As a horse care volunteer in Portugal, you'll support a local equestrian centre that combines horse care with therapeutic riding programs for children and young people with additional needs. Working alongside experienced instructors, therapists, and animal care staff, you'll help create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for both the horses and program participants. While local staff oversee all specialist therapy and equestrian activities, the additional support provided by volunteers helps the centre deliver meaningful experiences that promote confidence, inclusion, and wellbeing. Volunteer with horses in Portugal for a rewarding opportunity to support both people and animals while experiencing everyday life in Porto.

Horse Care Volunteer Program Highlights

Background to the Horse Care Program

Portugal has a long equestrian tradition, with horses continuing to play an important role in sport, recreation, education, and therapeutic programs throughout the country. In recent years, equine-assisted activities have become increasingly recognised for their ability to support individuals with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, additional support needs, and social or emotional challenges.

Therapeutic riding centres provide a unique environment where participants can build confidence, develop communication skills, improve coordination, and strengthen social connections through structured interactions with horses. These programs rely on experienced instructors, therapists, support staff, and volunteers working together to create a safe and positive experience for everyone involved.

The centres themselves are professionally managed and designed to meet the needs of both horses and participants. The volunteer role is not to replace qualified instructors or therapists. Instead, volunteers provide additional support that helps the centre operate smoothly while allowing participants to benefit from greater individual attention during activities and sessions.

Whether assisting with horse care, preparing facilities, supporting therapy sessions, or helping create a welcoming environment, volunteers play an important role in the daily operation of the program. Through volunteer work in Portugal, participants contribute to projects that support both animal welfare and the development of children and young people within the local community.

Horse Care Volunteer Placement Example

Porto Therapeutic Riding Centre – Volunteers are typically placed within a specialist equestrian centre located on the outskirts of Porto. The project supports children and young people with a range of physical disabilities, learning difficulties, and additional support needs through structured therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities.

The centre provides a safe and supportive environment where participants can develop confidence, communication skills, independence, and physical coordination. Alongside therapy sessions, the horses receive daily care and attention from a dedicated team of instructors and local caretakers.

The project operates throughout the year and includes a variety of facilities such as riding arenas, therapy spaces, stables, paddocks, and outdoor exercise areas. Volunteers work alongside experienced staff to support both horse care activities and participant sessions.

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Work Day

As a horse care volunteer in Portugal, your role will focus on supporting the daily care of the horses while assisting local staff with the smooth operation of the centre. Volunteers can expect to assist with a variety of tasks throughout the day. For example:

• Assisting with feeding and caring for horses
• Preparing stables and facilities for daily activities
• Helping maintain clean and organised horse care areas
• Supporting staff during therapeutic riding sessions
• Assisting participants before and after activities
• Helping prepare equipment and riding areas
• Walking horses where appropriate and under staff guidance
• Supporting seasonal events and centre activities

The project particularly benefits from volunteers who are reliable, patient, proactive, and comfortable around animals. While local staff lead all equestrian and therapeutic activities, volunteers provide valuable support that helps create a positive experience for both the horses and program participants.

Your work schedule as a volunteer in Portugal will be coordinated between you, the local team, and your project placement. Most volunteers dedicate approximately 3 to 4 hours per day to their project, Monday to Friday, although exact timings are confirmed during your orientation and may vary depending on the project’s needs and staffing requirements at the time. As a result, volunteer shifts may take place in the morning, afternoon, or occasionally the evening. Most placements are located within Porto and can typically be reached by a short walk and a metro journey from the accommodation.

On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to your project, introduce you to the staff, and ensure you are comfortable navigating the route independently for the remainder of your placement.

Other Things to Consider Working With Horses in Portugal

Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist in arranging onward transfers to the airport or another destination. Making arrangements once you're in-country allows for greater flexibility, especially as plans can often change, and some participants may share similar flight schedules. Alternatively, ridesharing apps are a common and cost-effective option. Volunteers may also choose to use Porto's metro network, particularly if they already have a metro ticket or travel pass during their stay. The metro provides a convenient and cost-effective way to travel directly from the city centre to Porto Airport, making it a popular option. Costs will vary depending on your chosen method of transport and destination.

Language & Communication - Portuguese is the primary language spoken at the centre. While staff members generally have some English ability, many speak at a basic or conversational level rather than fluently, meaning communication may sometimes rely on simple language, gestures, demonstrations, and translation apps. Participants attending the program may also have varying communication abilities depending on their individual needs. No Portuguese language experience is required, but learning a few basic phrases can help you settle in more quickly and strengthen your interactions with both staff and participants.

Understanding Your Impact - One of the most common questions volunteers have is why support is needed when the centre already has experienced instructors, therapists, and horse care staff. The answer is that Portugal volunteer programs, such as this, are designed to enhance existing services rather than replace professional expertise. Staff remain responsible for all therapeutic and equestrian activities, while volunteers provide additional support that helps create a safer, more engaging, and more personalised experience for participants. The greatest impact often comes through the extra encouragement, interaction, and assistance volunteers can provide during sessions and daily activities.

Previous Horse Work Experience - Unlike many of our other volunteer programs, this placement is intended for volunteers who already have previous experience working with horses. Due to the nature of the role and the welfare of the animals, participants should be confident and comfortable handling horses in a practical setting. While volunteers receive a full orientation upon arrival and are supported by experienced staff throughout their placement, prior horse handling experience is a requirement for joining this program.

Flexibility & Initiative - Activities can vary throughout the year depending on participant attendance, project schedules, therapy programs, seasonal events, and the needs of the horses. Volunteers should arrive with an open mind and be prepared to support a range of different activities throughout their placement. Those who show initiative, enthusiasm, and a willingness to help wherever needed often gain the most from their placement and make the strongest contribution to the project.

Project Environment - This placement offers a unique combination of animal care and community support. Facilities are well maintained and professionally managed, with experienced staff overseeing both horse welfare and participant activities. For those looking to volunteer with horses in Portugal, the project provides a realistic and rewarding opportunity to support therapeutic programs while gaining insight into equine care and the positive impact horses can have on people's lives.

Community-Based Placements - PMGY's horse caretaker volunteer in Portugal placements focus on supporting ethical, community-based organisations that prioritise participant wellbeing and animal welfare. The horses involved in these programs are carefully cared for and play an important role in supporting therapeutic activities. This approach helps create meaningful experiences for participants while ensuring high standards of horse care and welfare are maintained.

FAQ's

PMGY welcomes horse care volunteers in Portugal of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18, with no upper age limit. Additionally, all volunteers need to have good English, although it does not need to be your first language. While it’s not necessary to speak the local dialect, you’ll find that learning a few local words during your time in Portugal will go a long way in building connections and enriching your experience.

As a Portugal horse care volunteer, you must provide a clean criminal background check before volunteering with us abroad. This ensures the safety and well-being of the children and communities we work with. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept anyone with previous criminal convictions.

Volunteering overseas can be a rewarding yet demanding experience. It can be physically and mentally challenging, so all participants must be fit in both areas. If you have any medical or mental health conditions that may affect your participation, these must be disclosed to us during your online application. This ensures we can best support you and assess the program’s suitability.

If you have any concerns or queries regarding your eligibility or suitability for the Portugal horse care program, we recommend that you contact us before committing to the program. Our team is always happy to assist you in making an informed decision and ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all involved.

For your volunteer trip to Portugal, you should book your flights to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport – Porto (airport code OPO) to arrive on the designated Sunday start date. This is the official arrival day for the program, ensuring a smooth and well-organised beginning to your experience as a Portugal horse care volunteer.

Upon your arrival, you will be warmly greeted at the airport by a member of our local team or an appointed driver. They will be easy to spot, holding a sign with your name to ensure you feel welcomed from the moment you land. From there, they will escort you to your accommodation, where you will have the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.

The program officially ends on the Saturday of your final week. This means you will need to vacate the accommodation on this day to make way for new participants arriving for their own life-changing experiences. Our local team will be available to assist with arranging transport to the airport or providing guidance for any onward travel plans you may have.

Whether you’re just arriving or bidding farewell to Portugal, our team is here to ensure your transition is as seamless and stress-free as possible. Your time as a Portugal horse care volunteer will leave you with unforgettable memories, meaningful connections, and a lasting impact on the communities you’ve helped.

You can apply anytime for most of our programs, including the Portugal horse care volunteer program. However, we highly recommend applying soon to secure your spot. Some of our programs have limited capacity, and spaces can fill quickly, especially during our peak travel period from June to August. If you plan to join us during this time, applying early is even more important to avoid disappointment!

When you embark on this experience, you must be 100% committed to joining the program. To apply, locate the “Apply Now” button on the individual project page. This will guide you step-by-step through our online Application Process. We’ve made it as straightforward and user-friendly as possible so that you can easily secure your place.

Based on feedback from previous Portugal horse care volunteers, we’ve found that 3-4 weeks is the ideal amount of time to fully immerse yourself in the experience of volunteering in Portugal. This duration provides ample opportunity to integrate into the local community, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to your chosen project. Over this time, you’ll be able to make a lasting positive impact while having plenty of time to explore Portugal’s incredible sights and culture during your weekends.

Many of our Portugal horse care volunteers who joined us for just 2 weeks often expressed that their time was too short. They leave wishing they had stayed longer to further engage with the projects they’ve grown passionate about. If your schedule allows, we highly encourage you to consider a longer stay to make the most of this life-changing experience!

While our programs are available for longer durations, volunteers can initially sign up for a maximum of 12 weeks in each destination. In the past, we’ve found that some volunteers commit to extended placements but later wish to adjust their plans for independent travel or to join another program. Please note, however, that Program Fees are non-refundable once committed. If you arrive and find yourself loving the program (as many do!), you are more than welcome to extend your placement. Extensions are subject to availability at the time of your request, but our team will do their best to accommodate your desire to stay longer and continue making an impact.

For those considering an even more adventurous journey, we recommend exploring our Encounter Programs. These unique opportunities allow you to experience 2-4 week stays across 3-10 destinations, offering a perfect balance of travel, cultural immersion, and volunteering.

At PMGY, we understand the importance of safety, especially for first-time travellers, and we work diligently to ensure that all our programs, including those in Portugal, provide a secure and enriching experience. Our programs are carefully designed to balance structure and independence perfectly. This means you’ll enjoy a guided and supportive environment while free to explore and immerse yourself in local culture. For further details, please refer to our Safety & Wellbeing page.

Volunteer safety in each destination is a top priority and is monitored regularly. A member of our International Team has thoroughly inspected every PMGY program to ensure it meets our high standards. We also stay current with advice published by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Through constant communication with our local teams, we ensure that our volunteers are always placed in secure and stable regions.

Our International Team has personally visited and participated in every program we offer, paying close attention to every detail—from the living conditions and local neighbourhoods to the food you’ll enjoy. These meticulous checks ensure that all aspects of your stay meet our rigorous standards. Additionally, our local teams are experienced professionals with years of experience hosting international volunteers. They serve as PMGY’s trusted representatives, offering 24/7 support to all volunteers throughout their stay. To further enhance your safety, PMGY provides a 24-hour international emergency line accessible at all times. In-country staff also maintain connections with local medical professionals, ensuring that immediate assistance is available should it be required during your placement as a Portugal horse care volunteer.

Before you embark on your journey, you’ll receive a comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, which covers key topics such as health, safety, visas, and dress codes. If you have additional or specific questions, our dedicated support team is available 24/7 to assist. Furthermore, on a monthly basis, PMGY hosts an Introductory Webinar and a Safety Webinar. These interactive sessions offer invaluable information about our projects and practical tips for staying safe abroad.

When you arrive in-country, you’ll participate in a detailed orientation session. This introduction will cover the general volunteer program and your specific project, including essential safety advice tailored to your destination. During this session, you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a local SIM card — a step we highly recommend to ensure you remain contactable at all times. Additionally, you’ll receive a comprehensive list of essential contact numbers to keep on hand during your stay.

While no travel experience can ever be guaranteed 100% trouble-free, PMGY has taken every precaution to ensure that your time as a Portugal horse care volunteer is as safe and enjoyable as possible. We strongly suggest following the local team’s guidance and advice to ensure your safety throughout your journey.
