As a PMGY Australia wildlife volunteer, you will spend your days supporting the daily care of native animals inside one of Queensland's most respected wildlife parks. Your time on the program involves hands on conservation tasks, enclosure maintenance, animal feeding, and opportunities to learn directly from experienced wildlife keepers. Volunteers usually take part in activities from Monday to Friday, with routines shaped by the needs of the animals and the operations of the park. Each morning begins on site in Port Douglas, where you will join the team for a full day of structured conservation work.
Your day starts at 7:30am, followed by a clear outline of the tasks planned for the morning. Duties often include preparing food for animals, cleaning habitats, collecting fresh leaf material for koalas and tree kangaroos, and assisting with upkeep across the park's recreated ecosystems. A midday break allows time to rest and eat before continuing with afternoon responsibilities. Your schedule runs 5 days per week with 2 days free to relax, visit nearby beaches, explore rainforest trails, or enjoy the friendly atmosphere of Port Douglas.

Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in the Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging onward transport to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you're in-country allows for flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you're travelling with fellow trip participants. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for the return journey to the airport due to safety risks and potential inconvenience.
Offsite Conservation Opportunities - During your placement, you may be invited to join offsite activities that support wider conservation efforts in the region. These can include beach cleanups, tree planting days, and educational visits to local wildlife rehabilitation centres. Regardless of which accommodation option you choose in Port Douglas, your first night in Australia and your final 2 nights after completing the program will be spent in a centrally located backpacker hostel in Cairns.
Accommodation in Cairns is provided in shared rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The hostel also offers kitchen and laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi throughout most areas. A supermarket is located directly opposite, with cafés, restaurants and shops all within easy walking distance.

During your time on the Australia Wildlife program, you will stay in comfortable shared volunteer housing in Port Douglas, just a short walk from the beach. The accommodation has a relaxed and social atmosphere, with volunteers living together in same gender dorm rooms, making it easy to get to know the people you will be working alongside each day.
Each house has 3 bedrooms with bunk beds and air conditioning, along with 2 shared bathrooms with toilet and shower facilities. There is a fully equipped kitchen, private laundry facilities and a shared living area with a sofa, TV and board games.
Outside, you will find a covered area for relaxing, as well as access to a private swimming pool where volunteers can cool off during their free time. Free Wi-Fi is available across the property, and Four Mile Beach is only a few minutes away on foot.
Port Douglas itself is a welcoming coastal town with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. During your free time, you can visit Four Mile Beach, explore the Sunday markets, enjoy the local cafés and restaurants, or take trips to Mossman Gorge and other nearby attractions.

Comfort Option participants stay at Nimrod Resort Apartments, subject to availability, a modern self catering resort in Port Douglas just a 5 minute walk from Four Mile Beach. Your accommodation includes a private bathroom for your sole use, along with a kitchen, washing machine, air conditioning and a private balcony or patio area.
The resort also features a large lagoon style swimming pool, tennis court, barbecue facilities and free unlimited Wi-Fi throughout the property.
