In 2000, Rafael Correa took office and began implementing major reforms, even amidst ongoing crises. Pablo Arturo Suarez Hospital – PMGY’s medical volunteer program in Ecuador places participants in Pablo Arturo Suarez Hospital, a government hospital located in the north of Quito, near the former Mariscal Sucre airport. Inaugurated in 1951, the hospital was named in honour of Pablo Arturo Suarez, a respected medical professional and public health advocate. Today, it serves primarily low-income families and plays an important role in providing accessible healthcare to the local community. Volunteers may have the opportunity to rotate through different medicine wards, depending on hospital needs and their level of Spanish. Examples include:

Internal Medicine (specialty departments), Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Occupational Therapy, Trauma, Out-Patient Services, Surgery Consult Department.

The hospital welcomes university students, school leavers, and volunteers without prior medical education. PMGY Spanish School

Founded in 1994, the PMGY Spanish school in Ecuador is one of the oldest and most successful in the region. Renowned for its professional and experienced teachers and staff, the school confidently positions itself as the best place to learn Spanish in Ecuador.

Over the years, the school has developed a strong team dedicated to delivering a personalised Spanish learning experience. From day one, you’ll feel right at home. Whether you’re in a group of up to five students or learning independently, your lessons will be tailored to your Spanish level and taught in a welcoming classroom setting.

Learning extends beyond the classroom. You’ll venture into Quito to explore markets, museums, and popular local spots, gaining confidence in speaking with native speakers. This immersive experience not only strengthens your communication skills but also gives you a glimpse of Ecuadorian life beyond what tourists typically see, making it an ideal choice for anyone joining an Ecuador learn Spanish and volunteer program.

Spanish lessons take place in the mornings for approximately four hours. In the afternoons and evenings, the local team organises optional cultural activities to enhance your experience. Your level will be determined by a simple and informal placement test – usually a verbal Q&A with your teacher at the start of the program. There’s no need to worry; it’s a relaxed and straightforward process!

Your Role & Typical Study Day

This program is focused entirely on learning Spanish, with no formal volunteering involved. Some activities are free of charge, while others may involve small costs to cover materials, logistics, or entrance fees. Conveniently, the Spanish school is located just a short 10-minute walk from the host family, making it easy for participants to attend both classes and activities.

Flights

After confirming your place on a PMGY volunteer program, we strongly advise that you book your flights as early as possible. This will help ensure that you get the lowest airfare. You can choose to book your flights independently or we can help you with arranging them.

To join our Ecuador volunteer program, you should book your flights to Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito on the Sunday start date. The airport code is UIO. Volunteers in Ecuador can arrive at any time on their designated Sunday start date.

Travel Insurance

Importantly, having an appropriate travel insurance policy during your time abroad is essential. Therefore, it is mandatory for all of our international volunteers to be appropriately covered across all of their trip dates. This includes your travel to and from the host country, as well as any onward travel. Although PMGY does everything to ensure your trip is safe, inevitably things can go wrong. Therefore, having a travel insurance policy in place helps you effectively deal with any problems you may encounter during your time away.

We have partnered up with Howden Insurance to create an affordable and comprehensive optional policy. This has been designed with our international volunteers in mind, to cover our participants for all of their travel essentials. The policy is available to anyone across the globe, up to the age of 65 years. The document will cover you for your time on any PMGY destination. You can purchase PMGY Travel Insurance during your online application or you can contact us directly to arrange it.

Our International Team works tirelessly to provide extensive support leading up to your volunteer or gap year trip. From our online chat service to email support and telephone conversations, we’re always ready to assist. All international volunteers with PMGY receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, which serves as your ultimate guide for planning your volunteer trip abroad. This detailed handbook includes everything from visa guidance to suggested packing lists, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your adventure.

This will help you familiarise yourself with the city and key locations such as the local supermarket, cafes, restaurants, ATMs, and currency exchange spots. In the evening, you’ll meet the program director, so make sure you have your passport and proof of insurance ready, as the team will need to make copies.

The director will provide more insight into Ecuadorian culture, emergency contacts, and the foundations of your program. You will also learn about local cultural activities that you may want to take part in during your free time. The rest of the evening is yours to relax, catch up on sleep, and get to know your fellow volunteers!

Day 1 (Sunday) Arrival

Welcome to Ecuador! A member of our local team will be waiting for you at the airport, holding a name sign. The journey to your accommodation will take around 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive, you’ll have time to settle in, relax, and meet your fellow volunteers.

Please note that the local team does not work on Sundays, so your arrival will be a more independent experience. The accommodation is set up for independent living, so you should withdraw or exchange a small amount of money at the airport to buy any food or supplies you may need for the evening. Supermarkets and food outlets are within walking distance, and you can ask your driver for directions. If you have opted for the local meal package, your host family will provide food if you arrive during a mealtime.

Day 2 (Monday) Orientation

Days 3-6 (Tuesday-Friday) Volunteering Begins

Your volunteer work in Ecuador begins on Tuesday morning. If you need support, our local team is always just a phone call away. You will also see Ecuador coordinators at the Spanish school, which is located close to your accommodation.

To help you settle in, the local team will guide you through the routes to and from your project, which typically involves public transport. You’ll also be introduced to the local project staff, who will be your main points of contact during your placement.

Throughout the week, there are optional afternoon and evening activities available. You can join salsa classes, Ecuadorian cooking sessions, trips to nearby mountains, or cocktail-making workshops. Many of these activities take place at the Spanish school and are free to join, while others require a small fee to cover transport, entrance fees, or materials. Some activities require a minimum number of participants, so it’s best to sign up early.

These activities are a fantastic way to connect with fellow volunteers, immerse yourself in Ecuadorian culture, and practise your Spanish in a fun and engaging way.

Days 7-8 (Saturday-Sunday) Weekend

After a rewarding week of volunteering, the weekend is your time to explore Ecuador’s incredible sights. Whether you prefer relaxing on the beach, hiking through the Amazon, visiting the Galapagos Islands, or immersing yourself in local culture, Ecuador has something for everyone.

The local team is happy to help you plan your weekend adventures, providing travel advice and recommendations to make the most of your time on your volunteer experience in Ecuador.

The Following Weeks

If you are staying longer, your next weeks will follow a similar schedule, with volunteering from Monday to Friday and weekends free for travel. Time will fly by, so be sure to embrace every opportunity!

The local team is available throughout your stay to support you with anything you need – whether it’s help planning weekend trips, replacing a lost phone, or just having a chat.

Last Day (Saturday)

Saturday marks the end of your Ecuador volunteer experience. If you are heading home, the local team will assist in arranging your return airport transfer. This is included in your Program Fee, so be sure to coordinate with the Spanish school team to confirm your travel plans.

While no experience can ever be 100% risk-free, our robust safety measures provide peace of mind for both volunteers and their families.

Every program has been personally inspected and approved by a PMGY director. We’ve lived in the host family, experienced the orientation, and worked on the projects ourselves. Through frequent visits and daily communications, we’ve built strong, trusting relationships with our local team, ensuring that all programs meet our high standards.

Pre-Departure and In-Country Guidance

To ensure you’re fully prepared, PMGY provides comprehensive pre-departure guidance and an in-depth safety briefing during your orientation. Our local team cover all the essentials, including project introductions, emergency procedures, tips for using local transport, and cultural differences. Volunteers also receive a full list of important contact numbers, ensuring you always know who to reach out to.

General Safety Tips

While our local team work hard to ensure your safety, we encourage volunteers to follow these general tips for an even more secure experience:

• Be modest with jewellery worn in public.
• Avoid drinking tap water.
• Stay vigilant in crowds or near beggars; distractions may be used to target you.
• Be discreet when handling money in public.
• Plan your journeys carefully, especially at night, and know your destination in advance.
• Use only reputable transport providers; recommendations will be provided during your orientation.
• Stay in groups at night and avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas.
• Keep valuables safe, especially when heading out of the accommodation.
• Be cautious of traffic, always looking left and right before crossing roads.
• Never accept food or drinks from strangers.

By following these guidelines and the advice provided by our in-country teams, you’ll be able to enjoy a safe, enriching, and memorable experience at your volunteer project in Ecuador.

Ecuador may be a small country, but its climate is surprisingly diverse! This is largely due to its varying altitudes, which create distinct weather patterns across different regions. While the general climate follows a predictable pattern, conditions can change dramatically from year to year, especially with the impact of global warming.

The country’s climate varies depending on the region. Along the coast, temperatures are typically warm, averaging around 25°C, with high humidity. In the mountainous areas, the air is drier, and temperatures remain mild throughout the year. If you venture into the Amazon, expect high humidity, frequent rainfall, and temperatures around 28°C.

Ecuador’s position on the equator means that temperatures and daylight hours remain fairly consistent year-round. In Quito, located in the northern highlands, the weather can be quite unpredictable! Mornings are often sunny and clear, making it comfortable to wear a T-shirt and jeans. However, afternoons can quickly turn cloudy and breezy, leaving you wishing for a scarf or jacket. The best approach is to carry a day-pack so you’re always prepared for sun, wind, or rain.

Despite the changing conditions, Quito enjoys plenty of beautiful days, offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains. Due to its proximity to the equator, the sun’s rays are particularly strong. Whether it’s raining or shining, it’s essential to apply sunscreen (SPF 20+ or higher) to protect your skin from the intense UV exposure.

Accommodation – Homestay

During your time on the Ecuador volunteer programs, you’ll stay with a local host family in Quito. The accommodation is basic but comfortable, offering you the chance to fully immerse yourself in Ecuadorian culture while living in the city. Your host family will guide you during your time in Quito and help you improve your Spanish skills. However, please note that most host families may only speak a basic level of English.

Host families are located in or just outside central Quito, and all are within a 30-minute bus journey from your volunteer work in Ecuador. Rooms are shared with up to three participants of the same gender, and each room includes single beds, bed linen, and cupboard space for storing clothes and personal items.

Bathrooms are shared and equipped with western-style toilets and showers. The homestay has Wi-Fi and a communal area where participants can relax and spend time with their host families. There’s also a kitchen with a refrigerator for storing chilled items; however, it’s polite to ask your host family for fridge space in advance.

While host families usually have their own private living areas, they are always keen to interact with volunteers. They love hearing about your experiences in Ecuador and sharing stories about their own lives. This setup ensures you’ll have round-the-clock support and security while also offering a wonderful opportunity to improve your Spanish.

Your host family’s location is linked to your volunteer in Ecuador project, making logistics easier for your daily commute. If you’d like to be placed in the same accommodation as another PMGY participant, please mention this on your online application.

Meals

During your volunteer trip to Ecuador, meals are not included in your Program Fee. However, you can opt for a popular meal plan at 80 USD per week, which covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, freshly prepared by your host family (Monday–Sunday). Meals typically consist of traditional Ecuadorian dishes, with vegetarian options always available. Payment for the meal plan is made locally upon your arrival, covering the full duration of your stay.

Please note this is a one-time cost, and meals cannot be arranged on a “per meal basis.” Snacks and drinks outside of meal times are not included.

If you prefer to prepare your own meals, the homestay provides a fully equipped kitchen with all necessary appliances. You’ll need to purchase your own ingredients for cooking. However, this option tends to be less popular as it’s often more expensive and requires additional effort to prepare individual meals.

The homestay is situated in a vibrant area with access to both small food markets and larger convenience stores. If you have questions about using the kitchen or finding local ingredients, the host family or local team will be happy to assist.

On the Ecuador volunteer program, the cost of your project transport is not included in your Program Fee. Most volunteers will use local buses, with the bus stop located near your host family. The local team will ensure you are comfortable with the routes, so you can easily manage the commute to and from your project.

PMGY welcomes volunteers of all nationalities and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, and there is no upper age limit. All volunteers need to have a good level of English, although it does not need to be your first language. You do not need to speak the local language; however, learning a few words during your time with us will go a long way and greatly enrich your experience!

For volunteers in South America, we recommend speaking a reasonable level of Spanish before your trip. While there are no specific language requirements to join the program and beginners are welcome, the ability to speak Spanish—and a passion for learning more—will significantly enhance your experience. English is generally not widely spoken, so our programs in South America should be viewed as broader language immersion experiences. If you do not speak Spanish, you may find it challenging to communicate, which could lead to frustration. We strongly encourage participants to prepare for this aspect of their trip.

All participants must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering abroad with us. No formal experience or qualifications are required—just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to prepare!

To confirm your place on a PMGY program, you need to pay a Registration Fee. The remaining Program Fee is due no less than 60 days before your program start date.
