During the first two weeks of the Vietnam Experience, you will stay in Hanoi with other participants on the Vietnam volunteer program. The city blends tradition and modern life, offering quiet neighbourhoods filled with family-owned shops, tree-lined streets, and local markets. Away from the busy tourist areas, you will have the chance to see how people live day to day. Temples, lakes, and community gatherings create a calm and welcoming setting, giving you a genuine sense of Hanoi as the locals know it.

Please make sure you arrive at Noi Bai International Airport (HAN is the airport code) in Hanoi on your selected start date.
Welcome to Vietnam! You will be met at Noi Bai International Airport by a driver from our local team, holding a sign with your name on it. From there, you will be taken straight to the Volunteer House where you can relax and meet your fellow volunteers. You will also receive your locker key and house key.
If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, one of our local coordinators will take you on a neighbourhood tour, helping you get familiar with the area. If you arrive later in the day, you will have the chance to explore on Thursday instead.
Once you have settled in, the rest of the day is yours to relax and start getting to know the other participants.

Your orientation will take place on Thursday, giving you an important introduction to your volunteer project in Vietnam. The session will cover all the theoretical aspects of your experience, including an insight into the program, Vietnamese history, culture, and language. The team will also go through essential safety protocols, provide important staff contact details, and offer guidance on staying safe during your free time.
Throughout the day, you will meet various coordinators who will lead different parts of your induction, helping you feel prepared and confident in your new environment. The session will also provide a detailed overview of your volunteer project, with useful tips for your placement. The team will guide you on how to handle potentially challenging situations and ensure you feel fully supported.
The day will finish with a fun and interactive Vietnamese language lesson, where you can pick up some key phrases to use throughout your stay.
On Friday, our local coordinators will take you on a guided tour of Hanoi, allowing you to explore the city’s historic landmarks and vibrant culture.
You may visit iconic sites such as the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu), where you will learn about the philosophy of Confucius, a key influence on Vietnamese culture. Alternatively, you might explore the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which showcases the country’s 54 recognised ethnic groups.
Another possible stop is Hoa Lo Prison, famously used for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. You will also get a chance to walk through Hanoi’s Old Quarter and take in the stunning views at Hoan Kiem Lake, a cultural and social focal point in the city.
During the tour, our team will also teach you how to navigate the public transport system, ensuring you feel comfortable getting around on your own.

Your project coordinator will take you to your volunteer project, introduce you to the local staff, and ensure you have a clear understanding of your role. This first day is an opportunity to observe, ask questions, and familiarise yourself with the project environment.
As the week progresses, you will settle into a daily routine, grow in confidence, and start making a real impact. If you need anything at the project, remember that our local team is always just a phone call away. You will also regularly see our Vietnam coordinators at the Volunteer House, where they are always happy to assist you.
You will also have another free weekend during this period, giving you time to relax and explore at your own pace. You may choose to stay locally in Hanoi and enjoy the cafés, markets, and cultural sights, or book an optional tour if you would like to add more adventure to your experience. A popular option is travelling north to the mountain region of Sapa, known for its breathtaking scenery, rice terraces, and traditional hill tribe villages. Meals will continue to be included when staying on site at the Volunteer House during this time.

It’s an early start as we leave the city behind and head into the peaceful countryside of Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The scenic drive winds past emerald rice paddies, limestone peaks, and small rural villages that offer a glimpse into authentic Vietnamese life.
Upon arrival, settle into a traditional Tai Dam homestay, where you’ll share a charming multi-bed stilt house with fellow travellers. Other Things to Consider on the Real Vietnam Experience
Itinerary Schedule – The itineraries for our PMGY experience trips are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we strive to inform participants of any changes ahead of the program start date, daily activities during your time in-country may still be subject to last-minute adjustments.
Accommodation – All your accommodation is arranged by PMGY throughout your Real Vietnam Experience. During your journey, you'll stay in a mix of hostels, hotels, and traditional homestays, sharing rooms with fellow travellers. All rooms will be single-gender and include air conditioning and modern, western-style bathrooms where available. Wi-Fi is typically provided, though it may be limited in some rural areas such as Pu Luong.
Our team will do their best to arrange twin rooms or single beds wherever possible. However, in certain locations, particularly during the homestay or volunteer experience, shared sleeping arrangements or multi-bed rooms may be part of the local setup. Each accommodation is chosen for its comfort, cleanliness, and authentic atmosphere, ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable place to rest throughout your Vietnam adventure.
Arrival and Departure Airport Differ - It’s very important to note that your arrival flight will need to land into Hanoi Airport (HAN), while your departure flight should depart from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) as your itinerary starts in Hanoi and ends in Ho Chi Minh City.
Volunteering First - Unlike other Real Experience Trips, in Vietnam, your volunteer experience takes place first, with the travel elements taking place in the latter half of the trip. Please refer to the trip schedule when planning your free weekends in Hanoi, so you can make the most of your time and avoid repeating destinations already included in your onward travel itinerary.

Volunteer House
For the first two weeks of your Real Vietnam Experience, you will stay in our Volunteer House in a quiet and friendly neighbourhood of Hanoi. The house provides a comfortable and social base where you will live alongside other international volunteers while completing your chosen volunteer project. Restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs are within walking distance, while Hanoi’s Old Quarter can be reached in around 45 minutes by public bus.
Accommodation is provided in single sex dormitory rooms with up to 8 people, making it easy to get to know the other volunteers you will be sharing the experience with. Rooms have air conditioning and bed linen is provided. Shared bathrooms feature Western style toilets and showers, with several facilities available throughout the house. There is also space for storing clothes and personal belongings.
The Volunteer House includes communal areas where you can relax and socialise outside of your project hours, with WiFi available in parts of the house. This provides a friendly group environment while giving you the opportunity to experience everyday life in Hanoi during the volunteering part of your Real Vietnam Experience.
Travelling
All your accommodation is arranged by PMGY throughout the travel element of your Real Vietnam Experience, giving you a comfortable and social base as you travel around Vietnam. During your journey, you will stay in a mix of hostels, hotels and traditional homestays, sharing accommodation with fellow travellers. Rooms are single gender and generally include air conditioning and modern Western style bathroom facilities. WiFi is typically available, although connectivity may be more limited in rural locations such as Pu Luong.
Where possible, our team will arrange twin rooms or individual beds for participants. In some locations, particularly during the traditional homestay experience, shared sleeping spaces or rooms with multiple beds form part of the local experience. This provides a great opportunity to experience a more authentic side of Vietnam while travelling as part of a social group.

Volunteering (First 2 weeks) - During your volunteer trip to Vietnam, you will be provided with three meals a day, except on Saturdays when meals are not served. Meals are traditional Vietnamese dishes, with rice being a staple. All meals are freshly cooked and nutritious, with free drinking water available 24/7.
For breakfast, you can expect options like fruit, toast, and tea or coffee. Lunch is usually provided at the project if the travel time prevents volunteers from returning to the Volunteer House. In such cases, the local team will reimburse up to 40,000 VND for meals purchased at nearby cafes. When taken at the Volunteer House, lunch typically includes soup, rice, vegetables, and sometimes meat or fish.
Dinner is served at the Volunteer House in the early evening, often buffet-style, and typically includes a variety of dishes to suit everyone’s tastes. Meals generally consist of pork, fish, beef, or chicken, as well as tofu or egg, vegetables, rice, and soup. On occasion, a western dish will be served, which is always a favourite among volunteers. It’s recommended to eat promptly when meals are ready, as food cools quickly.
Travelling - Some meals are included in the Program Fee – please refer to the itinerary section for specific details. Dining out in Vietnam is both affordable and delicious, with local cuisine celebrated for its balance of flavours and fresh ingredients. Our local team will happily recommend their favourite spots and must-try dishes throughout your journey.

Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed the moment you land. From there, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation in Hanoi, where you can relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Tuesday of your final week in Ho Chi Minh City, where your flight should depart from. You will need to check out of the accommodation on this day to make space for new participants arriving for their own adventure. Our local team will be available to help arrange transport to the airport or provide guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

A member of our International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program to ensure it meets our high standards. We also stay up to date with the latest travel advice from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Through constant communication with our local teams, we make sure participants are always placed in safe, stable regions.
Our International Team has personally visited and participated in every program we offer, paying close attention to every detail from accommodation and local neighbourhoods to food and transport. These meticulous checks ensure that all aspects of your stay meet our rigorous standards. In addition, our local teams in Vietnam are experienced professionals with years of expertise in hosting international travellers. They act as PMGY’s trusted representatives, offering 24/7 support throughout your time on the program. To further enhance safety, PMGY provides a 24-hour international emergency line, and our in-country staff maintain strong connections with local medical professionals to ensure immediate assistance is available whenever needed.
Before your journey begins, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook covering key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. PMGY also hosts monthly Introductory and Safety Webinars, which provide valuable information about our programs and practical tips for staying safe while abroad.
Upon arrival in Vietnam, you’ll take part in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover general program information, destination-specific safety advice, and guidance on cultural expectations. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card, something we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. You’ll also receive a list of essential contact numbers to keep handy throughout your stay.
