Travel Insurance

Importantly, having an appropriate travel insurance policy during your time abroad is essential. Therefore, it is mandatory for all of our international volunteers to be appropriately covered across all of their trip dates. This includes your travel to and from the host country, as well as any onward travel. Although PMGY does everything to ensure your trip is safe, inevitably things can go wrong. Therefore, having a travel insurance policy in place helps you effectively deal with any problems you may encounter during your time away.

We have partnered up with Howden Insurance to create an affordable and comprehensive optional policy. This has been designed with our international volunteers in mind, to cover our participants for all of their travel essentials. The policy is available to anyone across the globe, up to the age of 65 years. The document will cover you for your time on any PMGY destination. Situated along the Douro River and close to Portugal’s stunning Atlantic coastline, Porto combines historic charm with a relaxed lifestyle. Surrounded by beautiful beaches, picturesque towns, and easy access to destinations such as Braga, Aveiro, Gerês National Park, and the Douro Valley, the area offers the perfect balance of cultural immersion, outdoor adventure, and meaningful volunteering opportunities.

PMGY’s volunteer opportunities in Portugal are delivered by our dedicated and highly experienced in-country local team. Every team member is fully vetted by our International Team, ensuring that your experience is both safe and rewarding. Your orientation for your Portugal volunteer program begins after breakfast at the hostel. The morning starts with a one hour orientation session led by our local coordinator in the hostel’s communal chill-out area.

During this session, you’ll receive an introduction to life in Porto, local customs, project expectations, safety information, and practical advice to help you settle in smoothly. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have before beginning your placement.

Following the orientation, you’ll head out for lunch before the local team helps arrange your public transport pass. This pass can be used to travel to and from your project throughout your stay and is also useful for exploring the city during your free time.

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of historic Porto. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the tour introduces you to some of the city’s most famous landmarks, viewpoints, and neighbourhoods, helping you become familiar with the city you’ll be calling home.

Depending on project schedules, placement availability, and the number of volunteer arrivals, the local team will either introduce you to your project and show you the route on Monday afternoon or arrange your first day at the placement for Tuesday. This ensures that everyone is set up properly and has an understanding of their project location, daily commute, and responsibilities before getting started.

Day 1 (Sunday) – Arrival

Welcome to Portugal! A member of our local team will be waiting to greet you at Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport before transferring you to your accommodation in Porto, approximately 30 minutes away.

Once you arrive, the rest of the day is yours to relax after your journey, settle into your accommodation, and begin exploring your new surroundings. Whether you choose to take a stroll through the local neighbourhood, grab a coffee, or simply recover from your travels, this is a great opportunity to ease into Portuguese life before your volunteer experience begins.

Day 2 (Monday) – Orientation

Your orientation for your Portugal volunteer program begins after breakfast at the hostel. The morning starts with a one hour orientation session led by our local coordinator in the hostel’s communal chill-out area.

During this session, you’ll receive an introduction to life in Porto, local customs, project expectations, safety information, and practical advice to help you settle in smoothly. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have before beginning your placement.

Following the orientation, you’ll head out for lunch before the local team helps arrange your public transport pass. This pass can be used to travel to and from your project throughout your stay and is also useful for exploring the city during your free time.

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of historic Porto. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the tour introduces you to some of the city’s most famous landmarks, viewpoints, and neighbourhoods, helping you become familiar with the city you’ll be calling home.

Depending on project schedules, placement availability, and the number of volunteer arrivals, the local team will either introduce you to your project and show you the route on Monday afternoon or arrange your first day at the placement for Tuesday. This ensures that everyone is set up properly and has an understanding of their project location, daily commute, and responsibilities before getting started.

Days 3-6 (Tuesday–Friday) – Volunteering Begins

Your volunteer placement typically begins on Tuesday. Whether you’re supporting childcare initiatives, assisting with community projects, contributing to youth development activities, or helping within animal care settings, this is where you’ll begin making a meaningful contribution to the local community.

While the local coordinator takes a more hands-off approach during the middle of the week, they remain available via WhatsApp should you need any assistance, advice, or support. You’ll never be far away from help if you need it.

Towards the end of the week, the local coordinator will usually arrange a group catch-up in the city. This informal sharing circle provides an opportunity to discuss how your placement is going, share feedback, ask questions, and raise any concerns before heading off for the weekend.

Days 7-8 (Saturday–Sunday) – Weekend Adventures

The weekend is yours to explore the very best of northern Portugal. Whether you’re looking for a cultural city break in Lisbon, a visit to the historic city of Braga, a nature escape in Gerês National Park, a relaxing coastal getaway in Aveiro, or wine tasting in the beautiful Douro Valley, there is something for everyone.

During your volunteer program in Portugal, we encourage you to make the most of your free time and experience as much of the country as possible. Our local team is always happy to provide recommendations and advice for planning weekend trips.

The Following Weeks

For the remainder of your stay, your schedule will follow a similar pattern, with volunteer work taking place Monday through Friday and weekends free for travel and exploration.

Volunteering during the week is expected and forms a core part of the program experience. As you spend more time at your placement, you’ll develop stronger relationships within the community and gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and the impact of your contribution.

Our local team remains available throughout your stay to provide guidance and support. Whether you need help planning a weekend trip, navigating the city, or simply have a question about your placement, we’re always here to help.

Last Day (Saturday) – Departure 

Sadly, your time with PMGY comes to an end on Saturday. If you’re heading home, you can make your way back to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport using public transport, Uber, or other arrangements that suit your travel plans.

We hope you leave Portugal with incredible memories, new friendships, valuable experiences, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a meaningful contribution to the local community.

For many first-time travellers, heading abroad can feel both exciting and daunting. At PMGY, we take every precaution to make our volunteer projects in Portugal as safe as possible. While no experience can ever be 100% risk-free, our robust safety measures provide peace of mind for both volunteers and their families.

Every program has been personally inspected and approved by a PMGY director. We’ve lived in the Volunteer House, experienced the orientation, and worked on the projects ourselves. Through frequent visits and daily communications, we’ve built strong, trusting relationships with our local team, ensuring that all programs meet our high standards.

Pre-Departure and In-Country Guidance

To ensure you’re fully prepared, PMGY provides comprehensive pre-departure guidance and an in-depth safety briefing during your orientation. Our local team cover all the essentials, including project introductions, emergency procedures, tips for using local transport, and cultural differences. Volunteers also receive a full list of important contact numbers, ensuring you always know who to reach out to.

General Safety Tips

While our local team work hard to ensure your safety, we encourage volunteers to follow these general tips for an even more secure experience:

• Be modest with jewellery worn in public.
• Avoid drinking tap water.
• Stay vigilant in crowds or near beggars; distractions may be used to target you.
• Be discreet when handling money in public.
• Plan your journeys carefully, especially at night, and know your destination in advance.
• Use only reputable transport providers; recommendations will be provided during your orientation.
• Stay in groups at night and avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas.
• Keep valuables safe, especially when heading out of the accommodation.
• Be cautious of traffic, always looking left and right before crossing roads.
• Never accept food or drinks from strangers.

By following these guidelines and the advice provided by our in-country teams, you’ll be able to enjoy a safe, enriching, and memorable experience at your volunteer project in Portugal.

Portugal enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm summers, pleasant spring and autumn temperatures, and generally mild winters. In Porto and northern Portugal, summer temperatures typically range between 20°C and 30°C, while humidity levels are much lower than in tropical destinations, making it a comfortable place to volunteer and explore throughout the year.

Due to Portugal’s location on the Atlantic coast, weather conditions can vary between regions. The summer months, from June to September, are the most popular time to visit, bringing long sunny days, warm temperatures, and ideal conditions for enjoying the beaches, outdoor cafés, and weekend trips around the country. Even during the height of summer, Porto often benefits from cooling ocean breezes, making it more comfortable than many southern European destinations.

The winter months, from November to March, are generally cooler and wetter, particularly in northern Portugal. Rain showers are common but are often interspersed with bright, sunny periods. Daytime temperatures in Porto usually remain between 10°C and 18°C, while evenings can feel cooler. Southern regions of Portugal, such as the Algarve, tend to experience warmer and drier conditions throughout the winter months.

Spring and autumn are often considered some of the best times to visit Portugal. Temperatures are comfortable, tourist numbers are lower, and the countryside is particularly beautiful. Whether you’re exploring Porto’s historic streets, visiting the Douro Valley vineyards, relaxing on the beaches near Aveiro, or hiking in Gerês National Park, these seasons provide excellent conditions for both volunteering and travel.

Overall, Portugal is a fantastic destination to visit year round. Each season offers something different, from sunny beach days and vibrant city life in summer to quieter cultural experiences and scenic countryside escapes during the cooler months.

Accommodation – Hostel

During your time on the Portugal volunteer program, you will stay in a centrally located hostel in Porto. The accommodation is situated approximately a 10 minute walk from the city centre, providing easy access to shops, restaurants, supermarkets, public transport, and many of Porto’s main attractions.

The hostel offers a social and welcoming environment where participants completing volunteer work in Portugal can connect with fellow travellers and volunteers from around the world. Sharing accommodation with other guests provides an excellent opportunity to make new friends, exchange experiences, and enjoy Porto’s vibrant atmosphere during your free time. Accommodation is provided in mixed or female-only dormitory-style rooms, depending on availability and preferences. Rooms typically accommodate between 4 and 12 guests and feature bunk beds, air conditioning, individual lockers, mirrors, and access to shared en suite bathroom facilities. Individual lockers are available for storing valuables, although a small refundable deposit is usually required for the locker key.

The hostel is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, with bathrooms cleaned daily and communal areas regularly serviced by staff. Participants are encouraged to keep their personal belongings secure in their designated lockers and maintain shared spaces respectfully throughout their stay. Bed linen is provided, although volunteers should bring their own towel or arrange a rental locally if required. Washing machines and drying machines are available for an additional charge. The hostel includes several communal spaces where volunteers can relax, socialise, or plan weekend travel.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, allowing volunteers to stay connected with friends and family during their placement. Additional facilities include a shared kitchen and breakfast area, luggage storage, access to safe drinking water, and 24-hour secure access for registered guests.

The hostel reception area is typically staffed daily from 7am to 1pm and can assist with general enquiries, local recommendations, and accommodation support. Outside of reception hours, guests continue to have secure access to the property. CCTV operates in communal areas of the hostel to help maintain a safe and secure environment for guests. A member of the local team who stays off-site is available throughout your placement and will assist with check-in procedures, orientation, and any accommodation-related questions that may arise during your stay.

The hostel is located within easy reach of Porto’s metro network, making it convenient to travel between the accommodation, project placements, and Porto Airport. Many volunteer placements can be reached by a combination of walking and public transport, with the local team providing guidance on routes during orientation. Accommodation is arranged to provide a safe, comfortable, and sociable base while you volunteer in Portugal. While the facilities are simple rather than luxurious, they offer everything needed for a comfortable stay and allow volunteers to experience authentic city life while participating in their Portugal volunteer program.

Meals

During your volunteer trip to Portugal, you will receive three meals per day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meal arrangement is designed to provide flexibility around your project schedule while allowing you to enjoy a variety of food options throughout your stay.

Breakfast is served at the hostel each morning and is available on a self-service basis, allowing volunteers to help themselves before heading out for the day. Lunch and dinner are provided through a local café located approximately five minutes’ walk from the hostel, which regularly welcomes volunteers participating in the program.

Lunch and dinner are selected from a set menu, with a good variety of options available throughout the week. Meals can be enjoyed individually or alongside other volunteers, creating a relaxed atmosphere outside of project hours. For added flexibility, packed lunch options may also be available at the café for volunteers who are heading out for the day, travelling, or working around a busy project schedule.

Please note any dietary requirements in your application and re-iterate them to the local team on arrival. Here’s an example of the meals you can expect:

Breakfast – Toast, Cakes, Fruit, Tea/Coffee

Lunch – Mixed Rice, Vegetables, Curries, Salad

Dinner – Fried Rice, Fried Chicken, Noodles, Spaghetti

On the Portugal volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Most placements are located within Porto and can typically be reached by a short walk and a metro journey from the accommodation. On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to your project, introduce you to the staff, and ensure you are comfortable navigating the route independently for the remainder of your placement.

PMGY welcomes volunteers of all nationalities and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, and there is no upper age limit. All volunteers need to have a good level of English, although it does not need to be your first language. 

All participants must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering abroad with us. No formal experience or qualifications are required—just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to prepare!

To confirm your place on a PMGY program, you need to pay a Registration Fee. The remaining Program Fee is due no less than 60 days before your program start date.
