Despite being a vast country, the best spots are all within short travel distances, meaning you can make the most of your experience. Your time in Tanzania will be spent savouring its beauty rather than in transit. Prepare for stunning volcanic mountains, picturesque beaches, and lush greenery at every turn.
Your journey begins when you land in Stone Town, the historic coastal town of Zanzibar. From there, you will be taken to our accommodation in Paje, an upcoming tourist coastal town with pristine white beaches and clear waters. The highlight for many is the next four days of exploring this exotic and tranquil island, where crystal-clear waters, wild turtles and pods of dolphins create a true island paradise. From there, you’ll head over to Tanzania by a short domestic flight, not included with your Program Fee, ready for the Tanzanian part of the adventure!
This part of the adventure starts with a tour of the city of Arusha. You’ll visit bustling markets and bargain for local handicrafts, explore Africa’s largest art gallery and enjoy putting some of your own craft skills to the test whilst visiting a local enterprise. After settling into life on the mainland, you’ll head out to explore Materuni Waterfalls, a towering natural wonder in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. The days that follow will be on a world class safari through three of Tanzania’s famous national parks, you will also learn about and experience life amongst a local tribe and head back into the water at Lake Duluti for scenic kayaking.
Your group will travel together by minibus, visiting Tanzania’s most famous destinations and hidden treasures. Accompanied by an English-speaking guide, you’ll gain deep insights into Tanzania’s culture and history throughout your adventure.
During the final segment of the Real Tanzania Experience, you’ll stay in Arusha with other participants on the Tanzania volunteer program. Arusha is a large city, filled back to back with welcoming communities grateful for your help. With a small number of other tourists, the town offers an authentic glimpse into local life. The children of the community will welcome you with open arms and fill any possible free time with football and games in the street.
Volunteer Placement
PMGY’s Tanzania volunteer program runs year-round, meaning you’ll be working alongside existing PMGY volunteers. During the volunteer segment of your Real Tanzania Experience, you’ll have the chance to join one of our community-based projects, either teaching English, medical volunteers or supporting our childcare projects.
By choosing to volunteer in Tanzania, you’ll immerse yourself in local life, spending time within the community and gaining first-hand insight into what life is like for the Tanzanian people. Your involvement in these projects ensures you’ll leave a positive impact during the Real Tanzania Experience.
One of the most unforgettable aspects of Tanzania is its vibrant atmosphere and energising culture. Combined with the warm and genuine hospitality of the local people, who are eager to welcome you and share their way of life, this experience promises to be truly enriching.
Your volunteer abroad program run from Monday-Thursday with Friday being optional but encouraged. Your volunteer session will generally run from 8:30am to 1pm. You will make your way to the project via tuk tuk or private bus, which in general will take no more than 25 minutes.

Standard Itinerary
Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on your chosen Sunday start date to begin your island adventure.
A friendly member of our local team will be waiting with a PMGY sign displaying your name. From the airport, it’s about an hour’s drive to our accommodation in Paje, a charming coastal village known for its laid-back vibe and pristine beach.
Spend the rest of the day settling in, exploring the surroundings, or relaxing on the sand as you get ready to meet your new travel companions.
After breakfast, your PMGY guide will host a welcome orientation, introducing you to the island, its culture, and everything you can expect from the week ahead.
We’ll then make our way to Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historical heart. Wander its winding alleyways, visit bustling markets, and uncover stories of the island’s spice trade and cultural heritage.
As the day winds down, return to Paje to relax with a drink in hand, watch the sunset, and enjoy your first full evening in paradise.
Today is all about soaking up coastal life. Spend the morning visiting one of the many beach clubs in Paje or Jambiani, browsing Masai market stalls, or simply walking the long stretch of soft white sand.
For those seeking adventure, Paje is one of the world’s top destinations for kite surfing, with friendly local instructors ready to help you try it out. In the afternoon, we’ll travel to Michamvi, the only spot on the east coast where you can watch the sunset, and enjoy an exciting traditional acrobatic show.
Set sail for a day of snorkelling in Zanzibar’s clear blue waters. We’ll visit several incredible spots where you might encounter colourful coral, sea turtles, and playful dolphins.
Between swims, unwind on sandbanks surrounded by turquoise water, snack on fresh tropical fruit, and soak up the sun on the deck.
It’s an early start as we journey north to Nungwi, one of Zanzibar’s most famous coastal towns. Known for its crystal-clear water, natural turtle coves, and lively beach atmosphere, Nungwi offers the perfect mix of relaxation and fun.
Spend your morning exploring the shoreline or, for the adventurous, take to the skies with a skydive.
In the evening, enjoy an early dinner before boarding a traditional dhow boat for a sunset cruise filled with African drumming, dancing, and spectacular ocean views. Later, return to Paje to rest and prepare for the next leg of your journey.
After one last morning in Zanzibar, we’ll take a short flight to Arusha to continue the adventure on the mainland.
Settle into your new accommodation, meet the rest of the group, and enjoy the sunset over the distant hills. After dinner, relax under the stars at Maisha Horizon and get ready for the days ahead.
Spend the day exploring the colourful and energetic city of Arusha. Visit the largest Masai handicraft market, sip freshly brewed Kilimanjaro coffee, and admire African art at the continent’s largest gallery.
You’ll also visit a local social enterprise supporting people with disabilities, where you can try your hand at crafting your own souvenirs. Expect warm smiles, laughter, and perhaps a few monkeys joining you along the way.
Today we venture to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro for a scenic hike to the breathtaking Materuni Waterfalls. Pass through lush villages, meet local farmers, and if the weather is clear, catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s peak.
Feel the cool spray of the falls before you even see them, and take a refreshing swim if you’re feeling brave. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional home-cooked lunch and learn how to prepare your own coffee, from roasting to grinding fresh Arabica beans by hand.
The highlight of your trip begins as we set off on a world-class safari through Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park.
Travel in spacious jeeps with expert guides, each with open-top roofs, charging points, and window seats for everyone. Along the way, enjoy freshly prepared meals, comfortable glamping-style accommodation, and countless opportunities to spot Africa’s Big Five.
Each park offers a different landscape and wildlife experience, ensuring every day brings something new. You’ll return to Arusha on Wednesday evening for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Please note that it is required to tip your guide and chef for the safari at the end of the three days. The tips will cost 25 USD per day for the guide and 15 USD per day for the chef. This is paid altogether on Wednesday evening and split between the participants in each jeep.
Just a short drive from Arusha lies Lake Duluti, a peaceful volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush greenery. Spend the day kayaking, cycling through nature trails, and enjoying the calm, reflective atmosphere of this hidden gem.
After two weeks of excitement, it’s time to unwind at the natural Chemka Hot Springs near Kilimanjaro. Swim in crystal-clear water, swing into the lagoon, float on river tubes, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
We’ll spend the whole day here relaxing, enjoying the sunshine, and sampling delicious traditional dishes for lunch.
Our final excursion takes us to a traditional Masai village, home to one of Tanzania’s most iconic tribes. You’ll be welcomed with songs and dances, explore the village, and step inside a traditional home to learn about their unique way of life.
After an inspiring morning, return to Arusha for your last evening together, whether it’s around the campfire at the house or watching the sunset from the Gran Melia Hotel.
Say goodbye to those completing the Intro Experience program and prepare for your next one or two weeks of volunteering. The team will provide a short orientation to guide you through your upcoming placement, leaving you the rest of the day to relax, recharge, and reflect on an unforgettable journey.
Monday marks the start of your volunteer placement. After breakfast at the Volunteer House, coordinators will accompany you to your project site, introduce you to the local staff, and help you settle into your role.
Whether you’re supporting a childcare, teaching, or medical placement, each project provides a rewarding opportunity to immerse yourself in the local community while developing new skills in an international environment. Childcare volunteers help deliver educational activities, creative play sessions, and English lessons to young children. Teaching volunteers support local schools by helping students improve their English language skills through engaging classroom activities. Medical volunteers gain valuable insight into healthcare delivery by observing experienced professionals in community clinics and hospitals, with opportunities to assist with non-clinical tasks under supervision where appropriate. Throughout your placement, local coordinators will provide guidance and support to ensure you have a meaningful and rewarding experience.
You’ll receive two meals each day at the Volunteer House, breakfast and dinner, with lunch available from nearby cafés or prepared independently using the house facilities. Evenings often include optional cultural and social activities such as bonfires, cooking classes, and visits to Arusha, with some activities requiring a small additional fee.
If you are completing our 3 Week Real Tanzania Experience, you’ll enjoy one final free day on Saturday to make the most of your time in Arusha before departing on Sunday. Whether you choose to pick up some last-minute souvenirs, visit the local markets, relax in one of Arusha’s cafés, take an optional day trip, or simply spend time with your fellow volunteers, this free day gives you the flexibility to experience more of Tanzania at your own pace before your journey home.
If you are continuing on our 4 Week Real Tanzania Experience, you’ll enjoy a full weekend to relax, explore Arusha and the surrounding area, or join one of the optional activities available locally before returning to your volunteer placement on Monday. This free time offers the perfect opportunity to discover more of northern Tanzania. Breakfast and dinner will continue to be provided at the Volunteer House during this period.
Your final week follows the same Monday to Friday volunteering schedule as the previous week, allowing you to continue building relationships within your project and contribute further to the local community. By now, you’ll be familiar with your placement and able to take a more active role in daily activities, making this a rewarding way to round off your time in Tanzania before departing.
Take some time to reflect on your experience, enjoy some final sightseeing around Arusha, pick up any last-minute souvenirs, or simply relax before your departure or onward travels.
Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye as your Real Tanzania Experience comes to an end. If you’re flying home, our team can help arrange your airport transfer (not included in the Program Fee). If you’re continuing your travels, we can assist in organising your next steps.

Other Things to Consider on the Real Tanzania Experience
Return Airport Transfer – Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you’re in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you’re travelling with fellow trip participants.
Arrival and Departure Airport Differ - It's very important to note that your arrival flight will need to land at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ), while your departure flight should depart from Kilimanjaro (JRO) as your itinerary starts in Zanzibar and ends in Arusha.
Domestic Flight Not Included - Please note your domestic flight from Zanzibar-Kilimanjaro or Arusha is not included and you should budget extra for this.
Itinerary Schedule – The itineraries for our PMGY experience trips are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we strive to inform participants of any changes ahead of the program start date, daily activities during your time in-country may still be subject to last-minute adjustments.

Volunteering Experience – The Real Tanzania Experience offers two distinct phases: the first two weeks of exploring Tanzania’s incredible sites and the latter one or two weeks volunteering in the local city of Arusha. In Arusha, the pace of life slows as you immerse yourself in the relaxed ‘pole pole’ lifestyle of a traditional Tanzanian team. You have more time to move independently around the city and decide on some of your own activities for the day. Arusha is a conservative town with a deeply rooted traditional culture. We ask all participants to respect local customs and adhere to their cultural norms during their stay.
Mandatory ZIC Insurance - If you are travelling to or arriving in Zanzibar, please note it is mandatory to take out separate insurance for this visit via the island’s insurance provider - the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), for the duration of your stay. You can purchase insurance for the duration required on their website. Please note this must be done before travelling to Zanzibar. Otherwise, you may be denied entry.
Mount Kilimanjaro Extension – If you're looking to make the most of your time in Tanzania, we recommend budgeting an additional week after your Tanzania Experience to take on the unforgettable challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This optional extension is arranged locally by our team in Tanzania, subject to availability and a local payment made once you are in Tanzania. They will assist with organising all logistics, including experienced mountain guides, park permits, accommodation, meals, transport, and safety support throughout the trek.
The trek usually follows the scenic 7 Day Machame Route, taking you from lush rainforest to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, with excellent acclimatisation along the way. If you choose to take part, you'll need to pack suitable clothing and equipment for high-altitude conditions, including warm layered clothing, waterproofs, sturdy hiking boots, and other trekking essentials. While some equipment can be hired or purchased in Arusha, availability and quality cannot be guaranteed, so we strongly recommend arriving in Tanzania with everything you need. Please also ensure your travel insurance specifically covers high-altitude trekking to 5,895 metres, as many standard policies exclude it.

All accommodation is arranged by PMGY throughout your Tanzania Experience, providing a mix of comfortable and social places to stay as you experience different parts of the country. Your accommodation will vary with the itinerary, with stays in Arusha, Zanzibar and on safari. WiFi is available at some locations, although connectivity can vary, so a local SIM card or eSIM is a useful way to stay connected. Short power cuts can occasionally occur as part of everyday life in Tanzania.
Volunteer House
For most of your Tanzania Experience, you will stay in our Volunteer Houses in Arusha and Zanzibar, sharing the accommodation with your fellow participants. Rooms are single sex and accommodate up to 8 people, creating a friendly and social group environment throughout your stay.
The houses provide comfortable facilities, with Western style bathrooms, communal living areas and hot water showers in most cases. Rooms include bed linen and storage for personal belongings, while local laundry services are typically available nearby.
Communal areas provide plenty of space to relax, socialise and spend time with your fellow participants outside of the daily itinerary. The accommodation also benefits from local team support and security arrangements throughout your stay.
Restaurants, supermarkets and ATMs are generally within easy reach of the Volunteer Houses. Some activities and projects are within walking distance, while local transport can be arranged for locations further away, often shared with other participants travelling to the same place.
Safari Glamping
During your 3 day safari, you will stay in comfortable glamping accommodation, giving you a memorable overnight experience close to Tanzania’s national parks. The permanent tented accommodation includes proper beds and electricity, providing a comfortable place to relax after each day on safari. Bathroom arrangements vary between tents, with some offering private ensuite facilities and others having bathroom facilities located just outside the room.

Breakfast and dinner are prepared on site by our cook and served at the Volunteer House. Meals are a mix of Tanzanian and Western dishes. When lunch is not included, you can visit the restaurant opposite the house or try nearby cafés. Western supermarkets in Arusha and Zanzibar also sell familiar foods if you would like to prepare something yourself at the house.
Meals follow a rotating weekly menu to provide variety. Dinner portions are shared equally so everyone receives a fair serving. Filtered drinking water is available at the Volunteer House.
During your three day safari and the visit to the hot springs, lunch is included on those days and is typically a more traditional local meal.

FAQ's
PMGY welcomes participants in Tanzania of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 17, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all participants need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Tanzania will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a PMGY Tanzania participant, you must provide a clean criminal background check before travelling with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the Real Experience programs — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!
Travelling overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

For your trip to Tanzania, you should book your flights to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) to arrive on the designated Sunday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Real Tanzania Experience participant.
Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Sunday of your final week in Arusha. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Please note your onward flight should depart from Kilimanjaro (JRO is the airport code). Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

Before you embark on your journey, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, which covers key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have additional or specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. Furthermore, on a monthly basis, PMGY hosts an Introductory Webinar and a Safety Webinar. These interactive sessions offer invaluable information about our projects and practical tips for staying safe abroad.
When you arrive in-country, you’ll participate in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover the general program and your specific project, including essential safety advice tailored to your destination. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card — a step we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. Additionally, you’ll receive a comprehensive list of essential contact numbers to keep on hand during your stay.
