Your Field Experience in Sri Lanka
Your field experience forms the practical foundation of the Sri Lanka Child Development program. Working alongside experienced preschool teachers and community educators, you will apply your learning within welcoming early years settings that support children between the ages of 3-5.
Most participants are based either at Happy Hearts Preschool & Day Care Centre or one of several community preschools located throughout Ambalangoda. Each setting provides children with opportunities to learn through structured play, creative activities, early literacy, movement, music, and social interaction within a safe and supportive environment.
Throughout your placement you will assist with storytelling, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, educational games, simple English language activities, outdoor play, and classroom routines that encourage curiosity and confidence. Your Role & Typical Day in Sri Lanka
As a participant in the Sri Lanka Child Development program, your primary role is to support local preschool teachers by helping create engaging learning experiences that encourage children’s confidence, communication, creativity, and social development.
Morning preschool sessions typically take place Monday to Friday between approximately 9am and 11:30am, although some placements may begin slightly earlier or continue for longer depending on the needs of the preschool. Participants wishing to become more involved may also have opportunities to support afternoon community education initiatives.
Your daily activities may include leading songs and movement sessions, storytelling, arts and crafts, educational games, simple English language activities, snack time, outdoor play, and supporting classroom routines alongside experienced teachers. Working with young children requires flexibility, patience, and imagination. Much of their learning takes place through play, interaction, and repetition, meaning even simple conversations, songs, and games can make a valuable contribution to their confidence and development. Daily transport between the accommodation and your placement is provided by the local team, allowing you to focus fully on your learning experience while becoming part of a supportive international community.
Other Things to Consider in Sri Lanka
Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in the Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging onward transport to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you’re in-country allows for flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination, and they can often be split if you’re travelling with fellow trip participants. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for the return journey to the airport due to safety risks and potential inconvenience.

Project Flexibility - Since the childcare project runs during the morning, you have the option to join teaching projects in the afternoon. A minimum commitment of one week per project is required, and arrangements can be made once you are in Sri Lanka. There are no extra costs, and your additional support across community-based projects is always welcomed.
Resources – At the childcare project in Sri Lanka, resources can be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring materials each day to enhance their productivity and engagement. Preparing well in advance will help you make the most of your experience as a childcare volunteer in Sri Lanka.
Placement Settings – PMGY does not offer volunteer opportunities in orphanages in any location. Studies have shown that volunteering in orphanages can inadvertently support an industry that separates children from their families, putting them at risk of neglect and abuse. As a result, PMGY does not work with or support such institutions. Instead, our programs focus on alternative childcare opportunities where children come to and from the placement daily. Our local teams partner with safe, responsible, and vetted projects that do not provide residential care. These settings allow volunteers to offer meaningful support to local staff while ensuring the safety and well-being of the children.

Accommodation - Shared & Comfort Options Available
Volunteer House
During your time on the Sri Lanka volunteer program, you will stay in our Volunteer House located just outside central Ambalangoda, in a quieter part of town on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The house is around a 10 minute tuk tuk journey from the main town, where you can find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants.
You will share the house with other PMGY volunteers from around the world, creating a friendly and social environment throughout your stay. There is free WiFi and a communal area where volunteers can relax, spend time together or prepare lesson plans if teaching English. A refrigerator is also available for storing items that need to be kept chilled.
Both shared and private room options are available within the Volunteer House. All bedrooms have air conditioning, with bed linen, cupboard space and personal lockers provided. A member of the local team also lives at the house, providing onsite support and security throughout your stay.
Transport to and from your placement is provided by tuk tuk or private car, with placements typically around 5 to 30 minutes from the Volunteer House. This service is included in your Program Fee.

Our Shared Option offers a social way to experience life at the Volunteer House. Bedrooms are separated by gender and accommodate up to 12 volunteers in bunk beds, making it easy to meet other participants and become part of the volunteer community.
Bathrooms are shared with other volunteers, with ample bathroom facilities available throughout the house. These include western style toilets and showers. Shower water is cold, which is common locally and can be particularly refreshing in Sri Lanka’s warm tropical climate.

You will be served three freshly prepared meals daily at the Volunteer House. Sri Lankan cuisine features a lot of rice, with fish or chicken as the main protein options. Vegetarian meals are always available.
The meals blend local and western cuisine, and a weekly menu is provided so you can know in advance what’s on offer. For those craving western comforts, restaurants in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa serve a range of western meals.

PMGY welcomes childcare volunteers in Sri Lanka of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 17, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all volunteers need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Sri Lanka will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.
As a Sri Lanka childcare volunteer, you must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.
In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the childcare projects — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!
Volunteering overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

For your volunteer trip to Sri Lanka, you should book your flights to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) to arrive on the designated Saturday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Sri Lanka childcare volunteer.

Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The program officially ends on the Saturday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

Many of our Sri Lanka childcare volunteers who joined us for just 2 weeks often expressed that their time was too short. They leave wishing they had stayed longer to further engage with the projects they’ve grown passionate about. If your schedule allows, we highly encourage you to consider a longer stay to make the most of this life-changing experience!
While our programs are available for longer durations, volunteers can initially sign up for a maximum of 12 weeks in each destination. In the past, we’ve found that some volunteers commit to extended placements but later wish to adjust their plans for independent travel or to join another program. Please note, however, that Program Fees are non-refundable once committed. If you arrive and find yourself loving the program (as many do!), you are more than welcome to extend your placement. Extensions are subject to availability at the time of your request, but our team will do their best to accommodate your desire to stay longer and continue making an impact.
