement comes with its unique challenges and opportunities. This means your role will vary depending on the project you choose to join. For a detailed understanding of your volunteer role, we would like you to explore the information webpage for the specific program you’re interested in.

To simplify this, we’ve created dedicated Facebook Groups for all our destinations. Whether you’re interested in hearing about first-hand experiences or looking to chat with fellow travellers, these groups are the perfect place to start. Simply search on Facebook for ‘PMGY’ followed by the destination name, such as ‘PMGY Sri Lanka,’ ‘PMGY India,’ or ‘PMGY Ghana.’

Another great way to get inspired is by visiting our main Instagram account. Here, you can browse through real-life stories, photos, and videos shared by former volunteers. It’s also a fantastic platform to interact with other volunteers and get a feel for what to expect on your adventure.

Just so you know, in keeping with our Privacy Policy, we cannot share the personal contact details of previous participants.

PMGY welcomes thousands of volunteers from all corners of the globe each year, so creating a vibrant and social atmosphere within our programs is something we genuinely prioritise.

Naturally, some programs and destinations are more popular and accessible, offering a lively environment with plenty of fellow volunteers to share the experience with. On the other hand, we also cater to those seeking a more independent and off-the-beaten-path adventure. These destinations provide a quieter, more personal experience and are perfect for those who enjoy travelling more independently.

We understand that every volunteer has their preferences, whether you thrive in a bustling social setting or seek a more close-knit, reflective journey. It’s essential to consider what suits you best when choosing a program. If you’d like to know more about the social vibe in a specific destination, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Volunteer feedback often highlights that joining our programs outside the busy European summer months offers the most enriching and immersive experience. This is particularly true regarding participating in your project and fully engaging with the local culture.

During the summer months, our programs peak, especially in our most popular locations. This means there are often higher numbers of volunteers both at the projects and within the accommodation.

However, stepping outside these peak months opens opportunities for a more personal and community-focused experience. You’re more likely to dive deeper into your project work and connect meaningfully with the local community, making your volunteer journey even more memorable!

To join PMGY as a volunteer, you must meet the minimum age requirement for your chosen program, typically 17 or 18 years old on your start date. Interestingly, around 80% of our volunteers fall within the 18–25 age range, making it a perfect environment for younger adventurers seeking a structured and social experience.

However, there’s no upper age limit to our programs, and we’ve proudly welcomed participants up to the age of 70! While our more mature volunteers often gain immense personal fulfilment from the experience, it’s worth noting that some have found it a little more challenging to integrate with a predominantly younger crowd. Additionally, certain expectations — such as accommodation quality, community structure, or project communication — might differ from what some older participants are used to.

We welcome volunteers of all ages and strongly encourage open-mindedness, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new experiences. It’s important to understand that most participants are aged between 17–25, creating a dynamic and youthful energy across our programs.

PMGY proudly welcomes volunteers of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds to join our programs and be part of something truly special. The minimum age to participate typically ranges from 17 to 18, depending on the program, and there’s no upper age limit — meaning our opportunities are open to everyone! For specific age requirements, check the program page of interest.

While a good level of English is required, it doesn’t have to be your first language. Additionally, you don’t need to speak the local language to make a difference — although learning a few words while you’re with us can enhance your experience and help you connect with the local community.

All volunteers must provide a clean criminal background check before participating. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept individuals with previous criminal convictions. Generally, our programs do not require formal experience or qualifications — just plenty of energy, enthusiasm, and a readiness to dive into the experience! Additional documentation may be necessary for those interested in medical and healthcare projects before you can begin.

Volunteering abroad can be both physically and mentally demanding. As such, all participants must be fit in both respects. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that could affect your ability to take part, these must be disclosed during your online application. If you’re unsure about your suitability, our friendly team is always here to help — simply contact us before committing to the program.

All participants are required to agree to the PMGY Code of Conduct before departure and must adhere to this while in-country. Failure to follow the Code of Conduct may result in termination from the program without a refund, so please ensure you fully understand and respect the expectations.

In addition to the Program and Registration Fees associated with our projects, there are a few additional costs you’ll need to plan for:

• Flights
• Travel Insurance
• Visa Cost (if required)
• Immunisation Costs (if required)
• Background Check
• Spending Money

The amount of extra spending money you’ll need as a PMGY volunteer can vary depending on several factors. These include how you spend your free time and the number of souvenirs you bring back home! For instance, if you’re planning an unforgettable safari adventure in Tanzania or an epic trekking experience in Nepal, you’ll want to budget accordingly to make the most of these incredible opportunities.

Some people wonder if they can arrange their own accommodation, meals, or transportation during their PMGY experience. While we understand the appeal of personalising your arrangements, we aim to ensure a safe, structured, and secure experience for all participants. Altering these foundational aspects of the program can complicate logistics and compromise the support we strive to provide.

For this reason, joining PMGY requires a commitment to the full fee structure of the program. If a participant decides not to utilise certain program elements, such as meals or transportation, we cannot offer discounts or refunds. This structure allows us to maintain our programs’ quality, safety, and reliability for everyone involved.

Although most of our volunteers work in developing countries, we go above and beyond to ensure your safe and enriching experience with us. Our programs are designed to provide first-time travellers with a structured and secure experience, offering the perfect balance between safety, structure, and the freedom to explore and immerse yourself. For more details, please visit our Safety & Wellbeing page.

Volunteer safety is a top priority for us, and each of our destinations is monitored regularly. A member of the PMGY International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program. Additionally, we closely follow guidance from the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Through regular communication with our local teams, we ensure that volunteers are never placed in unstable or unsafe regions.

The PMGY International Team has visited and participated in every program we offer. We’ve examined all aspects of our set-up, from the living conditions and local neighbourhoods to the food you’ll enjoy. This attention to detail ensures our projects meet the highest standards. Our local teams, who are experienced professionals with years of hosting international volunteers, act as PMGY’s on-the-ground representatives. They provide 24/7 support throughout your stay and are always ready to assist with any emergencies. Additionally, our 24-hour international emergency line is always available, and our in-country staff have access to local medical professionals if needed.

When you join a PMGY program, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook. This guide covers various essential topics, including health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have any additional questions, our support network is available online and via phone 24 hours a day. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to feel fully prepared for your adventure. On top of this, our International Team hosts a monthly Introductory Webinar and Safety Webinar, providing interactive opportunities to learn more about our projects and tips for managing safety overseas.

Once you arrive in-country, you’ll receive a detailed orientation covering the general program, your specific project, and country-specific safety advice. During this session, you’ll also have the chance to purchase a local SIM card — a highly recommended step to ensure you’re always contactable. Additionally, you’ll be given a comprehensive list of important contact numbers for your reference.

While we cannot promise a completely trouble-free experience, we have taken every precaution to ensure each program is as safe as possible. We strongly suggest that you follow the guidance provided by our local teams to maximise your safety and enjoyment while abroad.

Your Registration Fee is what allows PMGY’s International Team to provide the exceptional level of support and service we’re known for. This fee covers vital elements such as staff administrative costs, regular program visits to ensure quality, and our 24/7 support service. You’d be amazed at the behind-the-scenes effort we put into creating and maintaining our volunteer programs, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently, and seamlessly.

Your Program Fee, on the other hand, covers all the essentials for your time in your host country. This includes your meals, accommodation, airport pickup, local transport, and in-country orientation (specific to your destination). Our local teams in every volunteer destination are dedicated to supporting you every step of the way. They work tirelessly to ensure you feel safe, are well-prepared for the unique cultural experience, and can make the most of your time with us.

By visiting your chosen program page, you’ll find a ‘Apply Now’ button. Clicking on this will guide you to the Online Application pages for that specific project. The process is quick and straightforward, taking just about 15 minutes. While it’s a speedy application, the more details you provide about yourself, the better equipped we are to tailor the experience to your expectations and ensure it’s everything you hope for — and more!

If you can share the type of experience you’re looking for, we’ll be in a great position to advise you. For instance, if you thrive in a buzzing environment surrounded by fellow volunteers, let us know! Alternatively, if you’re an independent traveller who prefers a tranquil location off the beaten path, we’d love to hear that, too. This way, we can help match you to the program that perfectly aligns with your personality and goals.

You can apply for most of our programs at any time. However, we highly recommend that you apply early to secure your spot. Many of our programs have limited capacity, and spaces tend to fill quickly, especially during our peak period from June to August. If you plan to travel during this time, applying well in advance is essential to avoid disappointment. Please make sure you’re fully committed to joining the program before applying.

To apply, head to the individual project page of your choice and click the “Apply Now” button. This will guide you through our straightforward online Application Process.

If your plans change after your application and you need to adjust your start dates, this may incur an Admin Fee. Any changes are subject to availability and must be requested at least 60 days before your program’s start date.

Feedback from our volunteers consistently highlights that 4-6 weeks is the perfect time to immerse yourself fully in the experience. This timeframe allows you to integrate into the local community, get deeply involved in your project, and impact community development. Plus, with more weekends to spare, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the local culture, sights, and adventures!

Volunteers who join us for just 2 weeks often share that they wish they’d stayed longer to dive deeper into the experience and make a bigger difference. So, if your schedule allows, consider extending your time with us for a richer and more rewarding journey.

For those eager to explore multiple destinations, why not take a look at our Encounter Programs? These unique opportunities allow you to experience 2-4 weeks across 3-10 destinations, offering an incredible chance to broaden your horizons while volunteering.

For most of our programs abroad, we offer two convenient start dates per month. While we understand that time constraints and personal schedules can sometimes make things tricky, we highly recommend that participants arrive on these designated start dates.

We’ve designed our programs to provide a structured experience, and starting on the set date ensures you can dive straight into the itinerary alongside your fellow participants. Late arrivals, while sometimes unavoidable, can be challenging as they may lead to missing out on the crucial orientation session. This session is a cornerstone of the program, covering essential information to help you settle in and make the most of your volunteer experience. Attendance is not only encouraged — it’s compulsory!

If you foresee any issues with arriving on the set start date or need to arrive early or late for any reason, please don’t hesitate to contact us before applying. One of our team members will be happy to advise whether an alternative arrangement is possible and inform you of any additional costs this may involve.

You can travel and volunteer with friends, family, or your partner! We’re happy to arrange for you to stay in the same accommodation and work on the same project if that’s what you’d like. However, please remember that all our volunteer accommodation is organised single-sex.

To ensure you’re placed alongside your chosen travel companions, mention this in the ‘Special Requirements’ box when completing your online application. We’ll do our best to make it happen!

In some of our destinations, it might be possible to combine programs, allowing you to contribute to multiple projects during your time with us. This is a fantastic way to expand your experience and make an even bigger impact! However, we require participants to commit to at least two weeks per project to ensure a meaningful and productive experience for everyone involved.

If this option excites you, we encourage you to contact us before submitting your application. Simply contact us, and our team will be more than happy to discuss the possibilities with you!

Many people love the idea of joining PMGY in multiple destinations, and we couldn’t agree more! It’s a brilliant way to immerse yourself in diverse cultures while making a positive impact across different communities. We encourage this adventurous spirit — it’s a truly rewarding experience.

If you’re planning to participate in multiple locations, we suggest applying to just one destination to begin with. During the Online Application process, you’ll find a ‘Special Requirements’ box. List all the programs you’d like to join, and our International Team will handle the arrangements for you. This saves you from completing multiple application forms and makes the process seamless and hassle-free.

Alternatively, you might want to consider our Encounter Programs. These specially designed programs allow you to stay for 2-4 weeks in each destination, covering 3-10 locations, with total durations ranging from 6 to 40 weeks.

To join PMGY, the first step is to make your Registration Fee payment. If we can’t offer you a place on the program, your Registration Fee will be fully refunded within 24 hours of your application. The remaining Program Fee is then due no less than 60 days before your program start date.

Payments made before the 60-day deadline can be completed in one lump sum or split into several instalments — whatever works best for you! Payments can be quickly processed through our website using all major debit and credit cards. Alternatively, you can transfer the funds directly to our international bank account. Detailed instructions for making your payment will be provided in our email communication. Please note that card payments are subject to a 5% additional fee for participants outside the UK and EU to cover the bank charges PMGY incurs.

If you are applying within 60 days, then the full balance will be payable once your application is accepted. If you’re applying within 30 days of your program start date, the full payment will be required to secure your place. As always, in the unlikely event that we cannot offer you a spot on the program, your payment will be fully refunded within 48 hours of applying. We aim to make the process as smooth and reassuring as possible!

It’s possible to join PMGY as a volunteer as part of your university or college placement! However, please note that PMGY cannot guarantee our programs will meet your academic institution’s specific requirements. We highly recommend that participants discuss their placement objectives with a member of the PMGY International Team before applying. When necessary, school, college, or university representatives are welcome to contact us directly to explore whether the program suits your course requirements.

The PMGY International Team can help with the paperwork you need once your place on the program is confirmed. In addition, project staff at your PMGY placement are happy to sign off on any documents your course tutors require. While we’ll do our utmost to accommodate your needs, we cannot guarantee compliance with every learning objective or academic requirement. That said, PMGY frequently welcomes students from disciplines such as medicine, nursing, childcare, and psychology, and we’ve established relationships with some leading universities.

If you’re a course tutor and would like to learn more about how PMGY’s programs could meet placement requirements for your course, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly to schedule a meeting.

Before You Depart

For PMGY volunteers teaching English abroad, the primary “qualifications” you need are energy, commitment, and enthusiasm! But if you’d like to feel a bit more prepared before stepping into the classroom, our handy online TEFL course is the perfect way to gain confidence and learn the basics of English language teaching.

At just 60 hours, this online course is incredibly flexible and convenient. You can complete it at your own pace, whenever it suits you, without leaving your home! With a generous 180-day window to finish the course, you have all the time you need to fit it around your schedule. Whether you dedicate an hour here or there, it all adds up, and there’s no pressure.

Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll have essential teaching skills and an internationally accredited certificate. If you discover that teaching is your true passion, this course provides a solid foundation to build upon with more advanced modules in the future. The course is broken down into five engaging modules, covering topics such as “The Roles of the Teacher” and “Lesson Planning.”

Every Tuesday, the PMGY International Team hosts one of four fantastic pre-departure webinars to help you feel fully prepared and excited for your upcoming adventure! These sessions last approximately 45 minutes and are packed with invaluable advice and insights. Hosted by a member of our knowledgeable International Team, who has extensive hands-on experience with our global projects, you’ll gain a wealth of tips and guidance. Best of all, you can join from anywhere worldwide — log in using your computer, a stable internet connection, and a pair of headphones. And if your family or friends want to join in, they’re welcome too!

If you’re still exploring your options and haven’t signed up for a program yet, we highly recommend joining our Introductory Webinar. During this 45-minute session, a member of our International Team will introduce you to the world of volunteering abroad, highlight our amazing destinations, and discuss our programs’ social and safety aspects. It’s the perfect way to get a feel for what PMGY is about!

We offer three tailored webinars for volunteers who have already confirmed their place to help you prepare for your journey. Please sign up a few days in advance to ensure you have the appropriate links and information to join the webinar on the day.

Travel Essentials Pre-Departure Webinar – Perfect for covering all the basics to ensure you’re ready to hit the ground running.

Program Preparation Webinar – Specifically designed for participants in childcare and teaching community work programs, this session dives into the details.

Safety & Wellbeing Overseas Webinar – Focused on understanding the risks associated with overseas travel and sharing practical tips to help you stay safe throughout your journey.

These webinars are a fantastic way to build confidence, ask questions, and connect with others before you embark on your life-changing PMGY experience!

As a PMGY volunteer, it’s essential to consider whether you might need vaccinations in preparation for your upcoming adventure. While we’d love to offer advice, PMGY cannot provide specific guidance on medical matters as we are not qualified healthcare professionals. For this reason, it’s essential to consult your local doctor or travel clinic several months before your departure.

Your doctor or nurse will be the best source of advice regarding any vaccinations or malaria prevention you might need based on your destination. They’ll ensure you have all the information to keep you safe and healthy throughout your volunteer experience. For additional details, you can also visit the NHS Fit For Travel website, which offers helpful resources to support your preparation.

Having the right travel insurance policy is absolutely essential for your volunteer adventure abroad. That’s why all PMGY international volunteers must be fully covered for the entire duration of their trip. This includes your journey to and from the host country and any onward travel. While PMGY works hard to ensure your trip is as safe as possible, unexpected situations can sometimes arise. A solid travel insurance policy will give you peace of mind and help you handle any challenges that come your way.

To make things easier, we’ve partnered with Howdens to offer an affordable and comprehensive insurance policy tailored specifically for our international volunteers. This policy covers all the essentials and is available to participants worldwide up to age 65. Whether you’re volunteering in one destination or travelling further afield afterwards, this policy covers you as long as you have selected the appropriate duration for your full trip.

To join a PMGY program, you must provide a clean DBS or Police Check before you travel. An official Governmental or Police Body must issue this. At PMGY, we are committed to ensuring that the volunteers we send to projects are reliable and of sound moral character. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept participants who have any prior criminal convictions.

If you already have a current DBS or Police Check, we’ll accept it if it’s clear and issued within 18 months of your program start date. Upload a copy to your online portal. Remember, this document must be submitted no later than 21 days before your program begins. If you don’t have a valid DBS or Police Check, you’ll need to apply for one.

For UK Participants – You can apply for a “Basic Disclosure” through Gov.uk. The cost is 15 GBP, typically taking around 10 working days to process. To ensure timely submission, we recommend that you apply at least 6 weeks before you leave. The process is straightforward and can be completed online or by post. You only need a Basic Disclosure, not an Enhanced Disclosure. Make sure to list your home address as your residential address in the UK, not PMGY’s office address.

For US Participants – You can apply for a background check through Sentry Link. This costs 19.95 USD and is usually processed within 1-4 days. Alternatively, you can arrange a background check through your local Sheriff’s Office or Governmental Body.

For Dutch Participants – You’ll need a Certificate of Conduct, or VOG, issued by the Dutch Minister of Legal Protection. Your Program Manager will provide you with a signed form to complete your application. Contact your Program Manager to obtain the necessary documentation, including PMGY’s details and signatures. Once completed, submit your forms online to get clearance. The certificate does not be translated into English; we can accept it in Dutch.

For German Participants – You’ll need a Führungszeugnis certificate, also known as a “Police Clearance Certificate,” issued by the Bundesamt Für Justiz (BFJ). This certificate is printed on special green paper and can take up to 14 days to process. We accept the certificate in German, and there’s no need to translate it into English.

For Participants From Other Countries – We recommend obtaining a Police or Criminal Background Check from your local police station or official governmental body.

Please submit all documents within the specified timeframes to guarantee your program placement.

Once you’ve paid your deposit and secured your spot on the program, you’ll receive a comprehensive PMGY Volunteer Handbook! Look out for an email titled ‘Welcome to PMGY,’ which includes a link to download this invaluable resource. Please note that we do not provide hard copies of the Volunteer Handbook, so save the digital version.

This Handbook is your go-to guide for preparing as a PMGY volunteer. From advice on what to pack to detailed steps on obtaining a visa, we’ve covered everything to ensure you’re fully prepared to dive into your experience. It’s packed with essential information to ensure you’re ready to hit the ground running.

We highly recommend that you read through the Handbook carefully. It’s designed to answer most of your questions and help you feel confident and organised for your journey.

All PMGY volunteers will need a visa to join their program, and the requirements vary depending on the destination. In some countries, you can secure your visa upon arrival, while others may require you to arrange this in advance in your home country. Before applying to PMGY, we recommend you contact the embassy in your home country to make sure you are eligible to enter your chosen destination.

Once your place on the program is confirmed, you’ll receive a country-specific Volunteer Handbook with all the details you need to obtain your visa. This guide is designed to help you navigate the process, with instructions primarily tailored to UK participants. However, it’s essential to verify this information with the embassy, as visa requirements can change, and accuracy is subject to the time of writing.

The cost of your visa is not included in your Program Fee and will need to be covered independently. While not all PMGY destinations charge a visa fee, the specifics will be outlined in your Handbook. PMGY does not have affiliations with visa agencies or embassies, so while we’re here to guide you and answer your questions, we cannot directly influence the visa process or liaise with embassies on your behalf.

For many of our PMGY destinations, the local currency is classified as “closed.” This simply means you won’t be able to purchase the currency, such as the Vietnamese Dong or Sri Lankan Rupee before you travel. These currencies can only be obtained once you’re in the host country.

Don’t worry — this is super easy to navigate! The best approach is to withdraw cash from a local ATM upon arrival. As a backup, you might also want to bring some money in your home currency, just in case.

During the first few days of your adventure, you’ll participate in an orientation led by our fantastic local team. They’ll guide you to nearby ATMs and money vendors, ensuring you feel confident about where and how to exchange or withdraw cash. There’s no rush to exchange money as soon as you land at the airport — you’ll have all the support you need to settle in comfortably.

The amount of extra spending money you’ll need as a volunteer with PMGY can vary depending on your plans and preferences. It all comes down to what you choose to do during your free time and how many keepsakes you bring home!

If you’re planning an exciting adventure, like going on safari in Tanzania or trekking through the stunning landscapes of Nepal, you’ll need to budget a bit more for those unforgettable experiences.

Dress codes can vary depending on the country and the specific project you’re involved in. It’s essential to present yourself smartly and respectfully while working within local communities. Don’t worry — we’ll provide all the details in your Volunteer Handbook so you’ll know exactly what to pack! Plus, our local team will review everything during your in-country orientation once you arrive at your PMGY destination.

For women, the general guideline is to cover shoulders, chest, stomach, and thighs. Similarly, for men, shorts should fall below the knee, and shirts should cover the shoulders. While we don’t want to enforce strict dress rules, we kindly ask you to respect the local culture. Dressing appropriately shows cultural sensitivity and earns the respect of the community and your colleagues.

It’s also a great idea to pack some smarter outfits for weekends or special occasions. However, we recommend avoiding tight or very short clothing and any attire with potentially offensive slogans. Additionally, tattoos and piercings should be covered when possible, especially if you’re working with children.

A comprehensive packing list is provided in your Volunteer Handbook, which you’ll receive once your application has been confirmed. This handy guide will ensure you’re fully prepared for your adventure!

Most of our placements are based in or near major cities, meaning you can easily purchase any essentials you might forget or need abroad. Additionally, we recommend leaving extra room in your suitcase — you’re bound to collect some fantastic souvenirs and mementoes during your journey!

We typically recommend that participants embark on their PMGY adventure at the start of their travels rather than after. Our programs are designed for first-time travellers, offering a structured experience with airport pick-up, dedicated volunteer accommodation, and local support. This setup ensures a smooth transition into life abroad and makes the beginning of your journey as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

For those who have already travelled and grown accustomed to a more independent or flexible schedule, our program might not fully align with their expectations. However, if you plan to travel after completing your program, our friendly local team will be delighted to assist you in planning or organising any in-country adventures you wish to pursue.

With PMGY, every penny of your payment directly contributes to the comprehensive structure and support you’ll receive during your volunteer program. This includes essentials such as accommodation, airport pick-ups, 24/7 support from our international and in-country teams, pre-departure training, and the ongoing implementation and monitoring of the projects.

We’re proud to keep our program costs as low and affordable as possible without compromising safety or quality. That said, when factoring in flights, travel insurance, and spending money, you might need a little financial boost. If so, fundraising for your trip can be a fantastic option! Several of our volunteers choose this route, and it’s a great way to engage friends and family in your exciting plans.

To make fundraising simple and effective, PMGY has partnered with the crowdfunding platform GoGetFunding. With this professional service, you can create a personalised fundraising page, set clear financial goals, and share your story with the world. Plus, you can easily promote your page across social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to spread the word far and wide!

On Your Trip

For all of our worldwide programs, you’ll receive a warm welcome at the airport from one of PMGY’s friendly local representatives. The details of the collection service included in your Program Fee can be found on the program page for your specific project of interest.

In destinations where the airport drop-off isn’t included, our local team will gladly assist in arranging a safe and secure transfer. This will typically be organised with one of the local team’s trusted drivers in a comfortable private vehicle. They can usually sort this out with just a few days’ notice, and payment is made directly to the local team. If other volunteers are heading to the airport simultaneously, you might even be able to split the cost.

While we hope you’ll enjoy every moment of your PMGY experience and stay for the entire duration you originally planned, we understand that unexpected changes in travel plans can sometimes occur. If you need to cut your time with PMGY short, it’s essential to notify our local team as soon as possible. This helps them reallocate project resources effectively and support any onward travel plans you may need.

If you decide to leave the program earlier than scheduled, refunds are not available for the project. Your Program Fees are fully committed to our local teams, who make all necessary arrangements to ensure your stay runs smoothly from start to finish.

There are so many ways to stay connected with loved ones back home while you’re on your PMGY adventure! To make life easier, we recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone and purchasing a local SIM card to stay connected. Most of our accommodations also offer Wi-Fi — check the ‘Accommodation & Meals’ section of your specific project page for details. However, remember that Wi-Fi access may be intermittent, so a SIM card is usually your best option to stay online.

Our local coordinators and International Team are also just a call away 24/7. We’ll provide you with UK and in-country emergency numbers, ensuring you or your family can reach us anytime. If you’re having trouble getting in touch with home or your family is struggling to reach you, we’re always here to help pass on messages.

If you ever feel unwell or get injured with PMGY, it’s essential to let our local team know immediately. They’re here to help you arrange any necessary time off your project and ensure you receive the medical attention you need.

Our local team is dedicated to making sure you’re comfortable and cared for, so don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. While they’re always ready to help, it’s essential to communicate your concerns directly — this way, they can provide the best possible support tailored to your situation. Of course, you’re always welcome to contact our International Team, and we’ll be happy to liaise with the local team on your behalf.

While our local team will guide you through accessing medical care or treatment, they cannot cover any medical fees. Having the right travel insurance in place is crucial to cover any expenses. If you need urgent medical help, we strongly suggest contacting your insurance provider as soon as possible to streamline the process.

Occasionally, due to language barriers or cultural differences, project staff, drivers, or other personnel may not fully grasp the seriousness of your concern. If you ever feel your issue isn’t being addressed properly, please contact your Program Manager immediately — they’re there to ensure your needs are met.

Remember to keep your next of kin updated whenever possible. Our International Team stays in regular contact with the local teams, and in case of an incident, we can also let your family or friends know if necessary.

It’s terrific if you’re considering donating to the project you’ll be volunteering at! Often, the best approach is to purchase any items you wish to donate once you’re in the host country. This has a double benefit — it provides valuable support to the local economy and allows you to see first-hand what the project truly needs.

We strongly suggest against donating cash directly to the project. This is because we can’t always ensure where the money may ultimately go. Instead, focusing on tangible donations or discussing specific needs with the local team is a much better way to make an impactful contribution.

If you’re unsure or have any questions about how best to support your placement, feel free to contact our team. We’re here to guide you through the process and help you make the most meaningful contribution possible!

Yes, in many of our destinations, you can upgrade to a private “comfort” room option.

These rooms are designed for those who would prefer more personal space and a quieter environment during their stay. They are especially popular with participants aged 26 and above, or anyone looking for a bit more privacy alongside their volunteer experience.

Comfort room availability does vary by location, so we recommend checking with our team for your chosen destination.

Our teams will always strive to accommodate your dietary requirements to the best of their ability. However, as a volunteer with PMGY, we cannot guarantee that all specific needs will be fully catered for. Sometimes, you may need to purchase alternative ingredients at your own expense.

To ensure a smooth experience, please include any dietary requirements in your application and remind the local team when you arrive. If you have major nutritional concerns, it’s important to raise these with the PMGY International Team before confirming your place on the program.

Your time with PMGY is the perfect opportunity to combine meaningful volunteering with exciting travel adventures! We actively encourage you to explore during your free time. Most of our programs are structured with weekends off, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture or venture further afield to discover more of your host country.

Our local coordinators are always on hand to provide insider tips, suggest weekend getaways, and help you plan any independent travel. Plus, as you volunteer with PMGY, you will meet fellow travellers who are just as eager to explore, making it easy to find some travel buddies with whom to share these adventures!

We’ll keep you updated about any holidays that might impact project availability. You’ll find this information on our holiday dates page in your Volunteer Handbook. However, as is often the case in developing countries, holidays can sometimes be unpredictable or subject to sudden changes.

In these situations, we encourage our volunteers to remain flexible and embrace the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local celebrations and festivities. It’s a fantastic way to experience the culture in a truly authentic way! Rest assured, our local teams will do their best to arrange alternative project work where feasible, ensuring your time with us is meaningful and enjoyable.

Time well spent with some of Sri Lanka’s sweetest four-legged friends 🐶🇱🇰

Dogs are called a man’s best friend for a reason — and our volunteers quickly find that out here!

The Dog Rescue Project works to bring stray dogs off the streets, provide treatment, spay/neuter, and help them recover in a safe space. 🏥🐾

Recently, two of our rescues were adopted by volunteers and are now thriving in their new homes overseas!💛

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕🌍

To celebrate, here’s a look at one of our favourite volunteer experiences in Tanzania — a full coffee adventure in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro! 🏞️🇹🇿

Our volunteers begin the day with a scenic hike to Materuni Waterfalls, followed by a visit to a local coffee plantation.✨

From beating, roasting, crushing, and grinding the beans by hand, to brewing the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted - this experience is as authentic as it gets! And of course, it’s brought to life with a traditional Tanzanian song and dance to add energy and good vibes to every cup. 🎶💃🏽

Top it off with a freshly cooked local meal and breathtaking views, and you’ve got a day to remember!

Tip: Leave room in your bag — you’ll want to bring some beans home! 😉

Your home away from home in India 🇮🇳

This is where your experience in Faridabad is based, where you’ll eat together, relax after your placement, and get to know the people you’ll be sharing the journey with.

It’s more than just a place to stay.

It’s where:

• You start your mornings before heading to your project
• You come back and unwind after a full day
• You share meals, stories, and plenty of laughs
• Strangers quickly start to feel familiar

Having a base like this makes everything easier, especially if it’s your first time travelling somewhere new. ✌️
