For years, Sri Lanka has been a favourite destination for PMGY volunteers and adventurous travellers, often described as a best-kept secret.
Sri Lanka boasts over 2,000 years of rich culture, eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, stunning beaches, lush rainforests, welcoming locals, rolling surf, affordable prices, iconic train journeys, world-renowned tea, an abundance of elephants, delectable cuisine, and so much more. With short travel distances and countless attractions, your first two weeks on the Real Sri Lanka Experience will be filled with exploration and excitement, without spending hours in transit.
Your journey begins with a dive into the country’s rich history and ancient kingdoms in the Cultural Triangle. Highlights include visits to the renowned Temple of the Tooth, a cultural dance show, Sigiriya Rock, and Polonnaruwa. Next, you’ll explore the lush tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya and take in breathtaking views, walks, and waterfalls in Ella. A wildlife safari at one of Sri Lanka's famous national parks will give you the chance to spot elephants, followed by a relaxing time at Mirissa beach, where you can try bodyboarding and wander the historic streets of Galle Fort.
The final segment of the Real Sri Lanka Experience will be based in Ambalangoda, a coastal town known for its fishing heritage and as the hub for traditional wooden demon mask production. Dog Rescue – Life as a dog in Sri Lanka is far from easy. As a Sri Lanka dog rescue volunteer, one of the first things you’ll notice is the sheer number of stray dogs roaming the beaches and streets. Many of these animals struggle to find enough food, shelter, and care, which drastically shortens their lifespan. The growing issue of rabies in Sri Lanka adds to their challenges. By volunteering, you’ll play a vital role in protecting and caring for these incredible canines while fostering a stronger, more compassionate bond between animals and the local community.
English Teaching – Volunteer to teach English in Sri Lanka As a fantastic way to open up future opportunities for young people. English is a powerful skill, especially for improving career prospects and achieving long-term goals. Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival, a member of our local team will be waiting for you at Colombo Airport with a name sign for everyone joining the Sri Lanka Intro Experience.
We will transfer you to a nearby hotel, where you can unwind, recover from jet lag, and get to know your fellow travellers on the PMGY Sri Lanka Intro Experience.
Our local coordinator will provide an orientation, covering essential information such as safety advice, useful Sinhalese phrases, and what to expect over the coming weeks. If some arrivals are later in the day, the full orientation may take place on Tuesday morning.
Over the next two days, we will explore the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, Kandy. Our adventures will include a visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth, home to the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, and the Bahirawa Kanda Temple, which offers stunning hilltop views over the city.
Nestled in the central highlands, Kandy is the southern tip of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and is surrounded by lush green hills. The town’s bustling markets, traditional wood carving shops, and picturesque central lake offer a perfect blend of culture and relaxation.
On the Real Sri Lanka Experience, you will also enjoy a traditional cultural dance show, showcasing local music and performance arts. There will be free time to explore Kandy at your own pace, shop for souvenirs, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Our local team will provide recommendations on the best things to see and do.
Prepare for an action-packed day as we head to a spice and herbal plantation, where you will learn how various plants are grown and used for medicinal purposes worldwide. We will then visit the Dambulla Golden Statue, home to the world’s tallest Buddha statue in the Dhyan Mudra position and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning cave temples.
In the afternoon, we’ll head out on an exciting jeep safari through one of Sri Lanka’s famous national parks. Depending on the season and elephant migration patterns, the safari will take place in either Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park. These stunning parks offer the chance to observe majestic elephants roaming freely in their natural environment, along with monkeys, crocodiles, and even the occasional leopard.
After an adventurous afternoon, we’ll make our way to Sigiriya, where your evening meal awaits. You’ll then have time to relax and settle into your accommodation, ready for another exciting day ahead.
We begin the day in Sigiriya, home to the legendary Lion Rock Fortress, where an authentic village experience awaits. Glide across a serene lake on a traditional boat, join local hosts for a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class, and enjoy a freshly prepared village lunch surrounded by peaceful countryside.
The highlight of the day is the awe-inspiring Sigiriya Rock, an ancient royal palace built atop a 180-metre granite monolith. As you climb to the summit, explore the fascinating ruins, admire ancient frescoes and landscaped water gardens, and take in sweeping panoramic views that make this climb an unforgettable experience.
An early start takes us to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will cycle around the vast ruins of ancient palaces, Buddhist temples, and royal complexes, including the iconic Quadrangle.
After an adventurous few days, today is a chance to recharge. Spend the morning relaxing at the hotel pool before enjoying a scenic four-hour drive back to Kandy, stopping at beautiful viewpoints along the way.
Today, we head to Nuwara Eliya, a hill country town known as Little England, thanks to its colonial-style bungalows and cool climate. You’ll visit a Sri Lankan tea factory, learning about the tea-making process before sampling some fresh Ceylon tea.
After exploring Nuwara Eliya, we continue to Ella, a picturesque hill-country village. You will have time to unwind, take in the views, and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Start the morning with a hike up Little Adam’s Peak, a gentle 45-minute trek offering breathtaking panoramic views of tea plantations and lush valleys.
Next, we visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, a marvel of colonial-era engineering set amidst dense jungle. Walk along the bridge, take in the panoramic scenery, and watch as local trains pass by.
The afternoon is yours to explore Ella town, known for its cosy cafes, boutique shops, and relaxing spa treatments.
An early morning sunrise hike to Ella Rock rewards you with unparalleled views across Sri Lanka’s hill country.
After breakfast, we visit the spectacular Ravana Falls, one of Sri Lanka’s most famous cascading waterfalls.
Afterwards, we head south to Mirissa, a laid-back beach paradise where you can spend the afternoon swimming, sunbathing, or exploring the coastal town.
After an action-packed itinerary, it’s time to slow down and enjoy Mirissa’s pristine beaches.
You can surf, snorkel, try whale watching, or simply relax with a fresh coconut in hand. These two days provide the perfect opportunity to unwind before the next phase of your adventure.
We start the day by learning the traditional Sri Lankan art of stick fishing in Weligama, which is a fascinating cultural experience.
Next, we visit Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 16th century. Explore cobbled streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant street markets as you take in the history of this coastal fortress town.
After lunch, we drive to Ambalangoda, where you’ll meet your fellow PMGY volunteers and settle into the Volunteer House for the final leg of your Gap Year Sri Lanka Experience.
Your volunteering journey begins in Ambalangoda, where you’ll spend the next week supporting one of our community-based projects while experiencing everyday life on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Depending on your chosen placement, you’ll join our Childcare, Teaching, Dog Rescue, Turtle Conservation, or Medical program. Please note that the Medical program requires a minimum two-week volunteer commitment and is only available to those joining the 4 Week Real Sri Lanka Experience.
Childcare and Teaching volunteers support local preschools and community centres, helping children develop their confidence through English lessons, educational activities and creative games. Dog Rescue volunteers assist with the daily care, feeding, enrichment and welfare of rescued street dogs, while Turtle Conservation volunteers help protect endangered sea turtles through hatchery support, beach conservation and marine education activities. Outside of your volunteering, evenings are free to relax, explore Ambalangoda, or join optional activities such as yoga, cooking classes and cultural experiences organised by our local team. Some evening activities may have a small additional cost.
For those on the 3 Week Real Sri Lanka Experience, your program finishes on Saturday. If you’re flying home, our team can help arrange your airport transfer (not included in the Program Fee). If you’re continuing your travels, we can assist in organising your next steps. For those wishing to extend their stay with one of PMGY’s volunteer programs, speak to our team about your options!
If you are continuing on the 4 Week Real Sri Lanka Experience, you’ll have a final free weekend to enjoy Sri Lanka at your own pace. You may wish to relax on the nearby beaches, explore more of the south coast, or, if your dates align, join our optional Maldives Chill Out Weekend for the perfect tropical escape before beginning your final week of volunteering.
Your final week follows the same volunteering schedule, allowing you to deepen your involvement within your project and build stronger relationships with the local community. By now, you’ll be familiar with your placement and able to take on a more active role, making your final week a rewarding way to conclude your Real Sri Lanka Experience.
Sadly, your Real Sri Lanka Experience has come to an end! If you are returning home, we can assist in arranging an airport transfer (not included in the Program Fee).

Other Things to Consider on the Real Sri Lanka Experience
Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in the Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging onward transport to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you’re in-country allows for flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you’re travelling with fellow trip participants. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for the return journey to the airport due to safety risks and potential inconvenience.
Itinerary Schedule – The itineraries for our PMGY experience trips are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we strive to inform participants of any changes ahead of the program start date, daily activities during your time in-country may still be subject to last-minute adjustments.

Travelling
All your accommodation is organised by PMGY throughout your Real Sri Lanka Experience. During the travelling part of your trip, you will stay in a mix of guesthouses and hotels, sharing rooms with fellow travellers. All rooms are single sex, with fans and Western style bathrooms.
Our team will do their best to arrange twin rooms or single beds wherever possible, with this guaranteed for your first night. However, in certain locations, travellers may occasionally need to share double beds depending on availability. Each accommodation is chosen for its comfort, cleanliness and convenient location, providing a welcoming place to relax throughout your travels.
Volunteer House
During the volunteer segment of your Real Sri Lanka Experience, you will stay in our Volunteer House just outside central Ambalangoda on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The house is around 10 minutes from the main town by tuk tuk, where you will find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants. You will share the house with other PMGY volunteers from around the world, creating a friendly and social group environment.
The Volunteer House is clean and comfortable, with single sex bedrooms accommodating up to 12 people in bunk beds. Rooms have air conditioning, bed linen, storage space and personal lockers for valuables. Bathrooms are shared and have Western style toilets and showers.

The house includes free WiFi, a refrigerator and communal areas where volunteers can relax and socialise outside of their project hours. A member of the local team also lives at the house, providing ongoing support and additional security throughout your stay.

Participants receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day during the Sri Lanka Experience. Sri Lankan cuisine includes plenty of rice, with fish or chicken as the main meats, although vegetarian options are always available.
During the first two weeks of travelling, meals are typically served buffet-style, allowing volunteers to choose what they prefer. Bottled water will be provided with meals while travelling, but water outside of meals and any soft drinks will be at your own expense.
For those on the Real Sri Lanka Experience, you will be served three freshly prepared meals daily at the Volunteer House. Sri Lankan cuisine features a lot of rice, with fish or chicken as the main protein options. Vegetarian meals are always available.
The meals blend local and western cuisine, and a weekly menu is provided so you can know in advance what’s on offer. For those craving western comforts, restaurants in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa serve a range of western meals.

FAQ's
PMGY welcomes participants in Sri Lanka of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 17, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all participants need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Sri Lanka will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a PMGY Sri Lanka participant, you must provide a clean criminal background check before travelling with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the Real Experience programs — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation! However, please note that medical and healthcare projects often require additional documentation before participation begins in-country.
Travelling overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

For your trip to Sri Lanka, you should book your flights to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo (airport code CMB) to arrive on the designated Monday start date after 9:30am. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Real Sri Lanka Experience participant.
Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Saturday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.
