Beginning with only 6 destinations across Africa and Asia, PMGY have expanded over the years to increase to 17 destinations across Africa, Asia, South America and Oceania.
Josh from the PMGY International team has travelled on this journey along the way!
Josh has had the unique experience of navigating his way through all 17 PMGY destinations across the globe. Josh has taken in many great spots and unique experiences across each destination whether as a volunteer, coordinator or establishing new PMGY destinations. Great spots in bustling Bangkok, the majestic Maldives and sensational Suva in Fiji to name a few. Unique experiences at the centre of the earth in Ecuador, looking for lemurs in Madagascar, exploring S-21 prison in Cambodia and taking in the culture at Cape Coast Castle in Ghana followed. Sadly, none of the above made it into places and experiences on Josh’s top ten PMGY pick outs (not easy decisions to make!).
Check out the list below for what have been Josh’s highlights across his time exploring all of the destinations PMGY have to offer!
Exploring the low lying valleys of Nepal by air with the high cold mountains of Annapurna in the distance is an experience not to be missed! With PMGY projects based in Pokhara, you could find yourself taking a few hours out of your day to enjoy this great experience!
Venturing a little further out from PMGY base in Rabat; spending your free time at Africa’s second biggest waterfall is not a bad way to enjoy a weekend in Morocco! Stretching around the wide cliffs, the highest fall reaches around 100 metres complemented by several individual waterfalls of varying sizes.
Based 90km out of San José where PMGY is located, a trip to Costa Rica is not complete without a visit to Arenal Volcano. Based in the district of La Fortuna, this active stratovolcano offers impressive views for miles being 1,600 metres high and a crater 140 metres in diameter.
A popular feature on one of the PMGY structured weekend trips, Lion Rock in Sigiriya is a gentle climb that provides a gateway to fantastic panoramic views. Often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World, the rock is 200 metres high and attracts thousands of tourists each year.
Located in northeast Vietnam, Ha Long bay is recognised as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world and is only a few hours drive away from PMGY HQ Hanoi. If you visit Vietnam and don’t take a weekend to explore its emerald waters and towering limestone islands with rainforests aloft then something is seriously going wrong?!
Probably the best place for an exotic and tranquil R&R weekend out of all PMGY destinations! This place really is paradise! Famed for beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters you can spend your time snorkelling for turtles, soaking in the sun or taking your seat on the swings witnessing magical Gili T sunsets. What’s more is that PMGY actually offer a fully inclusive structured weekend trip to Gili T for participants to indulge in all year round!
Although the photo doesn’t do it justice, no trip to Tanzania is complete without an iconic African safari and with it a visit to Ngoronogoro Crater. The conservation area is home to the supreme volcanic crater as well as the famous “Big 5”. The PMGY team can help arrange your weekend safari from Arusha so that you will have every chance of spotting elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos and rhino.
A prominent landmark overlooking the whole city of Cape Town which also happens to be the PMGY base for community projects in South Africa. Cable car or hike to the top, sunrise and sunset panoramic views from this flat-topped mountain are a must on your South Africa experience!
This majestic ivory-white marble monument is certainly the highlight of many peoples trips with PMGY to India and is easily accessible as part of PMGY Golden Triangle Weekend Trips. Built-in Agra in the early 1630s, the architectural beauty and magnificence of the Taj Mahal will struggle to be beaten anywhere in the world. The enormous beauty of the Taj Mahal means this UNESCO world heritage site is easily recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Machu Picchu is recognised at the PMGY Top Pick Out destination to visit (subjective of course and open to debate!). Located 2,400 metres above sea level in the slopes of the Andes, the 15th-century site is recognised as the most famous Inca site globally. The ruins of Machu Picchu continue to reveal the mysteries of the Inca Empire with its beautiful walls, the temple of the sun, royal tomb and sacred plaza. If you fancy reaching it the hard way, the four day Inca Trail awaits you. Otherwise, weekend tours from our PMGY base in Cusco offer a more relaxed alternative.
