Summary of The Real Australia Experience
The Real Australia Experience begins in Cairns, where you will spend your first two or four weeks joining a hands on wildlife project focused on the care and rehabilitation of rescued native animals. You will support experienced coordinators with daily feeding, enclosure upkeep, enrichment, and general care for species that have been injured or displaced. This gives you a grounded and rewarding introduction to Australian conservation while you settle into life with a friendly volunteer group. Evenings are relaxed, and the project creates a close connection to the environment before the next stage of your journey begins.
After completing your placement you will take a short internal flight (included in the price) to Sydney, where the group tour starts. From here you will make your way north along the coast all the way back to Cairns. Sydney’s harbour and energetic streets set the tone before you begin travelling through bohemian beach towns, rainforest areas, and surf beaches. Along the way you will enjoy a two night camping adventure on Kgari which is Fraser Island, a two night sailing experience in the Whitsundays including Whitehaven Beach, and then continue to tropical North Queensland which is known for exciting outdoor activities. You will finish with a full day snorkelling or diving at the Great Barrier Reef.
Throughout the trip you will travel in comfort via air conditioned coaches with WiFi, stay in shared dorm style accommodation, and take part in a range of excursions and wildlife encounters. There is also time for spontaneous moments and local extras recommended by your group leader. Designed for social and curious travellers, the Real Australia Experience offers purpose, connection, and the chance to explore one of the world’s most memorable coastal routes from end to end.

Australia is a country of staggering variety, shaped by ancient landscapes, unique wildlife, and a laid back culture that welcomes travellers from all over the world. From modern cities to remote coastlines and dense tropical rainforest, it offers an ever changing mix of scenery and experiences. Its national commitment to conservation, friendly communities, and outdoor way of life have made it a favourite destination for those seeking both adventure and meaning.
With thousands of kilometres of coastline, world famous beaches, vibrant marine life, and an interior rich in Aboriginal history, Australia feels both familiar and completely new at the same time. You will find colourful coral reefs, eucalyptus forests filled with native wildlife, relaxed surf towns, warm sunny weather, and some of the most photographed natural wonders on the planet. Travel between regions is easy and the variety of attractions means every day brings something different.
Your first two weeks on the Real Australia Experience take place in Cairns where you will support a wildlife project dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of rescued native animals. This introduction to conservation work is practical and engaging as you help with feeding routines, enclosure upkeep, enrichment, and general care. It is an ideal way to gain insight into Australia’s unique species while enjoying the tropical surroundings that Far North Queensland is known for.
Once your project placement ends you will take a short internal flight to Sydney and begin the journey north along the coast back to Cairns. You will explore Sydney Harbour and iconic viewpoints before travelling through beach towns, rainforest regions, and celebrated surf areas. Major highlights include a two night camping adventure on Kgari which is Fraser Island, a two night sailing trip in the Whitsundays including Whitehaven Beach, and time in North Queensland which offers endless options for outdoor activity. A full day at the Great Barrier Reef will give you the chance to snorkel or dive among some of the richest marine life in the world.
Throughout your travels you will journey in comfort by air conditioned coaches with WiFi, stay in shared dorm style accommodation, and experience a blend of famous sights and lesser known spots recommended by your group leader. With guidance from a knowledgeable coordinator you will gain a deeper understanding of Australia’s culture, nature, and diverse coastline, making the Real Australia Experience an enriching and memorable way to explore this remarkable country.
Volunteer Placement
Volunteer work on the Real Australia Experience begins in Cairns where you will join a wildlife project dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of rescued native animals. This ongoing conservation effort runs throughout the year which means you will work alongside experienced coordinators and other volunteers who support the centre’s daily operations. Your role may include feeding routines, enclosure upkeep, enrichment, and general animal care, giving you a clear insight into how these facilities protect Australia’s unique species.
Taking part in this project allows you to engage closely with the local environment and understand the challenges faced by native wildlife. It offers a rewarding opportunity to learn about conservation practices while contributing to work that genuinely supports the wellbeing of the animals in care. What makes this part of the experience especially memorable is the welcoming atmosphere at the centre and in the wider Cairns community. You will be met with friendly conversations, relaxed evenings, and a sense of belonging that helps you settle in quickly. It is an introduction that brings purpose to your time in Australia and sets the foundation for the coast to coast journey that follows.

Wildlife – As a volunteer in Tropical North Queensland, you will support a project dedicated to the care and protection of native species that live within one of the region’s most respected wildlife parks. Set within Port Douglas, this program focuses on daily animal care, habitat upkeep, and practical conservation tasks that help maintain the wellbeing of more than one hundred Australian species. Guided by experienced wildlife keepers, you will take part in hands on work that supports long term care and strengthens the environments these animals rely upon.
From your first week onward, you will build a strong understanding of wildlife management. This includes preparing food for animals, maintaining enclosures, collecting plant material for koalas, assisting with record keeping under supervision, and helping ensure the park remains a clean and safe space for both animals and visitors. Training is entirely practical and takes place within the park’s recreated ecosystems, giving you real experience while allowing you to contribute to meaningful conservation work.
The wildlife park features five distinct ecosystems including woodlands, wetlands, rainforest, nocturnal areas, and savannah, all spread across several acres of land. Volunteers help maintain these environments through tasks such as cleaning enclosures, supporting plantation care, assisting with upkeep of displays, and helping preserve the natural materials that shape each habitat. Consistent care is essential, as healthy spaces directly affect the comfort, behaviour, and safety of the species that live in them.
Volunteers may also assist with duties that bring them closer to the animals themselves. This can include animal handling under guidance, caring for injured or orphaned wildlife, joining keepers on guided tours, and greeting visitors while offering insight into the species within the park. These activities help promote understanding of Australia’s wildlife and highlight the importance of protecting natural habitats across the region.
By joining this program, you will support the protection of Australia’s remarkable wildlife while experiencing the beauty of Port Douglas with its beaches, rainforest trails, and welcoming community. It is a rare chance to contribute to an important conservation mission and to help care for the animals that make this part of Queensland so special.

Other Things to Consider on the Real Australia Experience
Itinerary Schedule - The itinerary is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we strive to inform participants of any changes ahead of the program start date, daily activities during your time in-country may still be subject to last-minute adjustments.
Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in the Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging onward transport to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you're in-country allows for flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you're travelling with fellow trip participants.
Diving Upgrade - Days 35 and 36 of the itinerary are interchangeable, and the order of activities is subject to change. Your Great Barrier Reef Day Trip may occur on either Day 35 or Day 36, your Group Leader will confirm this at the start of your tour. This full-day trip includes snorkelling, and you are safe to fly within 24 hours after snorkelling. However, introductory scuba dives are also available as an optional upgrade, which can be organised and booked on the day of your trip. Please note that diving introduces a risk of decompression sickness (commonly known as “the bends”) due to nitrogen build-up in the body. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you do not fly for at least 24 hours after diving.
Nights in Cairns - As part of this program, please note you have multiple nights upon arrival into Cairns and at the end of your stay, where you will be based at a backpackers hostel. This is mainly free/down time and is included in the Program Fee.
Popularity of Program - As this program reaches full capacity often, we encourage you to apply and secure your spot as soon as possible once you are 100% certain of joining.
Days Off - Your volunteer work in Australia runs five days each week. As the project runs seven days a week, your days off may vary and won’t necessarily be consecutive. Many volunteers use this time to travel around the surrounding areas of Port Douglas.
Accommodation - Shared & Comfort Options Available
🛏️ Shared Option - Standard Offering (Recommended for 18-25 Year Olds)

Meals
Some meals are included in the Program Fee, please refer to the itinerary section for specific details. Dining out in Australia is both accessible and varied, with local cuisine celebrated for its freshness and quality. We recommend a travel budget of approx 80-100 AUD per day for meals when not included in the itinerary.
For those on the Real Australia Experience, breakfast and lunch are included on your rostered work days during the Australia wildlife program. These meals are provided at the project and give volunteers a convenient way to stay fuelled throughout the morning and early afternoon. Dinner is not included, so volunteers usually prepare their own evening meals in the shared kitchen at the accommodation or pick up something from nearby cafes and restaurants. Volunteers will have access to drinking water at both the accommodation and the volunteer project.
* Our team will do their best to accommodate dietary requirements; however, this cannot always be guaranteed. Participants may need to purchase additional ingredients at their own expense. Please note any dietary requirements in your application and remind the local team upon arrival. For major concerns, contact the PMGY International Team before confirming your place on the program.
Here is an example of the meals you can expect when included:
Breakfast
Toast, Eggs, Fruit, Tea/Coffee, Juice
Lunch
Sandwiches, Burgers, Wraps (Volunteer Days)
Dinner
Aussie BBQ, casual Western dining
FAQ's
PMGY welcomes participants in Australia of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all participants need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Bali will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a PMGY Australia participant, you must provide a clean criminal background check before travelling with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the Real Experience programs — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!
Travelling overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.
If you have any concerns or queries regarding your eligibility or suitability for the Real Australia Experience, we recommend that you contact us before committing to the program. Our team is always happy to assist you in making an informed decision and ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all involved.

For your trip to Australia, you should book your flights to Cairns International Airport (airport code CNS) to arrive on the designated Monday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Real Australia Experience participant.
Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Tuesday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.
Whether you’re just arriving or bidding farewell to Australia, our team is here to ensure your transition is as seamless and stress-free as possible. Your time as a Real Australia Experience participant will leave you with unforgettable memories, meaningful connections, and a lasting impact on the communities you’ve helped.
You can apply anytime for most of our programs, including the Australia Intro Experience. However, we strongly recommend applying early to secure your spot. Some of our programs have limited capacity, and spaces can fill quickly, especially during the peak travel season from June to August. If you plan to join us during this period, it’s best to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
When you decide to embark on this experience, you should be fully committed to joining the program. To apply, simply click the “Apply Now” button on the Australia Intro Experience page. This will take you step-by-step through our online Application Process. It’s quick, simple, and designed to make securing your place as easy as possible.

Participant safety in each destination is our top priority and is monitored regularly. A member of our International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program to ensure it meets our high standards. We also stay up to date with the latest travel advice from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Through constant communication with our local teams, we make sure participants are always placed in safe, stable regions.
Our International Team has personally visited and participated in every program we offer, paying close attention to every detail from accommodation and local neighbourhoods to food and transport. These meticulous checks ensure that all aspects of your stay meet our rigorous standards. In addition, our local teams in Australia are experienced professionals with years of expertise in hosting international travellers. They act as PMGY’s trusted representatives, offering 24/7 support throughout your time on the program. To further enhance safety, PMGY provides a 24-hour international emergency line, and our in-country staff maintain strong connections with local medical professionals to ensure immediate assistance is available whenever needed.
Before your journey begins, you’ll receive a comprehensive Handbook covering key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. PMGY also hosts monthly Introductory Webinar and Safety Webinars, which provide valuable information about our programs and practical tips for staying safe while abroad.
Upon arrival in Australia, you’ll take part in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover general information, destination-specific safety advice, and guidance on cultural expectations. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card, something we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. You’ll also receive a list of essential contact numbers to keep handy throughout your stay.
While no travel experience can ever be completely free from challenges, PMGY takes every possible measure to ensure your time on the Australia Intro Experience is safe, enjoyable, and rewarding. We strongly encourage you to follow the advice and guidance of our local team to ensure a smooth and secure adventure.
