As a group leader, I worked closely with PMGY, who provided fantastic support, from promotional materials to seamless pre-departure guidance, ensuring we could focus on our studies while preparing for the trip. The highlight was working in medical camps within slum communities, where we played a vital role in providing free primary healthcare to those who needed it most, gaining invaluable insights into India’s healthcare challenges. Vishy, the PMGY India coordinator, went above and beyond, enriching our experience with cultural activities like Bollywood dance classes and sari dressing, as well as unforgettable adventures, including a sunrise tour of the Taj Mahal. We left with a deeper understanding of Indian healthcare, cherished memories of giving back, and a profound appreciation for the country’s incredible culture and people."

Itinerary

We’ve created a 14-day sample itinerary showcasing the ultimate India group medical trip, blending medical placements, travel, adventure, and cultural immersion. While this provides a great starting point, we understand every group has unique goals. That’s why we offer bespoke itineraries tailored to your needs - whether you want to adjust the trip length, focus solely on medical volunteering, or combine it with travel experiences. Whatever your preferences, we’ll ensure your India group trip is affordable, structured, safe, and unforgettable.

Welcome to India! Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, your group will be warmly greeted by Vishy from the PMGY India team, easily recognisable in his PMGY T-shirt. From the airport, you’ll take a private bus to your accommodation in Faridabad, your home base for volunteering. The one-hour journey provides your first glimpse of India’s bustling streets and vibrant culture. Once settled, you’ll enjoy a freshly prepared welcome meal, offering a delicious introduction to Indian cuisine.

The next day begins with a hearty Indian breakfast before diving into your orientation. The PMGY team will provide an overview of what to expect during your stay, covering topics like health and safety, cultural differences, local customs, and your trip itinerary. After a filling lunch, you’ll head out to explore the local area, visiting a nearby temple and bustling markets. The evening concludes with a traditional Indian dinner, preparing you for an exciting start to your volunteering journey.

On day 3, your medical volunteer journey begins as you are transported to outreach clinics in Faridabad’s main slum communities, including the Sector 10 clinic near the Volunteer House. Over the next three days, you’ll play a vital role in providing free healthcare to underserved populations, addressing the urgent needs of communities with little to no access to medical services. Under the supervision of local healthcare staff, you may assist with basic hands-on tasks such as checking vitals, monitoring blood sugars, and dressing minor wounds. These clinics see anywhere from 15 to 30 patients daily, with PMGY’s dedicated medical team and local doctors leading the way.

Additionally, free medical camps extend into other slum and refugee communities, with locations chosen based on the most pressing needs. Volunteers receive ongoing training and guidance, learning to identify unique clinical signs and symptoms often seen in slum environments. Language barriers are overcome with the help of English-speaking doctors or interpreters, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging experience. With each clinic visit, you’ll gain valuable insights into the realities of healthcare in deprived areas while making a meaningful impact on the lives of the local population.

Afternoons are reserved for cultural immersion. After a hearty Indian lunch, you can enjoy activities like a Bollywood movie screening, pottery classes, and cooking lessons, which will help you connect more deeply to India’s vibrant traditions and lifestyle.

On day 6, it’s time to explore the lively streets of Old Delhi. You’ll start with a visit to The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in history. Then, you’ll visit the intricate Birla Mandir temple, renowned for its stunning architecture and cultural significance. The day wraps up at the innovative Seven Wonders Park, featuring replicas of the world’s most famous landmarks made entirely from recycled materials. You’ll return to the accommodation for a well-deserved evening meal.

A full day in New Delhi awaits, beginning with a stroll through the picturesque Lodhi Gardens, dotted with historic tombs and lush greenery. You’ll then visit the iconic India Gate, a majestic monument honouring Indian soldiers of World War I. Your exploration continues at Humayun’s Tomb, an architectural masterpiece that inspired the Taj Mahal, followed by a visit to the Gandhi Museum to learn about Mahatma Gandhi’s remarkable legacy. After a day immersed in history and culture, you’ll return to Faridabad for dinner and relaxation.

Returning to Faridabad, your medical placements continue at local hospitals, offering a unique opportunity to shadow healthcare professionals across various departments such as paediatrics, ophthalmology, general medicine, and gynaecology. Mornings are spent observing patient care during doctor rounds and conducting basic health checks under supervision. At the same time, afternoons may provide the chance to witness surgeries, offering more profound insights into medical practices. These placements provide valuable exposure to the challenges of India’s healthcare system, with private hospitals offering more significant learning opportunities, more surgical cases, and better access to guidance from local doctors. Although surgeries are confirmed ad hoc, they provide a fascinating comparison to healthcare systems back home, making this an eye-opening experience.

Evenings bring engaging cultural experiences such as yoga and Bollywood dance classes, giving you a well-rounded insight into India’s traditions.

It’s time to embark on the first leg of India’s famous Golden Triangle. Departing early, you’ll travel to Jaipur, the vibrant Pink City. Your first stop is the magnificent Amber Fort, perched on a hilltop overlooking Maota Lake. You’ll also visit the Albert Hall Museum, Jal Mahal (Water Palace), and Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), marvelling at the city’s stunning architecture.

On day 12, you’ll explore Charan Mandir for breathtaking views and visit the Chand Baori Stepwell, a mesmerising ancient water reservoir. The day ends with a visit to Jagat Shiromani Temple, known for its historical and religious significance. In the evening, you’ll travel to Agra, ready for an early start the next day.

Rise early to witness the sunrise at the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. An English-speaking guide will share the captivating story of this architectural marvel, built as a symbol of love. After exploring the Taj Mahal, you’ll visit Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as a royal residence. Following lunch and some shopping at a local market, you’ll return to Faridabad for your final evening in India.

Your two-week adventure concludes with a reflective day in Faridabad. You’ll visit the community projects one last time to say your goodbyes, pick up souvenirs at the local market, and enjoy a final meal with the PMGY team. Later, you’ll be transferred to Delhi International Airport in time for your flight home. It’s been an unforgettable journey!
