Alongside exploring Bali’s natural and cultural wonders, you’ll dedicate time to meaningful volunteer projects, contributing to local communities while honing your skills. On the Real Bali Experience, you’ll arrive on a set date, join your group, and spend three or four incredible weeks travelling and volunteering. This makes the PMGY Experience trips perfect for anyone eager to explore and embrace new experiences with like-minded people.
As part of this unique journey, you will immerse yourself in Bali’s diverse beauty, from exploring ancient Hindu temples and snorkelling with turtles around Gili to hiking Mount Batur at sunrise. Your adventure will span the island’s most iconic locations and hidden treasures before dedicating time to volunteering projects in southern Bali. Across this itinerary, prepare for awe-inspiring sights, lifelong friendships, and a complete cultural immersion. The Real Bali Experience is perfect for those seeking a safe, structured, and social travel environment.
All in-country transport and accommodation will be expertly arranged by our local team, ensuring a seamless experience throughout the Real Bali Experience. They’ll also organise a variety of exciting activities to enhance your trip. For any downtime, our local experts will guide you towards additional adventures and experiences Bali has to offer. A portion of your time will be dedicated to volunteer work, giving you the chance to make a tangible difference within a local community while applying your skills and enthusiasm in a meaningful way.
The group nature of this trip creates an exceptional social experience, giving you the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and form lifelong friendships. Throughout the journey, you’ll stay together as a group, creating shared moments and memories you’ll cherish forever. You’ll also have the chance to connect with local communities, making your gap year program in Bali even more enriching.
Exploring Bali
Bali’s rise in popularity since the 1980s has made it a global hotspot, with tourism playing a significant role in its economy. Boasting paradise beaches, world-class diving, and a thriving international yoga scene, the island offers an endless array of exotic attractions. However, beyond the tourist attractions, many local people face limited opportunities, often working long hours for small profits.
Your Real Bali Experience offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the island’s wonders while giving back to the community. By supporting local businesses and participating in meaningful volunteering projects, you’ll experience the true essence of Bali. From black sand beaches to the distinctive Luwak Coffee (you’ll soon discover what makes it so special!) and miles of pristine coastline, this adventure is one not to miss.

With short travel distances and countless sites to explore, your time in Bali will be spent savouring its beauty rather than in transit. Prepare for stunning volcanic mountains, picturesque beaches, and lush greenery at every turn.
Your journey begins with exploring Bali’s famous beaches, from the cliffs of Uluwatu to the vibrant vibes of Canggu. The highlight for many is Gili Trawangan, where crystal-clear waters, tropical fish, and wild turtles create a true island paradise. From there, you’ll head inland to discover Bali’s mountains, valleys, and rivers. Here, you’ll engage with small community businesses and learn traditional skills like sarong-making.
The adventure continues with a sunrise trek up Mount Batur, offering mesmerising views. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful temples and breathtaking landscapes. Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, awaits with its bustling markets, vegan cafes, yoga classes, and traditional farming. Don’t miss the cheeky monkeys, Kecak dance performances, and opportunities to immerse yourself in the island’s vibrant energy.
During the final segment of the Real Bali Experience, you’ll stay in Tabanan with other participants on the Bali volunteer program. Known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Bali,’ Tabanan is a traditional town surrounded by iconic paddy fields. With no tourists in sight, the town offers an authentic glimpse into local life. You’ll be surrounded by intricate Hindu temples, daily offerings, and captivating rituals, experiencing Bali as the locals do.
Your group will travel together in a private minibus, visiting Bali’s most famous destinations and hidden treasures. Accompanied by a PMGY coordinator and an English-speaking guide, you’ll gain deep insights into Bali’s culture and history throughout your adventure.
Volunteer Placement
PMGY’s Bali volunteer program runs year-round, meaning you’ll be working alongside existing PMGY volunteers. During the volunteer segment of your Real Bali Experience, you’ll have the chance to join one of our projects, either teaching English, supporting our childcare projects or working on our wildlife projects.
By choosing to volunteer in Bali, you’ll immerse yourself in local life, spending time within the community and gaining first-hand insight into what life is like for the Balinese people. Your involvement in these projects ensures you’ll leave a positive impact during the Real Bali Experience.
One of the most unforgettable aspects of Bali is its vibrant traditions and fascinating culture. Combined with the warm and genuine hospitality of the local people, who are eager to welcome you and share their way of life, this experience promises to be truly enriching.
Your volunteer abroad program run from Monday-Thursday with Friday being optional but encouraged. The morning session will run from around 8am-12pm and the afternoon session 1pm-4pm. Your daily schedule will depend on planned activities and participant numbers, which will determine whether you take part in one session or both sessions each day. You will travel to the project by bemo or private car, with journeys usually taking no more than 20 minutes. As part of the wildlife program, the mangrove conservation activity is further away and may take around 1 hour to reach.

You’ll be able to select the project you wish to participate in during the online application process. The available options include:
Childcare – Are you eager to share your time, energy, and enthusiasm with children around the world? As a childcare volunteer in Bali, you’ll make a meaningful difference in the Tabanan community. You’ll help with daily care, organise creative activities like crafts, and teach English through fun songs and music. This is a fantastic opportunity to volunteer with children aged 1-8, giving them a strong foundation before they begin their formal education.
Teaching – Volunteer teaching English in Bali to help students develop valuable skills and reach their future goals. Practising with fluent, native speakers boosts their English abilities, an essential skill for securing future jobs. English has become a crucial language for Balinese people to progress in life, as it opens doors to direct communication with tourists. This, in turn, increases Bali’s global visibility and recognition.
Wildlife – Are you passionate about protecting animals and the environment? As a wildlife conservation volunteer in Bali, you will support a range of local initiatives focused on animal welfare and sustainability. Activities rotate across several projects, including assisting at a wildlife rescue centre, supporting mangrove conservation work, taking part in beach clean ups to protect marine ecosystems, and helping at the AREC dog project caring for rescued street dogs. This is a hands-on placement and a great choice for those who enjoy being outdoors while contributing to the protection of Bali’s natural environment.
Itinerary
Please make sure you arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) on the selected Sunday start date.
Om Suastiastu! A member of our local team will be waiting for you at the airport, holding a PMGY sign with your name on it. From there, you’ll be transferred to a hotel in Kuta, around 30 minutes away.
The rest of the day is yours to unwind, whether you relax by the pool, enjoy the beach, or simply rest and recover from jet lag. Throughout the day, you will have the chance to meet your new adventure buddies on the Real Bali Experience.
After breakfast, you’ll receive an orientation from a PMGY staff member, who will introduce you to Bali, safety advice, and what to expect on your group tour.
Next, we’ll visit Uluwatu Temple, perched dramatically on a 70ft cliff, offering breathtaking coastal views. After a delicious Balinese lunch, it’s time to unwind at Jerman Beach.
Kuta’s lively beachfront is the perfect place to start your adventure, whether you choose to surf, sip on a fresh coconut, or simply relax as the sun sets and marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
It is an early start as we set off for the Gili Islands, heading straight to Gili Trawangan. After checking into your hostel, collect your bike since there are no motorised vehicles on the island. Cycling is the best way to explore this idyllic place.
Spend the day as you wish, whether you swim in clear waters, snorkel, browse the local shops, or simply unwind on the beach. Gili T offers a range of evening options, so you can enjoy the island’s social atmosphere or keep things relaxed depending on how you feel.
Dive into the turquoise waters for an unforgettable snorkelling trip, stopping at 3-4 stunning sites. Keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles gracefully swimming in their natural habitat.
The rest of the day is yours to enjoy, whether you explore the island, relax on the beach, or experience more of Gili T’s lively evening scene with beach bars, fire dancers and beautiful sunset views.
After a final morning soaking up Gili’s beaches, we’ll take the boat back to Bali and travel to Padang Bai, home to lush rice paddies, mountains, and valleys.
Over the next two days, we will be visiting Tenganan Village, where you will have the chance to quickly learn about the process of creating a traditional Balinese sarong and even write your Balinese name on palm leaves. We will also take you to Penglipuran Village, famous for its preserved Balinese architecture, where you can see how locals prepare a traditional drink called Loloh, made from the extract of Cemcem leaves. These two days will give you a deeper insight into authentic Balinese traditions and provide more opportunities to connect with other members of your group.
Rise and shine, as the trek begins at midnight and takes you up Mount Batur to reach the peak at 5,500 feet just in time for a spectacular sunrise over Lake Batur.
After a well-earned rest at Toya Bungkah Hot Springs, we’ll travel to Lovina, where you can relax by the pool, enjoy sea views, and have a peaceful dinner after a thrilling start to the day.
Wake up early for a dolphin-spotting boat trip off Lovina’s coast, followed by a visit to Banyumala Waterfalls. After a short trek, you’ll arrive at a breathtaking cascade, perfect for a refreshing swim.
Back at your accommodation, enjoy some group bonding activities, games, and a relaxing evening by the sea.
We’ll visit the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO-listed site where Balinese farmers maintain centuries-old irrigation techniques. After admiring the stunning landscapes and watching daily farming routines, we’ll head to Ubud, where we’ll check in and relax for the evening.
Explore Ubud, Bali’s cultural hub, famous for its art, crafts, and markets. Browse the bustling Ubud Art Market, practice your haggling skills, and pick up souvenirs.
For those feeling adventurous, take a scenic walk along Campuhan Ridge, visit the Royal Palace, or dare to explore the Sacred Monkey Forest.
We’ll begin the day at Gunung Kawi, an ancient rock-carved shrine dedicated to Balinese royalty. After a coffee and tea tasting experience, we’ll visit Tirta Empul Temple, home to Bali’s famous holy spring purification ritual.
Wearing a traditional sarong, you will enter the sacred waters to take part in a blessing ceremony, which is a special Balinese experience.
Start the day at Sangeh Monkey Forest, where you’ll meet Bali’s cheekiest residents. Then, enjoy a chocolate-making class, learning how cacao is transformed into delicious treats (with plenty of samples, of course!).
In the afternoon, we’ll visit Tanah Lot Temple, one of Bali’s most iconic sea temples, before returning to Canggu for our final night of travels, soaking up Bali’s vibrant nightlife and beach scene.
Today is yours to spend however you like, whether you enjoy the beach, pick up some last-minute souvenirs, or treat yourself to a relaxing massage.
If you’ve chosen to continue your journey to the Volunteer House in Tabanan, this evening marks the start of your volunteer adventure.
This weekend is yours to enjoy, whether you relax on Canggu Beach, spend time on a rooftop terrace, or take a final chance to explore Bali before starting your volunteering program.
Your volunteer orientation begins with a local tour, where our team will show you essential spots such as supermarkets, ATMs and markets. You’ll also learn about safety guidelines, cultural expectations, and the community projects you’ll be supporting.
After settling in, enjoy a welcome dinner and prepare for your volunteering experience.
Tuesday marks the start of your volunteer program. After breakfast at the Volunteer House, private transport will take you to your project site if it is not within walking distance.
Childcare volunteers will support kindergartens and childcare centres established by PMGY’s local team in Tabanan. Many families working in farming and fishing communities struggle to access quality childcare, making your role especially valuable. Working with children aged 2 to 6 years, you’ll help build confidence, teach basic English, and lead structured games and activities. Depending on local needs, volunteers may also assist with classroom improvements or simple renovation projects. Throughout your placement, our local coordinators will be on hand to provide guidance and support.
Teaching volunteers will work in community schools and education projects where English skills are increasingly important. At the Akasa Foundation, you’ll help deliver informal English lessons to underprivileged children, focusing on conversational English through fun and interactive activities. You may also support local schools, helping students develop confidence while creating an engaging classroom environment.
Wildlife conservation volunteers will take part in a variety of outdoor activities that protect Bali’s environment and support animal welfare. Activities may include assisting at a wildlife rescue centre, helping care for rescued street dogs at the AREC project, joining organised beach clean-ups, and supporting mangrove planting and maintenance. The schedule varies throughout the week, giving volunteers a broad understanding of the environmental challenges facing the region and the projects helping to address them.
You’ll receive 3 meals each day at the Volunteer House, and evenings often include optional cultural activities such as yoga sessions and visits to local hot springs. Some evening activities may have a small additional cost.
For those on the 3 Week Real Bali Experience, your program finishes on Saturday. If you’re flying home, our team can help arrange your airport transfer (not included in the Program Fee). If you’re continuing your travels, we can assist in organising your next steps. For those wishing to extend their stay with one of PMGY’s volunteer programs, speak to our team about your options!
If you are continuing on the 4 Week Real Bali Experience, you have a final free weekend to enjoy Bali at your own pace. You may wish to explore more of the island, relax on the beaches, visit nearby attractions, or simply enjoy some downtime around Tabanan before beginning your final week of volunteering.
Your final week follows the same Monday to Thursday volunteering schedule as the previous week, allowing you to continue building relationships within your project and contribute further to the local community. By now, you’ll be familiar with your placement and able to take a more active role in daily activities, making this a rewarding way to round off your time in Bali before departing.
Take some time to reflect on your experience, enjoy some final sightseeing, or simply relax before your journey home. If you would like, you also have the option to spend one last day volunteering at your project, as Fridays are an optional volunteer day.
Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye as your 4 week Real Bali Experience comes to an end. If you’re flying home, our team can help arrange your airport transfer (not included in the Program Fee). If you’re continuing your travels, we can assist in organising your next steps.

Other Things to Consider on the Real Bali Experience
Return Airport Transfer – Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you’re in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Alternatively, ridesharing apps are a common and cost-effective option. Many participants travel during their final days and may not return to the airport directly from the accommodation. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you’re travelling with fellow trip participants.
Itinerary Schedule – The itineraries for our PMGY experience trips are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we strive to inform participants of any changes ahead of the program start date, daily activities during your time in-country may still be subject to last-minute adjustments.
TEFL Course – We recommend that volunteers prepare thoroughly for their teaching program overseas. To maximise your impact, consider completing our convenient, affordable, and internationally accredited 60-hour Online TEFL Course.
Volunteering Experience – The Real Bali Experience offers two distinct phases: the first two weeks of exploring Bali’s incredible sites and the latter one or two weeks volunteering in the local town of Tabanan. In Tabanan, the standard of living is more basic compared to the vacation-style accommodation you’ll enjoy while travelling. The pace of life also slows as you immerse yourself in the relaxed lifestyle of a traditional Balinese family. Tabanan is a conservative town with a deeply rooted traditional culture. We ask all participants to respect local customs and adhere to their cultural norms during their stay.

Travelling
All accommodation is arranged for you during the first two weeks of your Real Bali Experience. As you travel around the island, you will stay in comfortable guesthouses or hotels, sharing rooms with fellow participants and enjoying the social group experience.
Rooms are single sex and air conditioned, with Western style bathroom facilities. WiFi is typically available, although at some properties this may be limited to communal areas.
Volunteering
For the volunteering part of your Real Bali Experience, you will stay in one of our Volunteer Houses in Tabanan. This traditional Balinese town offers a more local experience, with restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs within easy reach. You will live alongside other PMGY volunteers, creating a friendly and social base for your final two weeks.
Rooms are single sex dormitories with bunk beds for up to 8 people and include air conditioning, mosquito nets or curtains, and bed linen. Bathrooms are shared and feature Western style toilets and showers. Water is typically cold, which is common locally given Bali’s warm climate.

To ensure your belongings are secure, we recommend bringing small padlocks and storing any valuables in the lockers provided. Volunteers are encouraged to pack lightly and bring only essential items for their volunteer work in Bali. Fridge space is available for keeping any food or drinks chilled.
The Volunteer House features several communal spaces where you can relax, bond with your fellow volunteers, or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English. Conveniently, the house is situated next to our local team’s residence. While volunteers have their own private living area, the proximity to the host family ensures additional support and provides a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Balinese culture, connect with the local community, and practise your language skills.
Some volunteer projects are within walking distance of the Volunteer House, while others are further away. For placements that are not walkable, PMGY provides daily transport via minivan or private car, with the cost of this service included in your Program Fee.
During busier periods, we operate multiple Volunteer Houses within Tabanan. Each house provides the same core facilities, although there may be slight variations in location, amenities, or capacity. Due to the popularity of our Bali programs, we are unable to accept specific accommodation requests. However, we are always able to place friends and small groups in the same accommodation.

During the two weeks of travelling, meals are typically served buffet-style, allowing participants to choose what they prefer. Bottled water will be provided with meals while travelling, but water outside of meals and any soft drinks will be at your own expense.

Tabanan offers a wide range of restaurants and local warungs (authentic food stalls) serving traditional Balinese cuisine, which is often vegetarian and packed with flavour. Occasionally, a western-style meal may be provided at the Volunteer House, and there are restaurants offering western dishes within a 20-minute walk.
