10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOLUNTEER IN BALI IN 2019

Happy New Year everyone! If you are looking to make a meaningful impact in 2019 whilst traveling through one of the most beautiful and mystical islands of South-East Asia you might consider going to Bali. This small but wonderful island has so much to offer that it was hard to narrow it down to just 10 reasons but we managed! Below you’ll find 10 reasons why you should consider PMGY Bali as your next volunteer destination in 2019!

1. WIDE RANGE OF PROJECTS

PMGY Bali has a wide range of projects to choose from so there’s always something that will suit you.

You can volunteer at Akasa School and help teach Balinese children English which will ensure they have a bright future ahead of them and get a head start before they go to high-school. You could also volunteer at one of our daycare centres to brighten up these children’s days with games, dancing and basic English teaching while their parents are able to go to work and earn a living for their family. If you fancy working with animals you could also volunteer at our wildlife centre to take care of rescued animals and help their rehabilitation process. Last but not least we also have opportunities for medical and nursing students to see how the Balinese hospital system works and gain insight in a different way of practising medicine.

Smoothie bowls, chicken satay, fried rice and so much more for only a few pounds and all made with fresh ingredients, what more do you want? Bali’s restaurant scene has a lot to offer, from traditional Indonesian dishes, to Western style dishes (they love doughnuts here) and also a lot of vegan and vegetarian options can be found in and around Tabanan.

4. SHOP TILL YOU DROP

Shopaholics eat your heart out in Bali! Bali has so many markets and shopping opportunities that it’s hard not to spend all your savings here. The markets in Bali offer some great deals, from traditional Balinese sarongs, fresh spices, and cute souvenirs to western style clothing, shoes and so much more! And the best thing of it all, it’s very cheap! Expect to haggle at the market to make sure you get the best deal and remember to keep the haggling fun for both the seller and you!

5. GET ZEN

Bali is one of the best places to practice your yoga and meditation skills! There are plenty of yoga and meditation centres in and around Tabanan where the locals are more than happy to teach you a more relaxed way of life. You can join the locals every week for free yoga at the park or go to the meditation centre in Tabanan where the Guru will guide you through a meditation session which even includes some chanting and dancing, a very unique and authentic experience guaranteed!

6. CULTURE IS EVERYTHING

PMGY Bali is located in the traditional region of Tabanan, where there is still a lot of culture to be found. People in Tabanan take religion very seriously and you will see them doing their offerings every single day with a lot of devotion. The local team in Bali people is happy to educate you on the Balinese Hindu religion if you are interested and there might even be a chance to participate in a religious ceremony!

Of course, Bali is also known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. If you’d like to work on your tan, Bali is the place to be! With minimum temperatures never dropping below 20 degrees and an average of 8 sun hours per day Bali is a great place to relax at the beach and take a swim in the bright blue waters after a week of volunteering.

Bali’s many waterfalls should definitely be on your bucket list when coming here! Some more hidden than others, each waterfall offers an unique adventure and they are all Instagram-worthy! There are even specialized waterfall tours which take you to the best waterfalls of Bali in just a day. Some of our previous PMGY volunteers did this tour and they highly recommend this for a free weekend!

9. SURF INTO YOUR WEEKEND

If you’re looking to pick up a new skill, you might take up a surfing lesson or two in your weekends here. Bali is loved by surfers all over the world and board rentals and surf schools can be found all over the island, for just a few pounds you can have yourself a lesson. Bali’s surf scene is one of the most popular and biggest scenes in the entire world, so we not try it here?

10. STUNNING SUNSETS

Some of the most mesmerizing sunsets can be found in Bali. Every night the sky fills itself with so many different shades of orange, pink, red and yellow it’s almost unreal to look at. And the best thing about it all? These sunsets can be seen from the rooftop of our Volunteer House in Tabanan every single night. No need to travel far to be amazed by this natural wonder, just get up the stairs and be amazed!
