As a surf impact volunteer in Portugal, you'll support a unique community initiative that uses surfing as a tool for personal development, confidence building, and social inclusion. Working alongside local instructors and program coordinators, you'll help create a positive and supportive environment where young people can develop new skills, build self-esteem, and connect with others. While qualified surf instructors lead all water-based activities, the additional encouragement and engagement provided by volunteers helps participants gain more from the experience. This surf impact volunteer placement in Portugal offers a rewarding opportunity to combine community involvement with Portugal's vibrant surf culture.

Surf Impact Volunteer Program Highlights

Background to the Surf Impact Program

Portugal is internationally recognised as one of Europe's leading surf destinations, with a long coastline, world-class beaches, and a strong connection to ocean culture. Beyond recreation and sport, surfing has increasingly been used as a tool to support personal growth, emotional wellbeing, and social development among young people.

The Surf Impact Program was developed to help children and teenagers build confidence, resilience, communication skills, and a greater sense of belonging through structured surf-based activities. While the program originally focused on supporting young people facing behavioural challenges, school difficulties, or requiring restorative support, its focus has evolved. Today, participants may include shy or withdrawn young people, those struggling with confidence, children who benefit from social interaction opportunities, and individuals who simply thrive in a supportive outdoor environment.

Many participants are referred by schools, educational professionals, and community organisations who recognise the positive impact that surfing, teamwork, and structured activities can have on a young person's development. Through carefully planned sessions, participants are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, develop responsibility, build friendships, and gain confidence through learning new skills.

The volunteer role within this project is not to replace surf instructors or specialist support staff. Instead, volunteers provide additional encouragement, supervision, and engagement that help participants feel more comfortable and supported throughout the program. Through volunteer work in Portugal, participants contribute to a meaningful initiative that combines outdoor activity, personal development, and community support.

Surf Impact Volunteer Placement Example

Porto Surf Development Program – Volunteers are typically placed within a community-based surf initiative operating along Porto's Atlantic coastline. The program works with children and young people from a variety of backgrounds, using surfing and beach-based activities as tools for confidence building, personal development, and social inclusion.

Sessions take place at local beaches and combine surf instruction with structured support activities, group discussions, and opportunities for personal reflection. Participants work alongside experienced surf instructors and program staff who create a safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment for learning.

The program operates throughout the year, with activities varying depending on weather conditions, participant attendance, school schedules, and seasonal demand. Volunteers support both beach-based activities and the wider program experience, helping participants feel included and engaged throughout each session.

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Work Day

As a surf impact volunteer in Portugal, your role will focus on supporting program staff and participants throughout surf sessions and related activities. Volunteers can expect to assist with a range of responsibilities. For example:

• Welcoming participants and helping them feel comfortable
• Assisting with session preparation and equipment organisation
• Supporting program briefings and check-ins
• Encouraging participation and positive engagement
• Assisting staff during beach-based activities
• Helping supervise participants during program sessions
• Supporting reflection and personal development activities
• Assisting with general program logistics and organisation

The project particularly benefits from volunteers who are positive, approachable, patient, and comfortable working with young people. While local staff and surf instructors lead all specialist activities and water-based instruction, volunteers help create a more supportive and engaging environment for participants throughout the day.

Your work schedule as a volunteer in Portugal will be coordinated between you, the local team, and your project placement. Most volunteers dedicate approximately 3 to 4 hours per day to their project, Monday to Friday, although exact timings are confirmed during your orientation and may vary depending on the project’s needs and staffing requirements at the time. As a result, volunteer shifts may take place in the morning, afternoon, or occasionally the evening. Most placements are located within Porto and can typically be reached by a short walk and a bus journey from the accommodation.

On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to your project, introduce you to the staff, and ensure you are comfortable navigating the route independently for the remainder of your placement.

Other Things to Consider Working With Surf Impact in Portugal

Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you're in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Alternatively, ridesharing apps are a common and cost-effective option. Volunteers may also choose to use Porto's metro network, particularly if they already have a metro ticket or travel pass during their stay. The metro provides a convenient and cost-effective way to travel directly from the city centre to Porto Airport, making it a popular option. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination.

Language & Communication - Portuguese is the primary language spoken by participants and many program staff. While staff members generally have some English ability, communication may sometimes rely on simple language, demonstrations, gestures, and translation apps. No Portuguese language experience is required, but learning a few basic phrases can help you settle in more quickly and build stronger connections with participants and staff.

Understanding Your Impact - One of the most common questions volunteers have is why support is needed when experienced surf instructors and program staff are already leading activities. The answer is that Portugal volunteer programs, such as this, are designed to enhance existing services rather than replace professional expertise. Volunteers provide additional encouragement, interaction, and support that help participants gain more confidence and feel more engaged throughout the program.

Water-Based Activities - While this is a surf-focused project, volunteer responsibilities are generally centred around supporting participants and program delivery rather than providing surf instruction. Qualified instructors remain responsible for all surfing activities, safety procedures, and decisions relating to ocean conditions. Volunteer involvement in water-based activities may vary depending on the session, weather conditions, participant needs, and instructor guidance.

Surfing Requirements & Included Lessons - This placement is best suited to volunteers who have a genuine interest in surfing and feel comfortable spending time in an open water environment. While previous surfing experience is not required, participants should be confident around the ocean and willing to engage with beach-based activities throughout their placement.

As part of the Surf Impact program, volunteers typically receive up to four surf lessons per week, which are included within the Program Fee. All necessary surfing equipment, including a wetsuit and surfboard, is provided by the project and included as part of the placement. Volunteers are welcome to arrange additional surf lessons outside of their project commitments if they wish to further develop their skills. Any extra lessons are arranged independently and paid directly to the local surf school. In short, any private coaching, additional equipment hire, or extra surfing activities outside of the program remain the responsibility of the volunteer.

Participant Diversity - Participants join the program for a variety of reasons and come from different backgrounds. Some may be naturally outgoing, while others may initially be shy, withdrawn, or lacking confidence. The greatest impact often comes from creating a supportive environment where young people feel encouraged to participate, challenge themselves, and build positive relationships with others.

Project Environment - For those interested in volunteer work in Portugal that combines outdoor activity with community development, this project offers a unique opportunity to support personal growth through sport. As a surf impact volunteer in Portugal, you'll gain insight into how surfing can be used as a powerful tool for confidence building, inclusion, and social development while experiencing Porto's renowned coastal culture.

Community-Based Placements - PMGY's surf impact volunteer in Portugal placements focus on supporting ethical, community-based organisations that prioritise participant wellbeing and personal development. These programs are designed to complement existing educational and social support initiatives, creating meaningful opportunities for young people while allowing volunteers to contribute positively and responsibly.

FAQ's

PMGY welcomes surf impact volunteers in Portugal of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all volunteers need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Portugal will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.

As a Portugal surf impact volunteer, you must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.

In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required to join the surf impact projects — just lots of energy, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to preparation!

Volunteering overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

If you have any concerns or queries regarding your eligibility or suitability for the Portugal surf impact program, we recommend that you contact us before committing to the program. Our team is always happy to assist you in making an informed decision and ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all involved.

For your volunteer trip to Portugal, you should book your flights to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport – Porto (airport code OPO) to arrive on the designated Sunday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Portugal surf impact volunteer.

Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.

The program officially ends on the Saturday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

Whether you’re just arriving or bidding farewell to Portugal, our team is here to ensure your transition is as seamless and stress-free as possible. Your time as a Portugal surf impact volunteer will leave you with unforgettable memories, meaningful connections, and a lasting impact on the communities you’ve helped.

You can apply anytime for most of our programs, including the Portugal surf impact volunteer program. However, we highly recommend applying soon to secure your spot. Some of our programs have limited capacity, and spaces can fill quickly, especially during our peak travel period from June to August. If you plan to join us during this time, applying early is even more important to avoid disappointment!

When you embark on this experience, you must be 100% committed to joining the program. To apply, locate the “Apply Now” button on the individual project page. This will guide you step-by-step through our online Application Process. We’ve made it as straightforward and user-friendly as possible so that you can easily secure your place.

Based on feedback from previous Portugal surf impact volunteers, we’ve found that 3-4 weeks is the ideal amount of time to fully immerse yourself in the experience of volunteering in Portugal. This duration provides ample opportunity to integrate into the local community, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to your chosen project. Over this time, you’ll be able to make a lasting positive impact while having plenty of time to explore Portugal’s incredible sights and culture during your weekends.

Many of our Portugal surf impact volunteers who joined us for just 2 weeks often expressed that their time was too short. They leave wishing they had stayed longer to further engage with the projects they’ve grown passionate about. If your schedule allows, we highly encourage you to consider a longer stay to make the most of this life-changing experience!

While our programs are available for longer durations, volunteers can initially sign up for a maximum of 12 weeks in each destination. In the past, we’ve found that some volunteers commit to extended placements but later wish to adjust their plans for independent travel or to join another program. Please note, however, that Program Fees are non-refundable once committed. If you arrive and find yourself loving the program (as many do!), you are more than welcome to extend your placement. Extensions are subject to availability at the time of your request, but our team will do their best to accommodate your desire to stay longer and continue making an impact.

For those considering an even more adventurous journey, we recommend exploring our Encounter Programs. These unique opportunities allow you to experience 2-4 week stays across 3-10 destinations, offering a perfect balance of travel, cultural immersion, and volunteering.

At PMGY, we understand the importance of safety, especially for first-time travellers, and we work diligently to ensure that all our programs, including those in Portugal, provide a secure and enriching experience. Our programs are carefully designed to balance structure and independence perfectly. This means you’ll enjoy a guided and supportive environment while free to explore and immerse yourself in local culture. For further details, please refer to our Safety & Wellbeing page.

Volunteer safety in each destination is a top priority and is monitored regularly. A member of our International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program to ensure it meets our high standards. We also stay current with advice published by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Through constant communication with our local teams, we ensure that our volunteers are always placed in secure and stable regions.

Our International Team has personally visited and participated in every program we offer, paying close attention to every detail—from the living conditions and local neighbourhoods to the food you’ll enjoy. These meticulous checks ensure that all aspects of your stay meet our rigorous standards. Additionally, our local teams are experienced professionals with years of experience hosting international volunteers. They serve as PMGY’s trusted representatives, offering 24/7 support to all volunteers throughout their stay. To further enhance your safety, PMGY provides a 24-hour international emergency line accessible at all times. In-country staff also maintain connections with local medical professionals, ensuring that immediate assistance is available should it be required during your placement as a Portugal surf impact volunteer.

Before you embark on your journey, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, which covers key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have additional or specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. Furthermore, on a monthly basis, PMGY hosts an Introductory Webinar and a Safety Webinar. These interactive sessions offer invaluable information about our projects and practical tips for staying safe abroad.

When you arrive in-country, you’ll participate in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover the general volunteer program and your specific project, including essential safety advice tailored to your destination. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card — a step we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. Additionally, you’ll receive a comprehensive list of essential contact numbers to keep on hand during your stay.

While no travel experience can ever be guaranteed 100% trouble-free, PMGY has taken every precaution to ensure that your time as a Portugal surf impact volunteer is as safe and enjoyable as possible. We strongly suggest following the local team’s guidance and advice to ensure your safety throughout your journey.
